American Pit Bull Terrier

30-60 lbs
17-22"
United States of America
Yankee Terrier, Pit Bull, Pitty, Pit

The term Pit Bull or Pit Bull Terrier can refer to any number of stocky, short-haired dogs with a mixed heritage of Bulldog and Terrier. The American Pit Bull Terrier, on the other hand, is listed as a specific breed by the United Kennel Club, although not recognized by the American Kennel Club or the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.

A well-bred American Pit Bull Terrier can make a loyal and loving companion for the right pet parent. Responsible breeders focus on developing a more docile temperament, so these dogs have plenty of love and affection to share with their people. However, their muscular build and tragic origins mean that obedience training and socialization are essential to raise a well-behaved dog.

Keep reading to find out about the history, maintenance, and care requirements of the American Pit Bull Terrier to help you decide if this is the right breed for you.

American Pit Bull Terrier Breed History

The American Pit Bull Terrier, like other similar breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier, can trace its lineage back to the 1700s in England. Farmers sought a quicker-thinking, more agile dog than the Bulldog, so they crossed the Bulldog of the 1800s with several different breeds of terrier that were somewhat more aggressive and independently minded.

The results of these crossbreedings were extremely well-muscled dogs that were both agile and strong. These traits also made these dogs excellent candidates for the blood sports that developed in the late 1700s and early 1800s in England, such as bear baiting, bull baiting, and eventually dog fighting. It is from these dog fighting rings, known as pits, that the breed gets its name.

In the early 1800s, dog fighting also became popular in the United States, and dog fighting enthusiasts began importing these dogs into the country to fight. American breeders focused on developing larger and heavier canines. These dogs eventually became known as American Pit Bull Terriers in the United Kingdom and were also recognized as such by the United Kennel Club in 1898.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) sought to distance itself from the “sport” of dog fighting, however, and refused to recognize the breed. But in 1936, the AKC created a stricter standard, particularly in regards to the color and size of the dogs, then recognized them under the less-threatening name of the American Staffordshire Terrier. These two breeds have been developing separately for many decades.

American Pit Bull Terrier Breed Appearance

American Pit Bull Terriers are compact, medium-sized dogs with very muscular builds, particularly around the shoulder and neck areas. Their Bulldog heritage can be seen in their large, blocky heads, but while their muzzle is wide, deep, and very strong, it is much longer than the pushed-in snout that is commonly seen on the modern English Bulldog.

Their eyes are most often almond-shaped, and, unlike the American Staffordshire Terrier, any color is permissible, including blue and parti-colored eyes. Their natural ears are held in either a rose or half-prick configuration and are generally fairly short, although ears that are cropped will typically be held erect. The process of cropping ears is now illegal in many countries and is losing favor with breeders and dog fanciers in the United States as well — cropping is also regulated in some US states.

The Pitty can come in any color, although most breeders avoid breeding merle-colored dogs as blindness and deafness are sometimes associated with this type of coloration.

American Pit Bull Terrier Breed Maintenance

When it comes to grooming, Pitties are relatively low maintenance. Unless your Pitty is exceptionally good at getting messy, they should only require a few baths per year. Keep your pup's coat healthy and shiny with short, weekly brushing sessions with a slicker brush or grooming glove.

While you won't need to bathe or brush them very often, Pitties are prone to skin-related problems, which may require the use of medicated baths or ointments. Skin disorders can be expensive to treat — pet insurance can help protect your Pitty from high vet costs. Our pet insurance comparison tool lets you compare plans from leading providers in one convenient place. Fetch your quote today!

American Pit Bull Terrier Temperament

When the blood sports of the 1800s were outlawed here in the United States, responsible breeders of these dogs began to focus on a more docile and calm temperament, and this focus was continued even after the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier were split into two groups.

As a result, most of these dogs mature into loyal, affectionate, and gentle companions who are known for their patience with children. While these dogs are typically very gentle with even the youngest of children, always supervise interactions with these powerful canines closely — even a momentary lapse in judgement can be disastrous for both the child and the dog.

Unfortunately, this breed's patience doesn't always extend to other dogs, and they can be aggressive toward other canines. As a result, early socialization is crucial to ensure that your Pit Bull accepts other dogs, while you'll need to carefully supervise interactions with other canines.

However, it's also worth pointing out that there are a number of myths surrounding Pit Bulls and their temperament. Check out our guide to the truth about Pit Bulls to find out exactly what this breed has to offer.

American Pit Bull Terrier Activity Requirements

This active and athletic breed thrives when given at least an hour of activity per day. These dogs are more than happy to come along on either long hikes or short runs, and they love energetic activities like agility training, rally sports, frisbee, and flyball. Some Pit Bulls also love the water, but their muscular physique means they're often not particularly strong swimmers.

American Pit Bull Terriers were also sometimes employed as farm dogs in America and may occasionally excel at herding exercises or tracking trials — activities that engage the mind as well as the body.

She is 100% pit terrier, got her from the pound as a puppy. She is extremely beta and nonviolent. I keep rereading all these temperaments the breed is supposed to have, and i am always dumbstruck! I mean as soon as anything gets serious she just lays down and goes submissive. Its honestly crazy haha

She is quick to learn tricks - sometimes even things we didn’t mean to teach. She taught herself to bring a toy to guests in excitement instead of jumping. She’s non destructive when left home alone even if it is for several hours. She is very careful not to bite and lets go of toys immediately if she feels skin in her mouth. The only negatives I can give are that she likes to chase the cat (although he baits her into it half the time and they’re buddies who even nap together) and that she sheds all the time. She’s not great with dogs her own size or larger, but doesn’t show aggression, just disinterest or avoidance (sometimes trying to get me to pick her up if she feels cornered). She’s great with smaller dogs, letting them win tug and ‘tackle’ her down and is even good with sharing her food. She doesn’t like violence and will try to break it up by jumping between people with a grumble if family members even jokingly hit each other. That said she’s also prone to happy growls and play growls that can sound downright demonic if you’re not familiar with her, or pitties or other breeds that do that (like rotties). Oh, and she licks a lot. Like, a LOT. Too much. She would lick my leg for a half hour, easily, if I let her and that’s not even sort of an exaggeration. But she’s cuddly and kissy and good at cosleeping and doesn’t destroy anything that isn’t hers. She knows the difference between my stuffed animals and hers. She guts her own toys all the time but has never harmed one of ours, or any pillows or shoes for that matter even though she likes to carry those around. She isn’t great on the leash but I’m certain that’s my fault and not breed related. She stays with me and listens well off-leash but seems too focused on hating having a leash on to listen when leashed which makes going out difficult. Anyway she likes to be active and even enjoys swimming / water fetch - though she does require a doggy life vest in order to effectively stay afloat. Her first time swimming she struggled and seemed intrigued but became frightened when she couldn’t reach the ground. Her confidence soared once we got her the life vest and she didn’t have to fight to keep her head above water. Now she eagerly leaps off docks into ponds and lakes after thrown toys, so long as she’s wearing it. She’s such a good girl, I don’t know how we even got so lucky. Oh yeah... she did get Happy Tail once and ended up having to have a few inches of tail removed :c she couldn’t help it.

It’s all on the owner and the amount of planning that was put into breeding. Grew up around pits and finally own one of my own. These dogs are powerful animals and shouldn’t be taken lightly by any means, that being said the energy and time that you put into studying the breed, knowing your own dogs personality and tendencies, and exercising your dog will be a direct reflection of the result you get with your pup. Just like anything in life what you put in is what you get out. Milo is the most friendly, human loving, dog loving, family oriented, companion I could ask for however, he is very well trained and hours of training and studying have been put in to get this result, these dogs are loving, kid friendly, pet friendly animals who have the power to both walk away from a 5 year old who slaps them around and the aggressive dog up the street or to attack in both these situations. At the end of the day your dog is a direct reflection of you as an owner and your decision making. With a dog this powerful and energetic an owner who can’t claim an alpha position or one who is lazy and can’t meet the exercise and mental stimulation requirements needed for a well mannered dog will surely fail before the relationship even starts!! On the other hand an experience owner who is active, patient, and willing to spend time training this breed will have no problems

My Pitbul Louie is by far my best buddy! I have a 22 yo daughter that I raised on my own since I was very young. She’s now on her own, and I’m going a little stir crazy. Mostly because I was always a homemaker and her caretaker. So now what? My daughter rescued Louie from a pretty bad environment. She couldn’t keep pets at her apartment, so she asked me to let Louie to stay with me, until she can find a place for him. I knew very little about Pitbuls, and was hesitant at first because of the “stigma”. That ended up changing fast, as I became attached very quickly! Louie was definitely a total sweetheart. As time passed, I realized that Louie is becoming more than a temporary stay. My daughter couldn’t find stable housing and I began to have a feeling that she has done this with the intention of helping to fill a void in my life. A couple months later, Louie was tragically struck by a car. I was devastated and rushed him to a 24 hour Animal hospital in Boston. He sustained a broken leg and needed surgery. The Dr gave me a few options of how to proceed 1) I could have his leg amputated for $3,000. 2) bring him back for a surgical repair or his leg for $6000. All money has to be paid in full and there’s no financing. So I took Louie home. He cried and moaned every day for three weeks! The time it took to raise all of the money to operate. I raised enough to save his leg and I would do it again. I’m happy to say that it’s been about a year since the accident, and Louie is up and running like he had done in the past!! I will never forget my pain I felt by feeling his pain. Carrying him outside to pee and cleaning the wound constantly. This is only something I will do for the ones that I truly love!!

My Pitty is an absolute cinnamon roll. She loves playing with her Whippet sister and is very gentle when playing with her feline siblings. She's very good with children, I've never had to worry about leaving her alone with my young sister. She's surprisingly low energy though and loves to sleep all the time.

My dog is very sweet with family, however she does tend to be a velcro dog when it comes to me. My family rescues abused, mistreated, and stray animals which is how we got most of our pitts and i have noticed that every one of them tends to pick one person but they are each equally as sweet and playful

He is a rescue pup. I got him in valentines day. He was very timid when I tried to get him into the car but slowly warmed up to us. He was afraid of stairs so I had to carry him and all of him 50 pounds of gloriousness up the stairs when we would go on walks. He also doesn't react to dog toys but would rather play with cat toys. He loves feathers and the cat chase mouse games.

I got my APBT bulldog mix when she was 9 months old. She is the sweetest dog in the world. She LOVES to cuddle and always has to be touching someone. I dedicated a lot of time to training her when I got her and she was very receptive and is unbelievably well-behaved. She loves all people and loves to play with other friendly dogs. The bulldog in her makes her very tenacious when playing however. When we play fetch or go swimming, she can’t focus on anything else but that which can sometimes get frustrating but overall she is absolutely wonderful and the light of my life.

Our dog is a home run for us.She is extremely loving and affectionate toward everyone in our household. She is very protective over us and extremely loyal and give uncountable amount of kisses and she’s always happy to be around us. She has energy as excitement is concerned. She is super easy to train. If you let her outside and ask her to come back with no leash she will come right back we do not have to chase her down. She is the best dog an owner could ask for. She shows nothing but love and devotion to us and we are glad and overjoyed to have her in our family.
