The Pointer is a large dog and very noble. This breed of dog, also called the English Pointer, was bred to hunt quail and other birds. The Pointer is the ultimate example of a gun dog that is extremely hard-working and loyal. They have great speed, agility, a high hunting drive, the instinct to point, and are undeniably graceful and stunning. This breed can come in several different colors, and all of them are beautiful. You may see a liver and white, black and white, brown and white, or even a lemon-colored dog. Pointers can also be a solid color. Many gun dog enthusiasts believe that one cannot own a Pointer and not use them for what they were bred for; it is thought that this is doing the dog a great disservice. However, there are many who own Pointers and do not hunt with them. Pointers make great family dogs and loving companions; although, they do need their exercise to stay healthy and happy.

Taking your Pointer into some shallow water, such as a shallow section of a river, and having them retrieve objects can be a fulfilling activity. If you do not hunt with your dog, rather than using pigeons or other birds to practice, you can use a scented toy. Family companion dogs that enjoy retrieving may also like a Frisbee or ball. If you do use your Pointer for hunting, then, yes, there are birds you can get from a hunting or outdoor store. If you have a Pointer and do not hunt with them or only hunt occasionally, it is important to keep your dog very active with exercises that provide mental and physical stimulation. Perhaps you live close to a river that is shallow in places, or maybe you have a shallow pool. Either way, let your dog get used to the water with you.
