The Beago is a unique mix of the Beagle and Golden Retriever breeds that grows to be about 19 inches tall and weighs 40 pounds on average. They are usually brown or tricolored like a Beagle but may also be combinations of black, brown, white, cream, red, fawn, brindle, or pied. The length and texture of their coat depends on which parent breed they take after the most but it is usually medium length, straight, and soft with a medium density. They are great hunters and make excellent family pets as well, with a keen ability to learn and please their owners.

Beago Breed History

Because the Beago is relatively new, it is important to look at the history of the parent breeds. Originating in England in the 1300s, the Beagle was bred from other hounds to hunt rabbits and other small game. Some of the breeds thought to be related to the Beagle include the Southern Hound, North Country Beagle, and the Talbot Hound. They are also thought to be descendants of the pack hounds that were around during the Roman era and may even be related to the Harrier. The Beagle is a scent hound and has the uncanny ability to track rabbits and other animals with their amazing sensitive nose. The name, Beagle, is believed to be from the French word meaning “open throat” because of how the Beagle bays. The breed was used to hunt rabbits because of their small size but they are known to be able to track larger animals as well. President Lyndon B. Johnson was fond of Beagles and had one of his own in the White House in the 1840s and the well-known cartoon dog, Snoopy, was a Beagle. In 1885, the American Kennel Club acknowledged the Beagle and they are the 5th most popular breed of dog in America. The Golden Retriever also came from England but originated in the 1800s as a retriever and gundog. They are reportedly bred from the Red Setter, Flat-coated Retriever, Wavy-coated Retriever, Yellow Retriever, and Tweed Water Spaniel. The first of this breed are thought to be from Lord Tweedmouth Dudley Marjoribanks who bred them on his Scotland estate but some believe they were around before then. The American Kennel Club accepted the Golden Retriever in 1925 where they are the 3rd most popular breed of dog.

Beago Breed Appearance

The Beago is a medium sized dog with large almond-shaped brown eyes, a black nose that is always busy, floppy ears, and an inquisitive and happy-go-lucky attitude. Their coat is of medium density and may be short or long, soft, shiny, smooth, and is usually straight but can be a bit wavy depending on the parentage. They are usually either golden or tri-colored like a Beagle but may also be black, brown, red, cream, fawn, white, pied, brindle, or any combination of these colors. Their body is square like the Beagle but larger, and more muscular like the Golden Retriever.

Beago Breed Maintenance

Grooming your Beago is not a complicated process and brushing two or three times a week with a pin brush is usually sufficient. If your dog has a shorter coat like a Beagle, you can get away with just brushing her once a week with a slicker brush but longer fur may need extra attention. You should also be sure to clean your Beago’s ears once a week with cotton balls dipped in warm water and look for redness, irritation, earwax buildup, and ear mites. Be sure to trim your dog’s toenails with nail trimmers when necessary, usually about once a month or when you can hear them clicking on the floor.

Beagos can suffer from a variety of potentially costly health issues. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Wag! Wellness lets pet parents compare insurance plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Beago Temperament

Because both the Beagle and the Golden Retriever are lovable and friendly dogs, they are perfect family dogs and have an easy-going temperament so they get along great with everyone. They enjoy playing with other pets, whether they are yours or belong to someone else. However, they may still have a high enough prey drive to chase rabbits and squirrels so you should keep your dog on a leash when you go to the park or for a walk. They are good with kids of any age and can tolerate quite a bit of aggravation but should still be supervised with small children.

Beago Activity Requirements

Your Beago loves to run, jump, and play so they would enjoy playing in the yard with kids or other dogs for an hour or two every day. The Beago would also enjoy a trip to the dog park, taking a long walk, or hiking. They do need at least 45 minutes to an hour of vigorous exercise daily to keep them from becoming bored or anxious. If they do not burn off their excess energy they may develop bad habits such as tearing things up or chewing on things they are not supposed to chew on. They also have a tendency to become obese so it is important for them to get enough exercise.

Our beago is a great dog, she is lively and friendly and pretty smart. She loves all people and kids (although we don't have any children) and is super friendly towards other dogs. She still has a lot of puppy energy but has been pretty easy to train. She is sassy like a beagle but kind and loving like a golden. She's about 38 lbs and we don't expect her to grow much more.

Question

I have a puppy who we adopted and got a breed test for. She populated 18% Labrador retriever, 17% boxer, 16% beagle, along with 13 other breeds. In the information we got, it seems that carries the gene for wavy/curly hair (inherited from mini poodle). We are trying to identify her approximate age, maybe you can help? We think she’s somewhere in the ball park if 4-6 months, she is starting to teeth and even lost a tooth. Any information helps, thanks
