American Leopard Hound

The American Leopard Hound is thought to have descended from hounds brought into Mexico by Spanish conquistadors after Christopher Columbus discovered the new world. These hounds were then crossed with Mexican dogs. Early settlers brought these dogs, simply called Leopard Dog, from Mexico into the United States to hunt wild boar and bear. His exact origins are unclear and the dogs that were used to develop the breed are of unknown origins. There is no actual documentation regarding the American Leopard Hound’s heritage. It is thought that the American Leopard Hound is one of the oldest breeds in the Americas used for treeing. In 1960, this breed brought in from Mexico had an official breed club formed and he was given the name American Leopard Cur. It was not until 2008 that members of the American Leopard Cur Club decided to vote to change his name to American Leopard Hound. This breed club began closely documenting the dogs being registered with them as American Leopard Hounds. They have also researched the importance of the breed within American history. He was used on early farms to keep a watch over the livestock including chickens, cows and pigs. It was his main job to keep track of any escaped livestock and bring them back home. Later, he was used to hunt game such as feral pigs and bear. The Leopard Cur was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1998. In 2008, the breed’s name was changed from Leopard Cur to American Leopard Hound and the American Kennel Club accepted the American Leopard Hound into its Foundation Stock Service in 2012, starting his journey toward becoming fully recognized by the AKC.
