Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest dog of them all? It’s about time your pup and you looked in a mirror! Did you know that you actually trigger a “cuddle chemical” (or oxytocin) when you look your dog directly in their eyes? That’s right. Those twinkling pupils and all that tail wagging are results of you taking the time to acknowledge the presence of your pet and make them feel special. We hope you’ll think about this activity as a fun way to laugh and bond with your beloved pooch. If they’ve never met their reflection before, this could certainly be hilarious!

Pick your mirror
This works best with a large mirror like the ones on the backs of doors or the stand-alone types in bedrooms. You might even use the one in your bathroom. If you must, you can huddle close and use a smaller handheld mirror. The point is, you and your dog can see each other in the mirror.

Let the fun begin
If your pup has never witnessed their reflection before, you’ll have to let them warm up to the idea of another dog suddenly in the room. Look at each other, make motions, and make faces at one another. Don’t forget to make eye contact with your pooch in the mirror.

Play mirror games
One of my favorite games to play with my fur baby is called “Freeze and Sneeze.” We play it whenever we’re in front of the mirror, and I’ll grow very still. I’ll look at her in the mirror, and she’ll look back, waiting for the sneeze (albeit, a fake one) she knows is coming. It’s a great little activity of anticipation and excitement. She goes crazy when I finally sneeze and move around!

Have you ever been caught having a full-on conversation with your doggo? I’m imagining that you’re nodding emphatically at this very moment. It’s really the perfect way to clear your mind and get some things off of your chest, and your pup is all too willing to listen most of the time. They stare up at you with those sweet eyes, tilting their head at some of the phrases you speak. It’s almost like they understand exactly what you’re saying, and sometimes a listening ear is all you need. You don’t need advice or pity; you just need your furry pal.

If you don’t want others watching you speak to your pup or to overhear your troubles, find a secluded area at the park or stretch out across your bed with your doggo. Just make sure to be comfortable. This is great for those rainy days when your pup may be bored. Share some eye contact and secrets!

Talk to your friend
Unleash all of your burdens. Your dog will listen and probably even offer to play with you or to give you sweet puppy kisses. It’s so great to get some things out in the open, and your pet can be that shoulder to cry on. You can lean on them in times of hardship. Also, this doesn’t have to be a sad or anxious conversation. You can totally have a fun, lively talk with your buddy.

20 Questions
Our voices tend to rise in pitch at the end of questions, and dogs, a lot of times, love this inflection. They tilt their adorable heads as if to say, “Can you repeat that?” or “Why do you ask?” Spend some time asking your baby some questions. They can be random and senseless. Your fur child is simply happy to be looking back at you and listening to your inquiries. I love to ask my Yorkie, “How did you come to be so cute?” She loves that question. If you have kids, invite them to think of questions to ask your dog.

My dog loves this game because she’s got my full attention. We’re running through the house at least once a day, and she’s having the time of her life. How do I know? She keeps coming back for more and more. You may not think that your baby will like the element of surprise, but give this a whirl. You might find that they enjoy the fact that you’re as excited about an activity as they are. So get ready to run for your life and even get down on the ground if you’re able. However big or small your dog, they’ll enjoy the physical play with their favorite human.

As your pup finishes their meal, this is the perfect time to seek out a great hiding spot. Remain very still and don’t make a sound. They’ll return to your normal space and won’t find you there. As soon as you make an appearance, they’ll understand that the game is on!

Surprise and chase
More than likely, your good boy or girl will take off down the hallway. They might even head to their secret hiding place or safe spot. If they don’t immediately, though, you might chase them there. Be sure to look at them and smile and talk sweetly to them so that they know this is all about fun.

Your doggo is a smart one. So, when they return looking for you again, they’ll go back to your original hiding spot. You’ve got to change things up. Surprise them in a different place and chase them again. You can play this outdoors or inside on a rainy day or during the evenings. There actually seems to be more places to hide when you’re indoors.
