Beago

Because the Beago is relatively new, it is important to look at the history of the parent breeds. Originating in England in the 1300s, the Beagle was bred from other hounds to hunt rabbits and other small game. Some of the breeds thought to be related to the Beagle include the Southern Hound, North Country Beagle, and the Talbot Hound. They are also thought to be descendants of the pack hounds that were around during the Roman era and may even be related to the Harrier. The Beagle is a scent hound and has the uncanny ability to track rabbits and other animals with their amazing sensitive nose. The name, Beagle, is believed to be from the French word meaning “open throat” because of how the Beagle bays. The breed was used to hunt rabbits because of their small size but they are known to be able to track larger animals as well. President Lyndon B. Johnson was fond of Beagles and had one of his own in the White House in the 1840s and the well-known cartoon dog, Snoopy, was a Beagle. In 1885, the American Kennel Club acknowledged the Beagle and they are the 5^th most popular breed of dog in America. The Golden Retriever also came from England but originated in the 1800s as a retriever and gundog. They are reportedly bred from the Red Setter, Flat-coated Retriever, Wavy-coated Retriever, Yellow Retriever, and Tweed Water Spaniel. The first of this breed are thought to be from Lord Tweedmouth Dudley Marjoribanks who bred them on his Scotland estate but some believe they were around before then. The American Kennel Club accepted the Golden Retriever in 1925 where they are the 3^rd most popular breed of dog.
