The American Leopard Hound sounds intimidating, however, when he is home with the family he is a lovable and easy-going hound. When he is on the hunt, he is tenacious and brave. He has been used to hunt feral hogs, large livestock and even bear. He is able to hunt various types of prey and then hold the prey by using eye contact and body language until the hunter shows up. At home, he also uses eye contact and body language to convey his wishes so his family knows what he needs or wants. The American Leopard Hound is easy to train.

American Leopard Hound Breed History

The American Leopard Hound is thought to have descended from hounds brought into Mexico by Spanish conquistadors after Christopher Columbus discovered the new world. These hounds were then crossed with Mexican dogs. Early settlers brought these dogs, simply called Leopard Dog, from Mexico into the United States to hunt wild boar and bear. His exact origins are unclear and the dogs that were used to develop the breed are of unknown origins. There is no actual documentation regarding the American Leopard Hound’s heritage. It is thought that the American Leopard Hound is one of the oldest breeds in the Americas used for treeing. In 1960, this breed brought in from Mexico had an official breed club formed and he was given the name American Leopard Cur. It was not until 2008 that members of the American Leopard Cur Club decided to vote to change his name to American Leopard Hound. This breed club began closely documenting the dogs being registered with them as American Leopard Hounds. They have also researched the importance of the breed within American history. He was used on early farms to keep a watch over the livestock including chickens, cows and pigs. It was his main job to keep track of any escaped livestock and bring them back home. Later, he was used to hunt game such as feral pigs and bear. The Leopard Cur was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1998. In 2008, the breed’s name was changed from Leopard Cur to American Leopard Hound and the American Kennel Club accepted the American Leopard Hound into its Foundation Stock Service in 2012, starting his journey toward becoming fully recognized by the AKC.

American Leopard Hound Breed Appearance

The American Leopard Hound was developed not for looks, but for ability. That being said, the American Leopard Hound can vary significantly in looks. He does have one very specific defining characteristic; he has a splotched coat called merling. He can be found in a variety of colors including red, blue, brindle, black, yellow and grey. His coat is short and dense. He is a medium-sized dog with a powerful build. His long legs are very strong, especially his hindquarters which allows him to easily climb trees. His feet are exceptionally tough and do not usually get sore when he is on the hunt. The nose of a American Leopard Hound is dark, usually black in color. Although a red merle American Leopard Hound can have a brown nose. He has round eyes that are set wide and can be any shade of brown or yellow, some may have blue eyes.

American Leopard Hound Breed Maintenance

The American Leopard Hound has a dense double coat that will shed seasonally. Since his coat is short, when he sheds the hairs tend to float through the air and land on the furniture and clothes. It is best to wipe down his coat using a soft, damp cloth or brush him using a natural bristle brush or a soft slicker brush once a week. Since he has ears that hang, be sure to check for dirt or moisture weekly and clean as needed to ensure infections do not set in. A routine dental plan should be put in place to ensure his teeth and gums remain healthy. Check his toenails every few weeks and trim as needed. The American Leopard Hound is not a hypoallergenic breed and he does have somewhat of a doggy smell. Baths should be done every few months or when he gets really dirty from hunting or working in the fields.

American Leopard Hound Temperament

The American Leopard Hound is a goofy, lovable hound that loves his family. He will form a very strong bond with his family and do almost anything to please them. He is protective of his family, especially children and will guard them from strangers. Playing games or just going for long walks will give him enough exercise to keep him healthy. Since he is a hound, he can vocalize very well and if left alone outside for long will make your neighbors upset with his baying and barking. He will get along well with other dogs and if his family is not home during the day, it might be beneficial for him to have a doggy playmate. With other pets in the home, he should be closely monitored and corrected when he exhibits unwanted behaviors. Training is relatively easy since he is intelligent and eager to please. Since he does have such a high prey drive, make sure you have a secure fence to keep him from terrorizing neighborhood pets.

My American Leopard Hound is named Memphis. He is a beautiful blue Merle (with a little liver Merle on the tops of his ears). He is very energetic and out going but also very protective over the household. He gets along well with my Maltipoo but I do have to occasionally correct his prey drive. His bawling (or howl) is unmistakable and powerful. Overall, this is an AMAZING breed.
