The success of this outing with your pup will largely depend on their temperament. That’s right. Dogs have personalities, their own likes and dislikes. One pup might love sliding on the ice while another absolutely hates it. The only way to find out how your doggo feels about the rink is to take them for a skate. If it’s an outdoor rink, which it likely will be if dogs are invited, be sure to bundle up. You might even put a doggie coat or scarf on your little buddy. Just make sure they can move and have fun with you!

Head to the rink
You’ll need to pack your skates and gear. Don’t forget to pack anything your pooch might need while skating as well. Now, they won’t need skates themselves. They can slip and slide on their paws. This will be a great test of balance more than likely. And you’ll be able to tell if they like it or not.

Take it slow
Let them get the hang of this whole skating thing before you take off skating. Their instinct will push them to skate along with you, and they might not be ready initially, even if they’ve skated with you before. You’ll know if they like it. That tail will be wagging, and they’ll be trying to keep up with you.

Enjoy yourselves
Be safe, and have a good time. Make friends, and if you see another dog owner around, go over and chat. Your pooch might make a new friend, and you might, too. Take breaks every now and then. Organize a dog-friendly skate-a-thon at your local ice rink, and give the funds raised to a local animal shelter. Even if the rink won’t go for “dog-friendly,” you could still use your dog’s face as the face of the event. That’ll get some attention in the area. You could maybe even raise money for a specific beloved pooch in the area that needs an operation or some other medical aid. Whatever the cause, make it a good one. These are great to host around the holidays when people are in the mood for twinkling lights, cold ice, and hot cocoa.

Plan the event
Something you’ll want to do is create a pledge sheet for participants. Call and reserve a rink, and if dogs can attend, that’s even better! Choose a charity to give to, and we recommend something animal-related because folks love to help needy pets and shelter babes.

Spread the word
Think about throwing this during late November or early December so that schedules aren’t too busy yet. People are certainly out and about shopping, so they’ll be in the mood for a little holiday fun, of course. It’s also a charitable time of year, so you might raise more funds for the animals you’re helping!

Change things up a bit and go rollerskating instead. Your dog can run alongside you as you skate. Sometimes, a different terrain will give you new perspective on your passion for ice skating. And, of course, it’s great exercise for both you and your kindred spirit. And if it’s warmer and those outdoor, dog-friendly ice rinks aren’t open to you, this can be the pawfect way to keep with skating and let your doggo tag along. And who knows? You might be able to keep up with your fur child better when you’re on wheels. They move pretty quickly when they get outside on the sidewalks, right?

Choose a safe location
Since you’re on wheels and you have your pup with you for this activity, choose a location free from traffic. If you can skate in a park while your dog runs beside you, that would be ideal. Paved trails in a state park or beside a lake are wonderful, too. Just be sure that both you and your pet will be safe, should you accidentally fall while skating.

Take breaks to play
Every now and again, stop to take a break. Drink some water and relax on a bench or in the grass. Your pup needs some rest, and you do, too! Also, it’s just fun to play. Take a frisbee along, or just find a stick in the park and play fetch. Smile, laugh, and get ready to see your pooch having the time of their lives.

They’ll love spending time with you, and they’ll marvel at your slow-mo, interesting moves. It’ll be fun to see how they respond. They might lie down beside you and mimic your actions. Who knows?
