Introduction

With a bark that is larger than their size, the Toy Fox Terrier is an active, adorable dog that doesn't even know how small they are. They are larger than life with a feisty but loving nature. They are easy to train and can be taught many tricks as they are so willing to learn and highly intelligent. Don't pamper this little pooch, they like to earn their keep. They will love a job to do, even if it is just fetching your slippers each night. They can be taught to roll over and over, ride a pony, or even do circus tricks. In fact, in the past, they performed acrobatics, walked tightropes, and demonstrated other tricks much to the delight of many an audience. So how do you keep them out of trouble and in your good books? You keep them busy as a bee, that's what you do.

Treadmill
Activity description
The day outside is bleak, the rain is bucketing down and for the third time this week, you are going to have to miss taking your Toy Fox Terrier for their walk. You know what that means - an energetic puppy on your hands. But if you have a treadmill, then your problems are solved. Teach your dog how to walk on the machine; go slowly at first. Walk on it with them until they get their confidence. Keep the pace slow and easy at first, before increasing the pace. With this activity, your dog will always be able to have a walk each day. Make it a training time. Walk for five minutes then stop. Treat. And go again. Once they have the confidence you can increase the pace but never more than they can handle. And stay and supervise just in case. Better still, take turns on the treadmill and you will both benefit.
Step
1
Dust off the treadmill
It's time to really use the treadmill the way it should be used. Turn it on and start getting your dog used to the machine. Step on it yourself going at the slowest pace ever and encourage your dog to join you. They may just jump on and right off again. That's fine, give them time to adjust to this new thing. Then, place them on the machine and sit at their side talking to them. Just go slow. It will be a new experience for them and they will take time to get used to the movement under their feet.
Step
2
Adjust the speed dial
When they are fully confident on the machine, then you can turn the machine up just a little bit. Slowly, day by day, increase the time and the angle of the machine so your dog gets a good workout. Let them get off when they want to. Don't force them or they may come to fear the machine. Treat rewards really help motivate your dog so praise them for a job well done and give them a treat, and they will want to keep going.

Motivation
You may find that you get motivated to use the treadmill yourself. Before long your dog will be racing you to see who gets the first go. The trick with a dog is to make a task fun. If it is fun, they will learn quickly and will want to keep doing the activity. The treadmill can help out on cold, wet winter days when it is impossible to go outside. It will keep you and your canine fit and sane on a wet day.

Activity description
Walking is always the best exercise you can give your dog. It provides the excuse to get out of the house and see some new sights. If it is wet, who cares? Unless it is torrential rain, a little water can be endured. Walking on a raining day is quite different from walking on a sunny day. The day seems quieter, more muted somehow. Your sassy Toy Fox Terrier won't care if it's a bit wet, or cold, or hot, or warm. They just want to get out and explore. Don't let the weather put you off. Add variety to your walks so it remains an interesting past time. This activity is good training and socializing for your dog. It is also good exercise and a chance for your dog to explore the neighborhood. And it is free!
Step
1
Regardless of the weather
Walking can be done in most weather unless it is a blizzard or a hurricane! But a little rain, light snow, or wind all offer a different perspective on the day. Getting out the door is the hard part - well, for you but not for your dog. They can't wait to go anywhere, they don't care. Even a stroll to put out the garbage is like a lotto win to your dog. If it is raining, add a coat or an umbrella - even a coat for your Toy Fox Terrier! They will be so busy they probably won't notice rough or windy weather.
Step
2
Add variety
You don't just have to walk, you can jog a little, walk a little, change direction, even go backward, unless you feel a bit weird about it. This change in tactics will keep your dog focused on what you are doing. They will try to guess your next move. You can walk, then freeze - don't move at all. Then move again. Try walking a different route, go to a different park or to a friend's place. Don't just walk around the same old block - try the next block! Get adventurous.
Step
3
Get out and live
Walking frees up the mind and you will be surprised at how relaxed you are after a walk. Your dog loves exploring, so it is a perfect outing for them. You can train them as you go. Get them to sit and stay, to walk, run, then sprint. Or after all that, you could stop at the cafe and order a refreshing or warming drink. A few treats for a well behaved pup and the outing is complete. You can go home now and feel guilt free for the day.

Making the Bed

bed and fresh linen
ball and a basket
Activity description
Changing a bed can be made into a fun activity for your dog. As you take the pillowcases and the sheets off, give them to your dog to put in the laundry basket. The sheets will be a challenge and keep them busy. You can bury them in the bed and let them burrow their way out to play growl at you and then ask you to do it again. They will get to know that changing a bed is a fun task. Play fight with the pillows, but don't get too rough! To get them off the bed while you put new linen on, you can toss the ball under the bed, in the closet or wherever you can and your dog will race after it. Make sure your dog knows when the game is over though, or you will be remaking the bed.
Step
1
Gather supplies
Get set up to change the bed. Grab fresh linen, and grab a basket and get your dog to drag the basket to the bedroom. Then start the change with a game; throw the blankets over your pup and watch them explode out of the bedding. This game could go on forever, but you have a bed to make!. After a bit of playtime, start stripping the bed and get your dog to take the old linen and put it in the basket. You may be surprised how helpful your pup is. They may struggle with the sheets so give them a hand and finish the chore with a treat.
Step
2
Time for the ball
As you start to redo the bed in fresh linen, it is time to bring out the ball and toss it under the bed for your dog. That will keep them entertained although they will want you to re-toss it again and again.... and again. Try throwing it down the hall as you straighten the sheets. Then toss it into the closet while you straighten the cover. By that time your dog will be back again with the ball. Take the ball and get your dog to help you drag the basket to the laundry.
Step
3
Wash, then hang
You can teach your dog to help you put the linen into a front loader washing machine. Now, it's time for more ball play until the load is done, and then you can carry it all out to the clothesline. This is where you can give your dog a basket full of pegs and teach them to give you a peg when you need it. If they can do all this, they will be one tired dog and they will have earned a treat. Your Toy Fox Terrier is a dog who loves to help, so let them.

Doing the Dog Crawl

Teach your dog to crawl by getting down to their level and getting them to lie down. Then hold a treat just out of range of their mouth. If they raise up, take the treat away and repeat the order to lie down. Let them sneak forward on their tummy to get the treat. Before long they will be crawling along like a professional. This is a cool trick to teach them and you can develop it further by adding in a rollover command. Your Toy Fox Terrier is a quick learner, so research a host of tricks to teach them.

Balance a Treat on Their Nose

This trick takes a bit of learning as your dog will just want to eat the treat. But teach them to sit, and then gently put a treat on their nose, and say stay. If they try to grab the treat, say no. Take the treat and try again. They don't get the treat until you say so. At first, keep the timing short. Put the treat on the nose, count to three, and then say well done or good dog! They get the treat. Then extend the time. It is good for your dog's focus and obedience.

Shake Hands

Start by sitting with your dog, saying 'shake hands'. At the same time, reach down and take hold of their paw. Do this a couple of times and then give them a treat for doing it. Then, try the command to shake hands again and see if they raise their paw. If they do, give them a lot of praise and a reward. Before you know it, your little dynamic pup will be going around shaking everyone's hand. Start slowly, and allow them time to learn. Patience is important when teaching a dog.

Conclusion

From fetching things for you, being a walking companion, and being a couch potato just chilling out with you and the family, the Toy Fox Terrier has a real personality that will entertain you throughout the day. This pup can be taught to balance on your back on their hind legs, or maybe load the washing machine with their own toys. How about teaching your dog to balance a treat on the end of their nose while sitting on their haunches? All these things are easy for your little Toy Fox Terrier. They love to entertain and enjoy all the attention. So make your dog work for their treats. Make them feel useful and they will love it. Teach them to pick up their toys and put them away. Teach them to push closed any open cupboard doors. But above all, have fun with your Toy Fox Terrier.
