The Bohemian Shepherd is a unique, medium sized shepherd with an energetic, happy personality and a loving nature toward their family. They are not generally aggressive but will become protective of their family if they feel threatened, barking ferociously when the threat approaches. The Bohemian Shepherd will guard their family, especially children, from strangers and while usually friendly, they will not willingly accept a stranger’s presence when watching over children. The Bohemian Shepherd does very well with other dogs and pets within the home. They do have an excellent sense of smell and are used extensively within the Czech Republic as search and rescue dogs.

Bohemian Shepherd Breed History

The Bohemian Shepherd, also commonly known as the Chodsky Pes, is an old breed dating back to the 14th century. They were originally thought to be used to guard the Bohemian southwestern borders near the Chod region, somewhere close to the town of Domazlice. The local people of this region are called Chods and author Alois Jirasek wrote about the uprising of these people. In his writings he described the Bohemian Shepherd as a symbol of this uprising and eventually became part of a Czech folklore. The Bohemian Shepherd became nationally recognized after renowned Czech artist, Mikolas Ales, depicted them in several paintings. The Bohemian Shepherd is still depicted on the official badge of the Czech version of the Boy Scouts. Even though the breed dates back to the 14th century, they were not professionally bred until sometime in the 16th century. Breeding records were not well documented until much later. Historians believe larger kennels, possibly as part of aristocrats’ estates, contributed to the growth of the Bohemian Shepherd throughout the Czech Republic. Researchers also believe the Bohemian Shepherd is a predecessor to the German Shepherd Dog, although there has been no solid evidence that the two breeds are related. However, it took several more centuries before the German Shepherd Dog was created and with the two countries trading goods back and forth there is a good possibility the Bohemian Shepherd is an ancestor of the German Shepherd Dog. The Bohemian Shepherd began to lose popularity after World War II and the number of purebred dogs dwindled. In 1984 a few breeders began setting new standards for the breed and worked diligently to build the breed back to its former glory. Today, there are numerous breeders, most located within the Czech Republic. There are about 3,500 registered Bohemian Shepherds born since the new standards and breeding programs were implemented. The Bohemian Shepherd Lovers Club was started in 1991 to promote the breed.

Bohemian Shepherd Breed Appearance

The Bohemian Shepherd is a medium sized sheepdog. Many times they are confused with the long-haired German Shepherd Dog or the Shiloh Shepherd. Their length is just slightly longer than their height, giving them the look of being very boxy. They have a dense undercoat that is soft and downy. Their topcoat is long, straight and harsh to protect them from the unforgiving weather of their native land. Some coats are longer than others and their coat is generally fluffy. Their ears are small, set high on their head and erect. Their eyes are dark brown and almond shaped. They have a black nose and black pigmentation. They have a fluid gait that is unhurried and light. All Bohemian Shepherd puppies look almost exactly alike and do not show some individuality until they are between 6 and 7 months old. Their actual adult coloring including their tan markings does not begin to show until after 6 months of age. The Bohemian Shepherd is always black with tan markings. They can have white markings on their chest.

Bohemian Shepherd Breed Maintenance

The Bohemian Shepherd is not a hypoallergenic dog and does shed heavily seasonally. They do shed lightly throughout the year so expect to find hairs around the house. They need to be brushed weekly to keep tangles at bay. Their coat will tangle and become matted when they are out in the fields or forests. Use a pin brush and metal comb when grooming and carefully work through any tangles, paying close attention to behind their ears, under their front legs and their skirts, or the hair on the back of their thighs. A de-tangling spay can be used to help work through difficult tangles. To keep their coats in great condition, use a leave in conditioner after brushing. The Bohemian Shepherd does not require many baths. It is a good idea to plan on bathing them two or three times a year using a mild shampoo. Clean their ears weekly to keep any infection from occurring and clip their nails every few weeks as needed.

Bohemian Shepherd Temperament

The Bohemian Shepherd is an extremely intelligent dog that wants nothing more than to please their master. They make excellent obedience dogs and family companions. The Bohemian Shepherd does require a strong leader to work with them so they understand their place within the family. They need early socialization and training to ensure they are a well-adjusted member of the family. While not an aggressive breed, the Bohemian Shepherd will protect their family from strangers and will sound the alarm when someone suspicious approaches their home. They love spending time with children and get along well with other dogs and even smaller pets in the home. The Bohemian Shepherd has a great aptitude for working with disabled individuals and is a good choice as a service dog. They do well working as a search and rescue dog using their strong sense of smell to find victims, drugs or even bombs.

Bohemian Shepherd Activity Requirements

The Bohemian Shepherd is an active dog and does require long daily walks or playtime in the backyard to keep them happy and wear them out. Since the Bohemian Shepherd is a sheepdog, they are agile and intelligent. Dog sports such as agility, rally or obedience are excellent ways to bond with your Bohemian Shepherd and give them a task to perform each day. They are also excellent at scent work and would love to spend time sniffing out various smells. They do require a fenced yard when they cannot be out walking or jogging with you. The Bohemian Shepherd is a social breed and will become unhappy or depressed if left alone for too long.
