Black Mouth Cur
Pomeranian

The Black Mouth Pom Cur is a hybrid breed. It is a mixture of the Black Mouth Cur and the Pomeranian. This mixture makes for a very unique breed, as the Black Mouth Cur is traditionally a hunter and the Pomeranian is a toy-sized companion dog. The Black Mouth Pom Cur is truly a mixture of the two breeds. He will be somewhat larger than a Pomeranian but generally, will have long hair like the Pomeranian. The Black Mouth Cur is a relatively new breed; its origins date back to 1964. The Pomeranian is descended from the ancient Spitz breeds and is closely related to the Samoyed, American Eskimo Dog, and the German Spitz. Early Pomeranians weighed about thirty pounds; the Black Mouth Pom Cur will be near that weight.  The Black Mouth Cur is a highly trainable and intelligent dog. The Pomeranian is also very smart and full of life. The Pomeranian often thinks he is a much bigger dog and is not above challenging other dogs. They also have a tendency to bark a lot. Because the Black Mouth Pom Cur is likely to have a long coat, he will need a good bit of grooming to keep his coat shiny and clean.

Black Mouth Pom Cur Breed History

The Black Mouth Cur is not one to be indoors; however, when carefully bred with the Pomeranian, owners can have a medium-sized dog who serves as a great indoor companion. The name Black Mouth Pom Cur is a mixture of the names of both parent breeds. The Black Mouth Cur originated in the southern United States; in 1964, a man named L.H. Ladner shared his breeding records. His family had bred the dog and the extensive records proved the origin of the Black Cur bloodline. It is unknown exactly what breeds were combined prior to this point to create the modern Black Mouth Cur; we do know that he is an excellent hunting dog. The Pomeranian is distantly related to the Northern Spitz family of dogs. Poms have always been popular; it is said that Martin Luther (the church reformer), Michelangelo, Isaac Newton, and Mozart all owned Pomeranians. The Pomeranian was also popular in royal circles. Even Queen Victoria owned a Pomeranian, and many believe that Queen Victoria – who was quite the dog breeder – is influential in breeding the smaller size into Pomeranians. The Pomeranian is recognized by the American Kennel Club; it was added to the studbook in 1888. It has always been a very popular breed, especially since its introduction in America. The Black Mouth Pom Cur is recognized by the DRA – Dog Registry of America. Old Yeller features a Black Mouth Cur.

Black Mouth Pom Cur Breed Appearance

The Black Mouth Cur is a medium-sized dog. He traditionally has a light tan coat; however, he may present in shades of yellow, fawn, and brindle. The black muzzle is normally a trademark characteristic of the Black Mouth Cur. He has medium-sized ears which usually hang. The length of his tail varies; it may be short from birth or longer. He can weigh up to 95 pounds. He generally has a short coat. While he is an outdoor dog, he does not have a waterproof coat. The Pomeranian is considered a toy-sized dog. The Pom comes in many colors: black, black and tan, blue, blue and tan, chocolate, chocolate and tan, cream, cream sable, orange, orange sable, red, red sable, sable, brindle, and white. At its highest weight, the Pomeranian is often only seven pounds. The Pomeranian has a long top coat and a short undercoat. Considering the genetics of both parent breeds, one can expect the Black Mouth Pom Cur to be about thirty pounds – roughly the size of the early Pomeranians. The Pom Cur will be about twelve inches in height. He will generally have the long, silky outer coat of the Pomeranian. The coloring will depend upon the Pomeranian parent, but often, the Pom Cur will be a light tan with black markings and a black muzzle.

Black Mouth Pom Cur Breed Maintenance

The Black Mouth Cur has short hair and is usually very easy to groom. Weekly brushing with a soft brush or grooming mitt is sufficient for the Black Mouth Cur. The Pomeranian has long, silky hair that must be groomed routinely. Also, Poms are considered fairly heavy shedders. They are also known to shed their undercoats multiple times a year. Unspayed females especially shed their undercoat when they are in season, when they deliver a litter, or when they are stressed. Experts recommend that owners brush their Poms twice weekly (at a minimum) with a wire slicker brush and metal comb. Because the Black Mouth Pom Cur is a hybrid breed, you can expect a mixture of the parent breed’s feature characteristics. Most Black Mouth Pom Curs have longer hair and the undercoat of the Pom, so similar brushing requirements are normal. You should brush your Black Mouth Pom Cur’s teeth at least three times a week and trim his nails every other week.

Black Mouth Pom Cur Temperament

The Black Mouth Cur was bred for hunting, and most experts say he is top of the class. He may hunt medium-sized game, or he may be used to hunt large prey such as bear. They also work with cattle. He is a natural hunter; breeders claim that he is often self-taught when it comes to hunting skills. The cur may be a tough dog on the hunt; however, with his family, he is kind, loyal, and protective. He is also good with children. His handler must be calm, confident, and authoritative. It is recommended that training begin as soon as the puppy is brought home. He is not to be trusted with smaller animals. It is not his intention to hurt other animals; it is his hunter’s instinct that causes him to be aggressive toward smaller non-canine animals. The Pomeranian is considered an extroverted dog who loves other people and animals. However, he believes he is much bigger than he actually is, and he may challenge other dogs at times. He is alert and curious. He may be prone to barking; it is recommended that training to stop barking on command begin at an early age. Most Pomeranians that are properly socialized do not exhibit the aggressiveness mentioned previously. This also helps with small children, as some Poms are not good with children unless socialized properly. Considering these traits, the Black Mouth Pom Cur should have a vibrant personality; however, he will need early socialization to become accustomed to small children, people other than their family, and other dogs. Because both parent breeds can be dominant, it is important to begin training at an early age. The Black Mouth Pom Cur is a perfect mixture of both parent breeds; one can expect him to be curious, intelligent, and alert.

Black Mouth Pom Cur Activity Requirements

The Black Mouth Cur is a very active dog who typically is not meant to be inside. He has a lot of energy and loves to run and chase prey. The Pomeranian is a very active dog as well. Pomeranians need mental as well as physical stimulation. Because of this, it is not unreasonable to believe that Black Mouth Pom Curs need a great deal of mental and physical stimulation as well. It is reasonable to think that the Pom Cur is able to stay indoors; he must, however, received enough exercise so that he is happy indoors. Be sure to have lots of toys that stimulate his mind. Games of tug or fetch are fine; the Pom Cur is going to need to fulfill both the hunter in his Black Cur background and the brilliance of the Pomeranian. A walk is good for the Pom Cur; take him to dog parks or let him run free outdoors if you have an area for him to do so.
