Introduction

Look at that cute little puppy! So young and playful but what games are safe and suitable for such a tiny pup? Plenty! In fact, games are very important to a young developing dog to help their mind and body grow. While your little one may not be able to go for a 5 mile run with you, there is so much you can do with your two month old puppy that you may have a hard time choosing what activity to do first!

Activity description

While it may seem like an age old game, it is still one of the best! Teaching a puppy how to play fetch is like giving them a game they can play forever for the rest of their lives. While many puppies will naturally be full of energy and inclined to run, they do not automatically know how to chase, catch and return a ball. They need your help for this! Not only will playing fetch get out a lot of that puppy energy but it will also teach your two month old little one a new skill - a double win!

Step
1
Choose a toy
Find a ball or toy that is suitable for your pup. Make sure it is an easy toy for your dog to grab with their mouth. While your puppy may grow into a tennis ball, they may need a smaller dog toy to begin with when they are only two months old. As long as the toy is soft and can easily be thrown, it will work!
Step
2
Field for running
Head somewhere with your pup where they can really run. Big fields, beaches and dog parks are the best place to go! However, keep in mind your dog's young age and only go somewhere open if you are sure they will return to you when called. If you are wary of this, find an open space that is fenced in.
Step
3
Throw and teach
Show your pup the new toy and let them get a good sniff. Then throw! Your dog will most likely instinctively go after the toy. If not, give them a little encouragement by running after it yourself. Applaud and praise your dog when they get the toy and call their name to teach them to bring it back to you. Take the toy and throw again!

Activity description

Even though your pup may seem young, it is best to start training them right away. A two month old puppy is smarter than you may think! While it is good to start with the basics like sit, lie down and stay, you can really teach your dog anything you'd like as long as you are consistent and involved in the training (you can't expect your pup to magically learn to roll over without your help!). Think about what types of tricks you would like your dog to be able to do any start teaching! Now is the best time to start training that puppy!

Step
1
What to teach
Pick a trick or command that you would like to teach your pup. 'Sit' is always a good place to start, as well as teaching your dog their name. All dogs should be able to respond when called and saying their name is the basis of most commands! Once you have a command or action in mind, you're ready to go!
Step
2
Getting ready
Grab a bunch of dog treats that your pup loves. You will need a good amount of 'rewards' to help your dog learn, especially when it is a brand new skill. Bring your pup to a place where there are little distractions and they will be focused on you and the skill you are teaching them.
Step
3
Teach!
Say the command you are teaching your pup and then help them do the action you are asking for. If you are teaching 'sit', gently push their backside to the ground so that they are in the sitting position. Give your puppy praise, a treat and repeat! Keep doing the same actions and reward system until your puppy is totally trained! If your pup loses focus, take a break and begin again the next day.

Tug of War

Rope Toy or Tug Toy
Activity description

Other than playing fetch, tug of war is also such a classic doggy game that your two month old pup should learn. While some people are skeptical of playing tug, thinking it teaches your puppy bad habits (pulling a toy from a person can be seen as acting dominant), tug can be very fun! It is also a great game to play in the house or in places where your dog may not have a lot of room to run around. All you need is a rope toy and you're ready to go! Hey, you can even play a tugging game while sitting down!

Step
1
The perfect tug
Get a rope toy or other doggy toy that you can easily hold on to. Ropes work well as they will not easily be destroyed when pulled and they are easy for you and your dog to grip. There is a wide variety of tug toys though, so find a good one for your two month old dog's size!
Step
2
Where to tug
Pick a place to play. While it is fun to get your whole body into the game of tug (it can be a great work out for you as well as your dog!), you can easily play sitting down! As long as you can hold on to the toy, your puppy will be happy!
Step
3
Pull
Let your dog take the toy in their mouth and then pull, pull, pull! Most puppies will hold on tight as you try to get the toy away from them. Make sure your dog is wagging their tail the whole time and having fun! Tug should wear your pup out without requiring them to run. Be cautious with their neck (no twisting), and be aware of signs that your puppy is fatigued and ready to stop.

More Fun Ideas...

Scavenger Hunt

Keep your two month old puppy busy by hiding their favorite treats throughout the house. Your dog will get to use their keen sense of smell to find the hidden treasure!

Bubbles

There is nothing cuter than a puppy chasing bubbles! Go outside and blow some bubbles for your dog - watch as they snap at them with their mouth, trying desperately to catch just one!

Conclusion

Finding an activity to do with your two month old pup is actually quite easy. When your dog is so young, every game is new and exciting to them! Puppies also tend to be so full of energy that they will be very excited and ready to fully participate in any activity you may try. So run, fetch, tug and train your new puppy until you are both tired and ready for a pup nap!Â
