American Eagle Dog Breed History

The word American in the name of this breed comes from its parent breed name, the American Eskimo Dog; it does not refer to where it originated from. With limited information available about the new hybrid we must assume it has the best features of both parent breeds. The American Eskimo dog is a member of the Spitz family, which are Nordic dogs with fox-like faces and profuse coats. The true origin of the American Eskimo dog is unknown except for the fact that small white Spitz type dogs were commonly found in German immigrant communities and became known as the American Spitz dogs. They became a popular entertainer in many circuses travelling throughout America in the 19th Century. In 1917, they were renamed the American Eskimo dog, although no one seems to know why. They have winning looks and personality, they are clever, and active. In the 1500s the Beagle was first noted in the history books. They were popular dogs for the English hunters who would take packs of these dogs out tracking down rabbits, hare, pheasant, and other small animals. It is thought that they originated from a cross between a Harrier and other English hounds. The Beagle has an excellent nose for tracking and has been used in modern times as a narcotics detection dog. They make great family pets and are very popular companion dogs. The new hybrid gives a new take on the coloration and texture of the amazing coat from the American Eskimo dog, although the coat is not as dense, making it easier for the dog in hotter climates. The American Eagle Dog has a friendly outgoing personality, is eager to please, loves activity and games, and likes to be with its human family.

American Eagle Dog Breed Appearance

Depending on whether your American Eagle Dog is male or female, the weight will range between 20 and 50 pounds, making this hybrid a small to medium sized canine. The fur is typically thick, dense and straight, requiring consistent brushing, and can vary in color, including cream, white with cream, black, and white with brown. There can be a mane-like look around the neck, although this distinct feature is most often seen in the males of the breed. The ears are often floppy, and the eyelids, nose, and footpads are most often black in color.

American Eagle Dog Breed Maintenance

The American Eagle Dog has a beautiful dense coat and is classified as an average shedder. The coat is easy to groom and your dog should be brushed daily to keep it at its best. There will be hair around the home so you need to decide if you are happy to be forever vacuuming. A bath is only necessary when your dog really needs it, for example, when she has rolled in something smelly or has covered herself in mud. Once a week you need to check the ears to ensure that there is no inflammation present, and give them a gentle wipe with a damp cloth. Don’t push anything into the inner ear in case you cause injury. Like you, your dog needs to keep her teeth clean and a brushing three times a week should be fine. It is advisable to train your dog when they are a puppy to get used to you checking the ears, teeth, and the eyes as it will help later on when she is matured. These dogs do enjoy their food and anyone else’s if they can persuade them to hand it over, so watch for weight gain.

American Eagle Dog Temperament

This designer or hybrid dog is very intelligent, affectionate and loving, making the breed an excellent family dog or companion. They are extroverts who can be trained easily if they have a firm but not harsh leader, and like consistency in all things. The American Eagle Dog is energetic and playful, and loves to join in family games. They enjoy being with their family and don’t like being left alone for extended periods of time. If left alone in a small yard the dog can be quite destructive with nothing to do but to get into mischief. The American Eagle Dog combines the best characteristics from her parent breeds, the Beagle and the American Eskimo dog. The Beagle was bred for hunting and loves to follow her nose, while the American Eskimo dog was often used as an entertainer in circuses performing tricks. Both breeds are attractive and intelligent. By forming a hybrid breed from the two, a dog was produced who was sociable, easy to train and excellent with children. However, they are known for chewing and digging unless they are kept busy and trained how to behave. They adapt well to apartment living if they get plenty of exercise, although they can be barkers. These dogs learn and adapt very quickly to patient training.

American Eagle Dog Activity Requirements

The American Eagle Dog loves activity, whether it is training, walking, swimming or just games with the family. They will be the first in line to join you in whatever you are doing. They are easy to train and learn fast if you give a lot of praise, treats and rewards to keep them interested. Children and your American Eagle will get on well if the children are taught how to play safely with dogs and how to treat them right. If your dog is socialised from an early age, they will be loyal and loving companions. Because this breed is very active and inquisitive, a well fenced yard is important to keep them from wandering away. They should not be trusted with smaller pets as they tend to see them as prey and chase them. Because they are a smaller dog, they can adjust to apartment living if they get their walks during the day. But true to their Beagle history, they can be barkers unless trained otherwise, which may make apartment living tricky.
