The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound is not a well known dog, even in their homeland of Germany. Most Bavarian Mountain Scent Hounds sold in Germany are sold to people who are using them as working dogs, not necessarily as a family companion. That does not mean he cannot be an excellent companion, however, he does require a lot of mental and physical stimulation to keep him happy. Overall, he is a level-headed dog who can be an asset to a household. He can tend to be a one person dog, showing his affection and loyalty to the person who trains him. He will still be friendly towards other family members and will be wary of strangers.

Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound Breed History

The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound has been used to track animals that have been wounded by the hunter. He is a scent hound that can go into mountainous regions and track. He comes from Germany and is guessed to have been developed in the 1870s. He is also known as the Bayrischer Gebirgsschweisshund. All Hounds descend from the original hunting dogs called Bracken. Scent Hounds evolved from the most calm and submissive of the Bracken, creating the Schweisshunde or Liam Hound. These dogs were closely bred from the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century. During this time the Hanoverian Scent Hound became known. As previous hunting methods became out of date, hunters began to see the necessity of true Scent Hounds. Firearms were improved and became more accurate at longer ranges. The Hanovarian Scent Hound was too heavily boned and did not have the ability or perseverance to track wounded animals, especially in mountainous regions. The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound was created by Baron Karg-Bebenburg, Reichenhall of Barvaria. He used the Hanovarian Bloodhound and the Tyrolean Scent Hound to create the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound. Because of the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound’s ability to work so well over rough terrain, he has become the go-to scent hound for professional hunters and game keepers. In 1912, the Club for Bavarian Mountain Scent Hounds was created and is located in Munich, Germany. This club is the only dog club dedicated to the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound within Germany. It is unsure when the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound was first imported into the United States, but in 2016 he was officially accepted into the American Kennel Club (AKC) Foundation Stock Service. This is the first step in becoming fully recognized by the AKC as a breed that is able to be registered with and compete at all AKC sanctioned events.

Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound Breed Appearance

The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound should be muscular and medium sized. His body is slightly longer than high and he is higher in the rear. His skin is tight fitting to his body. His coat is dense and close fitting to his body; it is moderately harsh and is not overly glossy. There are finer hairs on his head and harsher, longer hair on his tail, legs and belly to protect him from the rough terrain. The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound’s color can be brindle, reddish brown or tan. He can also be a fawn color, ranging from clear fawn to biscuit, or red, ranging from a deep red to a deer red. His coat can be interspersed with black hairs. The color on his back is more intense. His muzzle, nose and eye rims are dark. He has a darker tail and can also have a white or light colored patch on his chest known as the Bracken Star.

Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound Breed Maintenance

Even though the Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound has a close fitting coat, it is a dense coat and can shed. He does need to be brushed once a week to keep dead or loose hairs from shedding all over the furniture or your clothing. Weekly brushing will also keep his coat clean and healthy. Use a natural bristle brush when grooming. He does not need many baths, only two to three times per year unless he has gotten into something foul smelling. Trim his nails as needed, usually every two to three weeks. Because his ears hang down, they should be checked weekly for dirt or any foul odor. Be sure to clean his ears as needed to prevent infection. Simply wipe out his ears using a cotton ball dipped in hydrogen peroxide. Set up a routine dental plan including weekly brushing using canine approved toothpaste. Yearly professional cleanings might be necessary.

Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound Temperament

The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound is very loyal to his owner. In family situations he will typically choose one person as his special person, usually the one who trains him. He will form a special bond with that person but will also be affectionate to all members of the family. He is a level headed, self assured dog but he does require a lot of mental and physical stimulation. He does great playing games and figuring out puzzles. He is reserved with strangers and will sound the alarm when strangers come near his property. The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound should never show any signs of aggression. Because he is a scent hound, he does require a strong, secure fence to keep him from searching out prey. He generally does well with other dogs, but should be watched with small, toy dogs and other small pets such as rabbits, cats and guinea pigs.

Best dog ever. Never had problems letting him off the lead. Very obidient and lovely character affectionate to the whole family, open to strangers, though alert and barks first. He loved all our cats. Friendly to other dogs, very socialized... calm and good when in the house. Likes to be in a kennel too, when we are away. The only bad thing, he's greedy about food and would probably get big if not fed controled :)
