Jack Russell Terrier
The Bo-Jack is a small to medium sized dog with a lot of personality and spunk. Their face resembles a bulldog because of their ancestry and they have pointy ears like the Boston Terrier. They are usually white and black; gold and white; brown and white; or tan and white with a short, waterproof and weatherproof coat. Although the Boston Terrier was supposedly bred to be a fighter and the Jack Russell is a hunter, the Bo-Jack is a sweet and gentle but fun-loving, energetic pet. They need plenty of exercise and attention so be sure you are able to provide that before choosing a Bo-Jack for a pet.

Bo-Jack Breed History

Since the Bo-Jack is a new breed, the history is not known so the histories of the parent breeds are used in determining the characteristics of the Bo-Jack. The Boston Terrier was first bred as a ratter and fighting dog in the 1800s as a mix of an English White Terrier and an English Bulldog. The breed is known as the American Gentleman because they were created in America (Boston) and because they are so gentle.

The Boston Terrier is thought to have originated in Boston when a man named Robert Hooper bought a Terrier type dog from another man. This dog was later known as Hooper’s Judge and is believed to be the parent breed to the original Terrier and Bull breeds in the 20th century. The offspring were eventually bred with French Bulldogs and smaller Bull Terriers to create a smaller Boston Terrier. They were registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1893 and are the 21st most popular dog breed in the United States.

The Jack Russell Terrier originated in 1819 by Reverend John (Jack) Russell, who was a hunting enthusiast. The dog he bought was a white and tan female named Trump that he got from a milkman in Europe. Her heritage was traced back to the English White Terrier and Fox Terrier. This breed became popular for hunting by the 1850s and was especially adept at flushing out foxes. The most important attribute to the Jack Russell Terrier was their ability to pursue and flush the fox without harming them. The more modern Jack Russell Terriers are bred with Welsh Corgis, Chihuahuas, and other small terriers. Now, the Jack Russell Terrier is known by other names such as the Parson Terrier or Parson Russell Terrier.

Bo-Jack Breed Appearance

This hybrid breed tends to look more like a Boxer or Bulldog than a Terrier because of the ancestry. They have a small and rounded head, usually with a short to medium snout like a bulldog. Their pointed triangular ears may be upright or drooping and they have slightly protruding eyes and a big smile. The Bo-Jack has a stocky and muscular but compact body with short legs and a long tail. Their short and smooth weatherproof coat comes in shades of white, tan, gold, brown, and black with a tuxedo-like pattern. They are beautiful and quirky with large feet and funny expressions.

Bo-Jack Breed Maintenance

The Bo-Jack is easy to groom with their short, hard coat and will only need to be brushed with a hard bristle or wire brush once or twice a week. They only need to be bathed if absolutely necessary because they stay pretty clean due to their waterproof coat. It is best not to shampoo them too often because it depletes the oils from the skin that they need to keep their hair and skin healthy. Their ears need to be cleaned and checked for earwax, dirt, and debris about once a week. Also, you should brush their teeth a few times a week to prevent dental issues.

Bo-Jacks often suffer from cherry eye. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Bo-Jack Activity Requirements

The Boston Terrier is one of the most loved house pets in the United States and although they were originally bred to be fighters, there is no sign of aggression in them now. The Jack Russell Terrier is a bit rambunctious and hyper but fun and lovable as well. The Bo-Jack has the best of both personalities and is an energetic and friendly part of the family that can also protect you from strangers. They tend to be hard to train so be prepared to be patient and you may want to hire a professional to do the hard parts like housebreaking and barking.

I have raised Lulu since she was 1 week old. She is a lively girl who loves the outdoors, but wants to be where ever her people are. She is very protective of myself and oddly enough my grandparents. She is still very active, even at 11 years old, still acts like a puppy most days.

loves walking in a pack. Chasing a ball,
Absolute delight. We have no fence, he has never wandered. Total lap dog. Bit nervous of loud noises. Great with other dogs. Wouldn't like being left gets very sad faced. Would have another in a heartbeat. Very easy to train. Will let us know when he is hungry. Grumbles when you move him and he is settled. Comical, alert, soft, gentle, energetic.

He is a super smart and loving dog and loves to be around people. Never runs too far away when off his leash. He has struggled with potty training, mostly because he is so hard-headed/stubborn. He sheds very little but his nails need to be trimmed often. This dog can jump VERY high and has an insane amount of energy, so he needs a lot of exercise or he will get bored/cranky and destructive. He goes through his toys very fast if they are not durable. All around great dog, but we struggle with him in an apartment.

Charles Barkley is an extremely energetic dog that never seems to get tired. He's a bit jumpy and protective but is still the best dog ever. Goes through toys very quickly but has never chewed anything he wasn't supposed to or destroyed something that wasn't "his". He's extremely smart and can be trained if you are consistent. Loves to play and is VERY cuddly.

She loves to go for walks, and greets every person we pass. after a 2-mi walk she collapses inside the door but it's only temporary. She usually gets a case of the zoomies after she's been outside, but then just as quickly snuggles next to me on the couch and goes to sleep. She loves chew toys and a huge rope is her favorite. She's great at playing fetch and she does eventually tire out and sleeps with a ball between your front legs.

I've had Zorah since she was a 9 week old pup. From the beginning I exposed her to everything to achieve a well balanced and loving dog. Knowing how temperamental the Jack Russell can be, I started training Day one and made sure she got plenty of exercise and drained out the Terrier energy every day. Today, she is friendly, outgoing, loving and everyone new is her best friend and I become chopped liver. To add for the section on how this breed is with other pets. I have a pet rabbit the same age, but I got the rabbit first. They are like brother and sister. She lays by him as he grooms her and she nuzzles into him. But you should always supervise your dog with every animal and she will not go near my rabbit unless I'm present.

Lily is 75% Jack Russel, 25% Boston. She loves people, especially children and goes out of her way to get people to pay attention to her, resorting to crawling towards them or rolling over on her back. Very energetic, needs time outside every day and loves going to the park to make sure all the squirrels are up into the trees. Loves to play and loves to have a job. She believes her main job is removing bottle caps from empty soda and water bottles. She is very smart, learns quickly and loves cuddling and watching TV with her people. Barks at every dog that comes across the TV screen.

After our last “Westin” died, we found that our 10yo terrier mutt (Jett) was lonely. We searched for adoptable puppies when we found Mako aged 5 1/2 months. A someone who has raised puppies, including several Golden retrievers, a Rottie/border collie and fostering a 1 yo female Pitbull from a crappy kennel in Baltimore, I thought I could train any dog. Mako is sweet, loving, loyal but is just like a small child. He listens when “HE” wants! He opens every bottle of any drink. We have gone thru at least 3 remotes. Yet he knows all commands including crawl and pray. And at less than a year old he learned hand signals for sit, down, crawl, shake, up-pretty and crawl-crawl! He has to snuggle by my legs under the sheet every night. We just adore our crazy bo-jack!!!

Car rides napping snacks
I got Pluto when he was 2 months old. At first he was scared of everything, but now he is a happy little burst of energy. He loves bigger dogs and has never shown any aggression. He does not like loud noises and garbage bags and is nervous around strange men, but loves most women. He adores car rides and snack time. He also likes being brushed.I love my little boy to the moon and back. He sleeps in my bed at night because he does not like rain or being cold. He is extremely hydrophobic. We also stuggled a bit with potty training. It took time, but every minute was worth it. He is a great companion.
