Introduction

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a strikingly unusual dog. The breed is known for their blue-black tongue and wrinkled appearance. They are extremely intelligent and a loyal guardian. You might want to stoke the breed's intelligence by teaching your dog a wide variety of commands in addition to obedience training. The Shar-Pei will enjoy joining you on walks around the neighborhood or at the dog park. Surprisingly enough, the Shar-Pei is great at tracking and will enjoy games which allow for the activity. You can do tracking activities indoors or outdoors depending on the weather. Anything that stimulates the mind and the body of the Shar-Pei is a great activity for your pup.

Activity description
The Chinese Shar-Pei has a great sense of smell, like other dogs. The dog's propensity for discussing scented items makes tracking activities a perfect mental and physical stimulation for your pup. Choose an area, perhaps the kitchen or another tiled area, where you can place "hidden" piles of kibble for your pup to find. Try to place the piles in not-so-conspicuous places so that your dog will have to work a little to find them. Not only will your pup enjoy the reward of finding the treats, but your dog will also enjoy the action of hunting down their reward.
Step
1
Treats
The Shar-Pei is a very intelligent dog, so it is best to remove them from the room as you hide the treasure to be sought. Then, call your pup into the room. Say, "find it," and help to guide your dog to the treat treasure. Once the dog understands that they will be looking for items once you say "find it," then you no longer need to do this.
Step
2
Kibble as treasure
Kibble can be used as "treat treasure" to be sought out as well. Place piles of kibble in somewhat difficult to find areas of your kitchen. You can make a "trail" that leads to the crate, and then your pal can take a nap inside. This works especially well if you are going to be away for a bit.
Step
3
Scented toys
A great way to add a twist to this activity is to scent a favorite chew toy and have the dog "hunt" for it. To scent the toy, you should slice open a hot dog and rub the insides all over the toy before hiding it. You might need to guide the dog to the toy the first few times you play this version of hide and go seek.

Obedience Training

Activity description
Obedience training is very beneficial to both you and your Chinese Shar-Pei. In fact, some experts recommend obedience training due to the fact that the Shar-Pei tends to be headstrong. Training should begin when your Shar-Pei is about twelve weeks old. Start with simple commands such as "sit" and "stay," which go hand-in-hand in many ways. You can add more commands as your pup masters each one. Obedience might not require much of your pup in the way of physical activity, but the mental stimulation will also keep them out of mischief due to boredom. In the end, obedience training provides benefits that will last the lifetime of your pup.
Step
1
Start slow
Likely, the easiest command to teach your pup is "sit." Place a treat in your hand. Get your pup's full attention. Have the pup remain in a standing position. Make sure that the dog sees the treat in your hand. Slowly raise your hand, keeping your pal focused on the treat, so that the dog's head rises and the rear end naturally goes into a sitting position. Repeat the word "sit" as you do this.
Step
2
Work on stay
Sit and stay go together in many ways. In fact, once your pup masters "sit," then you may begin to work on "stay." Have your dog get into the "sit" position. Place your palm facing the dog and say "stay." Slowly, back a few steps away and stop. Repeat two more times. Give the pup praise for staying in place.
Step
3
Come and praise
The next command in line is "come." Have your dog sit quietly with their attention on you. Next, go through the stay procedures. Finally, say "come," and whistle or make other motions which will entice your pup to come to you. Reward your pup with praise and a treat.

Activity description
The Chinese Shar-Pei can adapt to almost any activity that you enjoy doing. It might be a good idea to limit this activity to early mornings or late evenings. While the Chinese Shar-Pei is not necessarily considered a brachycephalic dog (meaning their snout reaches down into their throat rather than sticking out like a normal muzzle), the Shar-Pei is sensitive to heat, so be mindful of the time of day that you go out for activity. The Chinese Shar-Pei is likely to join you in any activity that you enjoy; however, keep water handy at all times and monitor the dog for heavy panting.
Step
1
Running fun
Do you enjoy taking a run early in the morning or late in the day? Do you sometimes wish for companionship? The Chinese Shar-Pei will be happy to join you for a run outdoors! Keep in mind that the Shar-Pei is a guardian at heart, so only jog with their leash firmly in hand.
Step
2
Hiking in the canyon
The Shar-Pei is a very strong dog. If you enjoy hiking in an area with canyons or mountainous hiking trails, then take the Shar-Pei along for some great exercise. Again, you will want to keep your dog on a leash. However, you might want a strong, nylon leash that is over six feet long for hiking. Always watch for heavy panting, and be sure to keep bottled water handy.
Step
3
Dog park excursion
Many dog parks are areas that are enclosed. These locations can also offer a walking track inside the dog park. While it is not recommended that the Shar-Pei be let off their leash (they can be aggressive to other dogs), you can still take a walk while exposing your dog to other people and animals. Furthermore, walking will not overexert the Shar-Pei.

More Fun Ideas...

Swimming

The Shar-Pei loves to join you for a swim! Until you are sure that your pup is a good swimmer, however, put the dog in a swim vest.

Cycling

If you decide to take your pup out as you ride a bicycle, then start at an early age so that your dog is accustomed to the activity and does not try to bite the tires.

Conclusion

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a breed unlike others. While they do need a minimum of daily exercise, the breed is actually rather adaptable to their owner's activity level. If you love to hike, bike, or jog long distances, the Shar-Pei can keep up with you! If you prefer to stay indoors and teach the Shar-Pei obedience or play games such as hide and seek, then the Shar-Pei will be quite happy to oblige you in this as well! Make exercise bonding time for you and your pup, and the both of you will be quite happy.
