Beauceron

France
Berger de Beauce, Bas-Rouge

The Beauceron is smart, assertive, independent and often stubborn. Dogs of the breed have the size and skill to defend their home and family if necessary. It will be important that a Beauceron receives the appropriate training and socialization; he will mature slowly, acting like a puppy until he is around three years old. If raised with cats, a dog of the breed may be able to get along well with them, though as he will have a strong prey drive, he may be apt to chase them. It is very difficult, if not impossible, to wear out a Beauceron. Those considering a dog of this breed should be high energy and enjoy active exercise on a daily basis where a dog could participate. When a Beauceron is bored, he will be destructive.

Beauceron Breed History

The earliest document that mentions the Beauceron, known as the largest of the French sheepdogs, is a Renaissance manuscript from 1578; the large herding dog was typically used by farmers to drive and protect sheep and cattle as well as guard the family. The breed’s name comes from the area that surrounds Paris that is known as La Beauce. It is thought that the Beauceron may be found in the Doberman’s ancestry. In 1863 two types of sheepdogs from France were separated into two breeds; the Briard, which has a long coat, and the Beauceron, which has a short coat. The breed was first registered with the Societe Centrale Canine in 1893 with the first breed club established in 1922. The breed was popular in France, however, not known in the rest of the world. The Beauceron was used as a messenger dog by the French army in World War I and II, taking advantage of its abilities to follow directions, detect mines and follow trails. Even today, the Beauceron is used in police and military work, as well as to protect the home and family. Beginning in the 1960’s, the Beauceron’s popularity grew in France as well as outside the country, with the Beauceron Club of America forming in 1980 and the breed becoming a part of the Miscellaneous Class by the AKC in 2001.

Beauceron Breed Appearance

The Beauceron has been described as a solid, balanced dog. The breed has front legs and hindquarters that include powerful muscles, ensuring the dog can be active for long periods of time without tiring. Their feet are round and strong with black nails and firm pads. The muzzle is not narrow or pointed and dogs of the breed have full jaws with powerful teeth meeting in a scissor bite. Those of the Beauceron breed have large, somewhat oval eyes that are dark brown and display confidence. Their thick ears are set high and can be kept natural or cropped; when cropped they will stand upright. The neck of the Beauceron is muscled, holding the head of the dog upright, adding to the appearance of self-assurance the breed exhibits. The tail is naturally carried down and should not be docked; when a Beauceron is moving, the tail is raised. Dogs of this breed have an effortless and fluid gait, causing it to appear as if the dog is gliding.

Beauceron Breed Maintenance

Despite the double-coat of the breed, grooming of the Beauceron is relatively minimal. You will want to brush your dog one or two times each week (more brushing may be required during periods of increased shedding). It is important that a Beauceron be able to participate in mentally and physically stimulating activities, without which he can become bored and destructive. As the Beauceron loves being a part of his family, he should not be left in a kennel, but able to spend time with his family while engaging in outdoor activity and exercise (particularly off leash). It is recommended that a Beauceron have access to a large, fenced-in yard.

Beauceron Temperament

The Beauceron is an intelligent dog who is both courageous and calm. This clever canine learns well, is known for being loyal, and wants to please and protect its family. A protective breed, Beaucerons make great guard dogs. Beaucerons may be wary of strangers and in most cases, do not get along with strange dogs. Dogs of the breed can usually adapt to other pets in the home if introduced when young. Should a family include young children, the Beauceron may attempt to herd them, making them a less than ideal choice for households with little ones in the mix. It is important that a Beauceron get proper training so that it does not take on the role of the “boss”. Early training will help make the most of the breed’s intelligence, ability to learn quickly, and drive. Praise, play, and food rewards are helpful. A Beauceron will push back when asked to do something in an effort to test you as to whether you mean what you say.

Our Daisy has been the most loyal, sweet, intelligent dog I've ever known. She is now 12 1/2 years old and has reached the end of her life. She was very energetic until she reached about 10 or 11. From the first day we took her home, she has faithfully guarded and protected us. She still sits on the steps inside the house and watches out the window for potential uninvited guests. I truly believe she would fight anyone or anything to the death to protect us. Because of this, we were unable to crate her, as she could not do her "job" locked inside a crate. Her primal instincts prompted her to sleep in a corner of the room facing the door since she was a puppy. She also is very unfriendly to visitors, so it's very important to properly socialize this breed. Training her was so easy in every case but one. That girl cannot help herself when it comes to food. She can make your lunch disappear in 1.5 seconds and we've never been able to break her of it. We love her so much, we just learned to work around her sneaky food tricks. There are not enough words to express how much we love her. I would recommend this breed to anyone who has the time and resources to socialize and the energy to keep them properly exercised and are able to raise a dog without the use of a crate.

We got Zeke 5 months ago and fell in love immediately, having driven 9 hours to pick him up he was tested with a long car ride and did amazing. He did contract Parvo and was in the hospital for a few days but he is fully recovered. He is currently in obedience training and will be trained as a protection dog in the future. Zeke is energetic, loving and every day is an adventure, he makes us laugh every day and can’t wait to see him fully grown and fully trained.

We love our little puupy. Smartest dog we've ever owned and I grew up with Dobermans! He is loving, affectionate, smart and a great outdoorsman. We have 2 tween boys and so happy that our pup can run along them when they ride their scooters and chase after them when they ride their bikes. I enjoy running and am so happy that Bruno at only 3.5mos can keep a great pace! He's perfect for our energetic family.
