Beaglier

The Beaglier was developed in Australia in the 1990’s.  Dog breeders wanted to combine the Beagle and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to produce a fun-loving, great temperament dog, which was not scent driven and would have less inherited genetic conditions. 

This dog breed has become popular in the United Kingdom.  They are a fairly modern dog breed therefore, there is not a lot of documented history on them.  However, there is a lot of historical information on the Beagle and on the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. 

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel originated in England and was a companion pet. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was named by King Charles I of Britain in the 1600s. Only royalty and aristocrats kept the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as companions. King Charles II was so fond of the dog breed he wrote a decree that allowed the King Charles Spaniel in any public place, which included the House of Parliament. 

As time went on, the dog breed was crossbred and their appearance was altered.  The muzzle was shorter, the face flat, skull domed and the ears low set.  The original appearance of the King Charles Spaniel became almost extinct. An American by the name of Roswell Eldridge began the ball rolling to return the King Charles Spaniel to their original appearance in 1926.  He wanted them to look like the painting “The Cavalier Pets”, painted in 1845 by Sir Edwin Landseer. Mr. Eldridge offered cash prizes for dogs that looked like King Charles II’s companions. In 1928 a dog owned by Miss Mostyn Walker, was awarded the prize. The dog’s name was Ann’s Son and he would help return the dog breed to their original look.  

This dog breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1995. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has made wonderful and loving pets to celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Diane Sawyer, Courtney Cox, Liv Tyler and President Ronald Reagan. Beagle-type dogs have existed for over 2,500 years. The modern breed originated in Great Britain around the 1800s. They were bred to track hares. The dog breed is known as a scent hound. A scent hound depends on their sense of smell during a hunt and not their sight. Originally, they were much smaller than the Beagle of today. They could fit in a pocket.  Hunters depended on a pack of beagles for the hunt. 

Beagles were imported into United States in the 1860s. The Beagle was accepted as a dog breed by the American Kennel Club in 1885. As of 2017, the American Kennel Club ranks the Beagle in the top ten of popular dog breeds. The Beaglier is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, Dog Registry of America and the Designer Dogs Kennel Club.
