An Aussie Pom is the mix between a purebred standard, mini, or toy Australian Shepherd and Pomeranian. They are bred to be companion dogs because of their manageable size and amicable temperament. They are known to be loyal, trainable, and affectionate. Because they are a social breed, they do not like to be alone for long periods of time and need regular exercise. Aussie Poms have a relatively long average life span of 12 to 15 years. Their weight, measurements, and color vary widely, but will generally look like an undersized Shepherd with Pomeranian features and Australian Shepherd markings. They have soft, full, and straight coats that require regular brushing. Currently, Aussie Poms are unable to join the American Kennel Club roster of purebreds, but are growing in popularity in North America and Europe.

Aussi Pom Breed History

The name Aussie Pom is a combination of the two nicknames of its parent breeds: the Australian Shepherd, known as an “Aussie”, and Pomeranian, known as a “Pom” or “Pom Pom”. Pomeranians are named for the Pomerania region in current day Germany and Poland, but descended from larger “Spitz” dogs that were bred to be sled dogs in arctic regions of the world. Pomeranians became popular at the turn of the 18th century by England’s Queen Victoria who contributed to the trend of breeding them “down” to the size they are today. The Australian Shepherd, contrary to popular belief, is not from Australia. These dogs are likely to have been breed from Collie varieties in the early 1900s to herd sheep in the western United States. The Australian Shepherd’s popularity boomed during the 1950s and they are now employed as handicap guides, therapy dogs, drug detectors, search and rescue workers, and – of course – beloved family pets. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1993. Depending on the breeder, Aussie Poms can be a product of two Aussie Poms or one Australian Shepherd parent and one Pomeranian parent. This mix is a relatively new breed and there is not an exact date of origin for it. However, because of its manageable size and cute fox-like features, it is a growing favorite in the United States and United Kingdom where Pomeranians and Australian Shepherds are common. Currently, Aussie Poms are not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). As such, breeders should be thoroughly researched if you are considering purchasing through them.

Aussi Pom Breed Appearance

Aussie Poms typically look like small Shepherds with fox-like, Pomeranian facial features. The size depends on whether the Pomeranian is bred with a regular, mini, or toy Australian Shepherd. Generally, the breed is medium-sized. The average weight is 10 to 30 pounds and the average height is 12 to 17 inches tall. The breadth of coat variations within each parent breed account for the Aussie Pom’s range of patterns and colors. They usually have a straight, soft, and medium-length coat in red merle, blue merle, tri-color (black, white, and tan), or a solid color with light Australian Shepherd markings. The tail is medium length and feathered with a soft coat. Aussie Poms have an alert and intelligent expression, with high-set pendent ears, a tapered muzzle, and medium-sized oval eyes.

Aussi Pom Breed Maintenance

Aussie Poms do a fair amount of shedding due their medium length coat. Owners can reduce shedding through regular brushing and monthly baths with shampoo and conditioner. Given this breed’s tendency for plaque buildup, Aussie Poms (like all dogs) should have their teeth brushed daily, as well as nails clipped 1 to 2 times a month. Some owners prefer to clip their Aussie Pom’s coat around the eyes, ears, and paws, but regular cutting and styling is not usually necessary. Owners should, however, take special care to inspect Aussie Poms after they have been outside for debris that might get caught in their ample coats.

Aussie Poms can suffer from a variety of health concerns. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Wag! Wellness lets pet parents compare insurance plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Aussi Pom Activity Requirements

Aussie Poms are known to be very friendly and amicable to people, including children and other dogs. The breed is affectionate and will most likely develop strong attachments to its primary owner and other family members. Like many Shepherd varieties, it is a loyal watchdog and will bark if there is cause for “alarm” or a perceived threat. Even so, well-adapted Aussie Poms are not known to be over-territorial or aggressive to strangers. The Aussie Pom’s affable nature and ability to make fast friends makes it an easy and wonderful family pet. Beyond this, Aussie Poms are regarded as an extremely trainable breed. They are very responsive to discipline, especially at an early age. Though the breed is generally adaptable, it is very social and does not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Consequently, Aussie Poms thrive best in active environments with lots of people time.

This has been an experience. We have another dog who doesn't do anything that the aussie pom does. The ausssie pom has chewed furniture, doors, mattresses and doesn't go outside to potty unless he wants to, so that means lots of messes to clean up. He pees and poops on the concrete outside even though the other dog goes on the grass and we physically put him on the grass. Constantly needs to be held or given affection when you're home, does not like to be left alone and whines/cries if he is. The grooming is very involved and requires brushing daily unless you want hairballs everywhere. I would recommend this type of dog to someone who can stay home all day to attend to it's needs.

He is the sweetest most loving puppy and loves lots of physical contact. He loves his variety of toys and frequently carries his favorite stuffed hotdog around. Everywhere he goes he runs as fast as his little legs will go and he is a constant source of entertainment.

My Gracie is a very sweet pup. When I first got her at 8 weeks she was tiny and very, very fluffy. Now she is almost 5 months and has gotten tall and skinny. She is also not nearly as fluffy. Still super adorable though. She loves to cuddle and has a lot of energy. I made the mistake of giving her human food and now she struggles with eating her dog food, but it is a work in progress. She is smart and loves other dogs!

Raised from a puppy, Charles has always been a wonderful, intelligent and sweet little man. He loves playing with other dogs and making new friends. He does possess watchdog like features and will bark/growl out the window . He had beautiful fox like features and two different colored eyes. I'd highly recommend the breed.

My boy is a therapy dog. He is super smart and taught tricks in 1 or 2 days. He knows about 14 tricks now including playing Soccer and hide and seek. He loves to play and realllyy loves treats but what dog doesnt? When we go out for walks we have matching scarfs and sometimes I put his shirt on him and people say he looks like a little lumberjack. I can also put his fur in a small manbunn. Even when we go out with no shirt on him (usually when its warmer weather) people still stop and ask if they can pet him. He loves meeting new people and we hot him with his little brother which my twin sister has also for a therapy dog.

My mini Aussi Pom, Milo, is the sweetest little puppy. He’s 5 months, he loves playing with other dogs (from mini golden doodles to German Shepard’s), loves to play fetch, jumping in water, and long walks. He has A LOT of energy and is very smart. Learns tricks in one day! A very obedient, lovable dog. They do get stubborn though if you show no attention to them or leave them alone too long, the mini Aussie Pom LOVES attention and will continue to bark until you do so. The only thing bad issue I’ve had with this breed is the bark- something no one told me, it’s very high pitch.... which can make it hard to leave your pup alone if you live in an apartment. But with proper training, anything is possible to correct!

Joey is the sweetest little guy ever. Very, very smart. Affectionate. Lots of tricks. Healthy, has never been sick. Doesn't bark at all except when we get really rowdy playing with him. Loves everyone. Has never gotten rough or overly aggressive when playing. He is not destructive at all. We have had English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Shetland Sheepdogs, and Bichons in my family my whole life but this little boy is the best dog I have ever been around. The only problem we have ever had with him is he will chew up any clothing item that has a crotch in it. Pants, shorts, pajamas, underwear, swimsuits, clean, dirty, whatever. He will completely empty a hamper and chew them up. He will dig in the clean laundry and destroy them...every pair. We have to be so careful. Can't leave a basket of laundry waiting to be folded. Good thing he's so stinking cute!! We do love this little boy.
