Rambunctious, energetic, and lively, the Border Beagle is a hybrid breed that originated in the United States but the exact date is not clear. The breed was conceived from the mix of the Border Collie and the Beagle. The Border Beagle comes in typical Beagle colors – tricolor, black and white, brown and white, red, red-brown, and golden. Its coat can vary depending on which parent breed is dominant; it can be short and rough or long and silky. This active dog is may become a frequent barker if it is not trained properly. Its purpose is to provide companionship and be of use with its nose. This playful canine enjoys being able to exercise daily and makes for a great companion.

Border Beagle Breed History

The Border Beagle originated in the United States but the exact year is unknown. The Border Beagle is relatively healthier than its parent breeds – the Border Collie and the Beagle. The Border Collie has been said to be found in wood carvings dating back to Thomas Beckwith's work prior to 1800. While there were a variety of sheepdogs dating back to the 1800s, there were also various herding styles that were discovered within the dogs. In 1860, the Birmingham Dog Society held classes for the Scotch Sheep Dogs. In 1906, the Border Collie's first standard was developed with a strong emphasis on its working ability. In 1915, the breed was recorded with the name “Border Collie” – named after its origin between the Scottish and English border. In 1995, this dedicated canine was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Border Beagle's other parent, the Beagle, originated from pack hounds dating back to England. The word “beagle”, meaning “open throat”, was derived from the French language and referred to the breed's distinctive bay. The Beagle was a favorable breed to use with hunters due to its outstanding nose in the field. With incredible nose-scent talent, this breed was considered one of the best at the time. In 1642, the Beagle was first mentioned in America and was discovered in the South pre-Civil War. In 1888, the National Beagle Club was formed. This floppy-eared canine was incredibly popular in the United States among families. The breed was eventually split into two categories: under 13 inches and 13-15 inches. 

Border Beagle Breed Appearance

The Border Beagle varies in appearance and can either take on more dominant traits from the Border Collie or the Beagle. The breed comes in a variety of color combinations such as black and white, brown and white, tan, red-brown, and golden. The color combinations are usually supplemented with the color white in the mix and may even result in tri-colored palettes. Its coat may take on a more harsh and rough side or a shiny and short gene. The Border Beagle's coat will likely be water-repellent regardless of which coat it inherits. This expressive breed is a medium-sized dog with a stout body and straight, sturdy legs. With large, dark, and round eyes, the expression is that of a playful and intelligent dog. Border Beagle Breed Maintenance

With a coat that can vary between long and silky or short and harsh, the Border Beagle is not considered to be a hypoallergenic breed. Shedding is imminent but will usually only occur during shedding season. A shorter coat means a rubber curry brush can be used to eliminate any dead hairs. A longer coat means it's time to bring out the bristle brush and ensure maintenance is kept up. Daily brushing will cut down on the shedding and will also keep your floors clean. Its floppy ears requires weekly wiping and cleaning to prevent debris buildup. Nails should be trimmed every 2 to 3 weeks. Teeth should be brushed weekly to avoid tartar buildup.

Border Beagle Temperament

The Border Beagle is described as a lovable, energetic, affectionate dog with much to offer its family. The breed is considered an excellent choice for new owners due to its ability to warm up to them. With strangers, this easy-going canine may require early training in order to fully accept them. The Border Beagle is a friendly breed towards children but may be timid towards other animals initially. Its loyal disposition means it would protect your family. This breed will crave your attention and will want to see you laugh and smile. The Border Beagle is an excellent companion who simply wants to be able to entertain its family for hours on end. Its Border Collie side will work to guard you against intruders at all times. Whether your dog will be easy to train will depend on which dominant traits it inherits. Generally speaking, your Border Beagle will likely be as stubborn as a Beagle but eager to learn. It is essential to provide early training in order to prevent property destruction behaviors.

Border Beagle Activity Requirements

The Border Beagle will wear you down if you do not provide it with enough exercise daily. Its high activity levels means it is always on the go. Several walks per day will provide sufficient exercise as long as it is accompanied by intense play. An apartment with no run room will create a dog with undesirable behaviors. It is highly recommended to provide this breed with a spacious yard to run free to enjoy the fresh air and stimulate its mind. The Border Beagle thrives in a warm climate and can live in either an average size home in an urban environment or a farm in a rural location.

We got Alistair as a 6-month-old puppy only took a week to be potty trained! he is very loyal to his mom and I to the point you could leave every door in the house open and never worry about him running off. He knows many tricks and commands and enjoys making his parents proud. He is the best watch dog any noise that is of concern he lets his owners know immediately. Only downside to him he takes some time to get to know other dogs but never attacks! He is my first dog and would recommend to any first-time dog owner to get this breed because he will love you for life.

Scout is very very sweet. He is incredibly affectionate and loves all people and kids. He likes other dogs and loves to play but can get a bit territorial over his toys. He needs a lot activity he is constantly on the go. We take him hiking and swimming and after 2 hours he will still have energy. They can be a bit stubborn too. We have two beagle mixes and they like to do what they want to do when they want to do it, so training has to be very very consistent. It took about 8 months to get him fully potty trained. Potty trained the same way as multiple dogs I had before and he just wasn’t getting it so it’s smart to keep them on a routine because they get very distracted easily. He also has a howl, like a beagle, it is cute but very loud. He topped out at about 50 lbs. was 14 when we got him at 10 weeks. He is the sweetest dog though, always wants to lay with us, cuddle, he’s 50 lbs but climbs into our arms and kisses

We rehomed our Border Beagle last Autumn and she quickly fitted in to our family with 2 children and 2 cats. She loves her walks and we walk several miles a day, she enjoys playing tug with her ragger toys and is very good company. She barks when she's excited, but quietens down when asked. She can run off when first let off the lead, but always returns, she's learning new commands and is very affectionate

It took about a year to get him completely potty trained and he is extremely hyper. He just turned 2 years old and has improved dramatically since when I first got him (I could never leave the house without putting him in his crate because he destroyed and chewed on EVERYTHING) A year later and he still likes to chew on things however if he has enough chewing bones and toys, he will not destroy furniture. He sheds a lot even though his hair does not seem that long. He is affectionate and friendly however he does have his grumpy days. He is a good watch dog because anytime someone knocks on the door or he hears a loud car outside he barks (and its not just a bark its a beagle howl).

We adopted Muriel at 6 months old. We thought she was a beagle mixed with German Shorthair Pointer. We did a dna test and found out she is half beagle and border collie and Australian cattle dog mix. She’s the best dog ever. So sweet and very smart and well behaved. She is prone to pancreatitis.

Training him was super easy. He has some skin issues (dryness and possible sebaceous adenitis). Harder to train him to be called off wildlife (hence the recent skunk spraying) but he is the most lovable affectionate and smart dog i’ve ever met. Although he loves everyone he clings to me (whether it’s bonding or if he sees me as the true alpha). I highly recommend this breed!

Daisy is the best companion I ever could've imagined. Smart as a whip, loyal, super affectionate with her people, and loving to dogs she knows. She is timid around new animals and will bark if they go past, but has never been aggressive to a person or animal that she has been introduced to. She loves babies and small children, and she loves cats and deer. She is tremendously expressive with her face.

She’s the best buddy I’ve ever had. We bonded from first sight. We are attached at the hip. Very intelligent. Knows at least25 of her toys by name. She also knows a little sign language.

Willow is what I call a dog's dog. She loves people, kids, and other animals and would never hurt a fly. She is the most affectionate creature I have ever met. Only complaint is what I call her "beagle stink," important to give her a bath about once a week or more. I cannot tell if she is smart or not because she knows how to get around town herself but I also walked in on her trying to eat a lightbulb.

I love my border beagle, she is very high energy so we hit the dog park everyday to visit her friends and let out her energy. She insists on having the car window down at all times and if not, she cries or will open it herself. (Yes she learned how to open the window) she is incredibly smart and caught on really quick to tricks but she can be very stubborn like the beagles. Loves our cat, babies, kids and is extremely friendly and happy.

We adopted the 2 females from the litter. Their temperaments are different but they do everything together! Zoe likes to play fetch but only w a stick into a lake or ocean. Macey will swim if she has to. Zoe tends to keep watch with her eyes and ears at home or in the car and uses short sharp barks to communicate. Macey is not always vigilant like Zoe but is very protective especially of the kids. She physically puts herself between the child and person/dog and growls. Actually she protects Zoe her sis like that too! Macey bays like a beagle and Zoe does not. Macey is a cuddler and Zoe is not. But Zoe follows me around and stays at my heels, most notably in the bathroom! They both were easy to train in puppy school and both are very attentive and responsive to people. They are definitely showing some age now, stiffness and tire more easily on walks. But they still run, play and chase bunnies when they’re hiking off leash. And wrestle w each other like they’ve done since they were pups. Awesome dogs. Didn’t know they were a breed intentionally mixed! We got them at a rescue.

Max is the smartest dog ever. He is a border beagle. He can learn anything as long as you give him a treat when he does it correctly! Love him so much.
