Introduction

When it comes to rain, Nevada falls about as far from the cloud as you can get. In the average year, it receives less than 10 inches of total rainfall, officially making the Sagebrush State the driest in the country. Because of it, visitors and residents alike won't likely find themselves rained in or rained out many days out of the year, but when they do, there's sure to be ensuing resentment. Instead, we suggest a more active role, such as holding those rainy days as an opportunity to do something different and enjoy the cool, nourishing water for all that it is. Here's our list of rainy day activities that will get you both in and out of one of Nevada's greatest rarities.

Activity description
The biggest problem with rainy days is that it significantly reduces the number of ways and places you and your dog can both get some exercise. It kills the potential for walks, runs, bike rides, and dog parks, unless you don't mind the wet dog smell (if so, teach us, PLEASE), especially since it decreases safety and comfort in the process. But there is an easy solution that works just as well for blazing hot days as it does rainy ones: indoor parks. While there aren't a ton of indoor dog parks strewn across Nevada, there is certainly one that is held in high esteem: The Hydrant Club. It's not particularly cheap for any of their services but they do offer a variety of packages from boarding to training to simply having access to off-leash areas, including an indoor space to escape the weather.
Step
1
Get accepted
No matter what your dog's background, every one of them will have to go through the membership application process, which is nothing to sneeze at. The first step is filling out a form that details what you're looking for and information about your dog's basics like breed and age to their temperament. After you've completed the paperwork, you'll need to send in your dog's health records to make sure they're up to date on proper vaccinations. Then you and they will be scheduled for a membership interview, which is an hour-long process and could entail you leaving them at the facility to have their behavior fully evaluated. If they fail some aspect, it may be suggested that they go through additional conditioning or training before reapplying or simply suggested that they work with one of the trainers before receiving full access to the services and facility (hey, we never said it was easy!). Once they're finally approved, you'll have all the services opened up so you can take advantage of daycare, boarding, training, classes, and access to the off-leash areas.
Step
2
Take advantage
The process isn't easy or cheap but if you do get approved, make sure you take advantage and get your time and money's worth. Weather in Nevada can often be a bit rough, whether it's too hot or on the off-chance it does happen to rain or get nasty out. When it does, you'll have a refuge to go to where you and they can burn off some energy, learn some new commands, and do some socializing in the process.

If you're good with sticking to your personal rewards system (or even if you're not), have your rainy days equal lucky days, days in which you can indulge in whatever you like guilt-free since they're so rare. Rain generally makes people a bit glum, but instead, you can put a smile on your dog's face with a trip to a local barkery. Despite not having the reputation of Portland or Seattle in terms of dog-friendliness, Las Vegas still boasts some great pet boutiques and dog-centric bakeries that will not only have some handmade treats but other products and information as well. That means you'll have a great way to treat yourselves for a cheap cost and spend some time enjoying them while you poke around other dog-friendly stuff.
Step
1
Check it out
Checking out any of the local barkeries takes little more than some basic research. Start by finding out which are closest to you or which seem the most interesting. There are certainly plenty to choose from, but the most popular seem to be Three Dog Bakery, Woof Gang Bakery, and Barking Dogs, and all three seem to offer additional shopping options and services you can take advantage of during your visits or help you plan for a future visit.
Step
2
Pick a spot
Pick a spot or stop by multiple locations and see what each individual place offers, as they seem to have their own strengths. For instance, Three Dog seems to have a fantastic overall selection, while some Woof Gang locations also offer grooming and even vet services. Barking Dog seems to be the most down to earth and is stacked to the ceiling with healthy food options and helpful staff who will help inform you of what might improve your dog's health and wellbeing, on top of their additional services. With the rain, you'll have more than enough time to check out everything they have to offer and stay dry and have something to do in the process!

Covered Patio Tour

Activity description
Just because it's raining outside doesn't mean that it's cold or particularly miserable. It just means that it's wet. But that doesn't mean you can't still get around without getting soaked. Plenty of restaurants and bars in Las Vegas have nice patio seating complete with coverings overhead to help patrons escape both the blazing sun and the occasional rain, which is something you and your dog should certainly take advantage of. Many also offer a few tailored dog treats and easy access water bowls so your dog is just as well cared for as you are. Make a trip out of it and try out some new places while you take mini walks in between.
Step
1
Plan it
No one wants to get stuck in the rain for too long, so if you're going to set up your mini food and drink tour, it's best that you plan ahead so you're well prepared. Unless you plan on hopping back into your car after every stop, try to plan ahead so you can just pop an umbrella and walk in between locations for a tour that gets your dog exercise in between tasty treats. There are plenty of places to choose from, but the highest recommendations come from Egg & I (along with Egg Works) as their staff loves dogs and always has treats handy, Krayvings, because of their extensive patio cover, and our favorite pick, Lazy Dog, which actually has chef-made healthy dog meals for your pooch's pleasure.
Step
2
Visits aplenty
See if you can find a string of them within walking distance or multiple places to visit where your dog can try food prepared specifically for them to see where their tastes reside (chances are they'll really just be happy to get something that isn't good food). Once you've checked the weather and defined your stops, you just need to hit the ground walking!

More Fun Ideas...

Hotel for Dogs

Surprisingly enough, even some of the most regal hotels in Las Vegas have dog-friendly accommodations. Some will even go so far as to offer custom beds, bowls, toys, and clean-up services, so if you're planning a vacation, even if it's just for a day or two, make sure to see which ones offer the best doggy amenities.

Get Artsy

Since most art galleries don't serve food, it's easy enough to make them accessible for dogs. Very few will out of principle alone, but places like Jana's Red Room in the Art Factory is dog-friendly and will allow them to come in and check out the newest pieces with you.

Go Pro

For the outdoorsy types, rain can be especially damping on the spirits, so use your indoor time to your advantage by taking your dog with you to Bass Pro Shops in Las Vegas. They're dog-friendly and have a massive selection of products for both you and your pooch to choose from for your next outdoor adventure.

Conclusion

While the rain, rain usually goes away after a few hours in Nevada (or at worst, a day), that doesn't mean you're restricted to working or spending your time around it. Hopefully, now that you have our list to work off of, you'll be inspired to take our advice or generate some ideas of your own so the rain isn't such a pain!
