Bolo-Tzu Breed History

The Bolo-Tzu is a hybrid of the Bolognese and the Shih-Tzu.  The mix is a modern designer dog intended as a companion dog and does not have a long and well-known history.  As such, owners must look at the history of the breed parents to understand the history of this hybrid. The Bolognese is a toy companion breed of the Water Spaniel family.  French and Italian courtesans and nobility maintained the breed, which also goes by the name Bichon Bolognese and is closely related to the Bichon Frise; frise being a French word for frizzy and referring to the soft, frizzy hair on this white coated toy.  This breed’s Italian name, Bolognese, refers to the Italian province of Bologna, where the breed is thought to have developed. The Shi-Tzu is a breed of the Byzantine Empire and may have originated in Tibet.  Its name means lion in Chinese and is given for its little lion appearance.  The earliest record of the Shih-Tzu dates to the year 625, but the little dog has a long history in China as this breed was gifted to the Chinese nobility by Tibetan Monks.   Secret breeding programs designed for the Chinese royalty produced the modern-day Shih-Tzu and Tzu-Hsi, the 19th century royal concubine turned Empress of China was gifted a pair of Shih-Tzus by the Dali Lama.  This pair would become the foundation for all future royal Shih-Tzus and so beloved were her dogs that the punishment for cruelty to any palace dog was death.  Eventually, the Shih-Tzu was imported to England and the United States and became a recognized breed by the American Kennel Club in 1969. Today, the Bolo-Tzu is a true companion dog and considered a designer hybrid.  The Bolo-Tzu is recognized by the Designer Breed Registry, the International Designer Canine Registry, and the American Canine Hybrid Club.

Bolo-Tzu Breed Appearance

Despite the size of the Bolo-Tzu, the mix is a sturdy, compact hybrid.  The Bolo-Tzu coat color is usually white with colored markings, but the Shih-Tzu parent may add more color variation to the coat as well as length if your Bolo-Tzu leans towards its Shih-Tzu parent.  The feet of this hybrid are small and straight.  The Bolo-Tzu's tail is feathered and curls over the back.  The head of a Bolo-Tzu is round, and the muzzle is short.  The face can be flat, like that of the Shih-Tzu with a small nose that can make breathing difficult.  The Bolo-Tzu has large, prominent eyes that are dark brown.

Bolo-Tzu Breed Maintenance

The Bolo-Tzu is a hypoallergenic hybrid as both parent breeds are hypoallergenic. This breed does not shed much but requires frequent grooming and brushing to keep its medium to long length hair free of mats and looking its best.  Daily brushing is not mandatory but several times a week will be best.  While brushing your Bolo-Tzu, clean his ears with a veterinarian approved solution to remove any dirt, wax, or debris.  As a hypoallergenic mix, avoid bathing your Bolo-Tzu and stick to frequent brushing to distribute natural oils, to remove dead and loose hair, and to remove dirt and debris from the coat.  Routine teeth brushing and cleaning is also recommended to help reduce the chance of developing periodontal disease.

Bolo-Tzu Temperament

The Bolo-Tzu is an active, friendly dog that is affectionate with their families.  This hybrid is a sturdy hybrid and though it can be patient and loving toward children, does not like rough play.  However, if socialized early, the Bolo-Tzu makes for an excellent companion for older children and should be played with on the floor and not picked up by children, especially as puppies, to avoid falls.  Both parent breeds are docile and friendly toward strangers and will not vocalize much at all. The Bolo-Tzu is dog and cat-friendly but keep in mind their size when pairing them with big dogs.  Rough play of any kind may injury these petite dogs.  This hybrid has high energy and requires daily exercise but given its size and potential for a breathing problem, doesn't require high-intensity activity.  The intelligence of both breeds makes the Bolo-Tzu easy to train but you may have a difficult time house training this hybrid as both parent breeds can be difficult to house break.

Bolo-Tzu Activity Requirements

The Bolo-Tzu is a mix of two high energy breeds and needs a fair amount of daily exercise given its toy size.  However, the intensity of exercise doesn’t have to be great.  You can break up exercise time to a few 30 minutes session and a light walk or floor games.  Your BOlo-Tzu will follow you around the house and want to be a part of your daily life.  The frequent walking around to keep up with you is an excellent way for this mix to get exercise while indoors. The Bolo-Tzu can get plenty of physical exercise indoors and is an excellent choice for apartment and urban living.  This hybrid may not tolerate cold weather well, and winter sweaters may be necessary if you plan on going outside in the cold.  However, this breed lives mostly indoor and with climate control, is very comfortable.
