The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound has been used to track animals that have been wounded by the hunter. He is a scent hound that can go into mountainous regions and track. He comes from Germany and is guessed to have been developed in the 1870s. He is also known as the Bayrischer Gebirgsschweisshund. All Hounds descend from the original hunting dogs called Bracken. Scent Hounds evolved from the most calm and submissive of the Bracken, creating the Schweisshunde or Liam Hound. These dogs were closely bred from the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century. During this time the Hanoverian Scent Hound became known. As previous hunting methods became out of date, hunters began to see the necessity of true Scent Hounds. Firearms were improved and became more accurate at longer ranges. The Hanovarian Scent Hound was too heavily boned and did not have the ability or perseverance to track wounded animals, especially in mountainous regions. The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound was created by Baron Karg-Bebenburg, Reichenhall of Barvaria. He used the Hanovarian Bloodhound and the Tyrolean Scent Hound to create the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound. Because of the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound’s ability to work so well over rough terrain, he has become the go-to scent hound for professional hunters and game keepers. In 1912, the Club for Bavarian Mountain Scent Hounds was created and is located in Munich, Germany. This club is the only dog club dedicated to the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound within Germany. It is unsure when the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound was first imported into the United States, but in 2016 he was officially accepted into the American Kennel Club (AKC) Foundation Stock Service. This is the first step in becoming fully recognized by the AKC as a breed that is able to be registered with and compete at all AKC sanctioned events.
