The parent breeds (Border Collie and Lakeland Terrier) are of medium and small size respectively, with the Border Collie contributing higher energy levels and herding skills to the mix. Both parent breeds originated in England and the hilly borders between England and Scotland from various shepherding breeds with the intention of their being hunters and herders for the farmers in those areas. Both parent breeds have moderate length coats which require moderate amounts of maintenance. Both parent breeds are intelligent and have varying degrees of energy levels with the Border Collie parent contributing loyalty, alertness, protectiveness, responsiveness with the Lakeland Terrier parent contributing aggression and independence to the gene pool.

Border Collie Lakeland Breed History

The Border Collie Lakeland hybrid is fairly new and there is little history available about it. However, there is history available on both of the parent breeds, the Border Collie and the Lakeland Terrier. Both parent breeds were developed in the British Isles and both were developed for purposes of hunting and herding tasks for the farmers in their respective areas. The history of the Border Collie may go back to the first century and may involve the Roman invasions of Britain, bringing with them their own larger Roman breeds which, after the collapse of the Roman Empire, Vikings are thought to have brought smaller spitz-like breeds which they crossbred to obtain a smaller, more agile breed of shepherding canine, more suited to the terrain in the area. This crossbreeding resulted in a canine breed which is among the most intelligent of canine breeds and is also one of the most active and energetic breeds, tackling those shepherding tasks with ease and confidence. The Lakeland Terrier, a breed also developed in the British Isles in the 1800’s, and though there is some contention among breeders and fanciers, it is possible that the Lakeland Terrier may be a mix of the Bedlington, the Welsh Terrier, Border Terrier, Dandie Dinmont and the wire-haired Fox Terrier. This combination of breeding, has, over the years, resulted in a canine breed which resembles the Airedale Terrier. This versatile breed was developed to help control the fox population, as well as otters, badgers and other vermin, which were found to be raiding the various livestock areas and generally disrupting the farms.

Border Collie Lakeland Breed Appearance

The Border Collie Lakeland is a hybrid mix of the Border Collie and the Lakeland Terrier and, as such, can have any combination of the characteristics from both breed parents. The body could be medium or small, well-proportioned and muscled. The eyes could be any color, oval in shape, small to moderate in size with an expression of alertness, intelligence, full of interest, or even impish. The ears could be small or medium sized, held erect or semi-erect or with a fold with the inner edge being held close to the head. The muzzle could be long and strong with a well-defined stop and open well-developed nostrils. The jaws will likely be strong and well-developed with even teeth, meeting in a scissors or slightly overlapping scissors bite. The feet could be compact and oval in shape with deep strong pads and moderately arched toes with strong moderate length nails or the feet could be round, point forward with toes that are compact and strong, with pads that are thick and either black or dark gray with strong dark nails. The tail could be carried low or set high on the back. The coat could be straight or slightly wavy, with a coarse texture overcoat and soft, short and dense undercoat or could have a double, hard, wiry overcoat with a short and soft undercoat. The color of your Border Collie Lakeland could be virtually any color or combination of colors and any combination of markings. Colors might include black, brown, blue, red, liver or wheaten.

Border Collie Lakeland Breed Maintenance

The Border Collie Lakeland hybrid will require moderate maintenance; thorough brushings will likely be required two to three times a week due to the high levels of shedding contributed by the Border Collie breed parent while the Lakeland Terrier breed parent contributes coat characteristics which require stripping several times a year to control the shedding, in addition to once a week brushings. Some trimming is needed for the Border Collie coat. Shampooing needs only be done when it is necessary. Regular and routine eye checkups and ear examinations and cleaning will keep those areas healthy. Almost every canine breed or hybrid needs regular and routine teeth examinations and cleaning to avoid periodontal disease and tooth loss. You may need to trim the facial hair if your pet has more of the Lakeland characteristics, while those with the Border Collie coat characteristics will need trimmed overall regularly since their hair is longer.

Border Collie Lakeland Temperament

Your Border Collie Lakeland can take on the temperament characteristics of either or both breed parents and could be alert, energetic, intelligent, loyal, protective, responsive, aggressive and independent. Your pet will likely be relatively friendly with strangers, will be quite affectionate with family and get along great with kids, though they should be supervised with small children as they can be pretty energetic when they play. They may tolerate and get along well with other dogs in the household if they were socialized with other animals early in life. They may or may not get along with cats, however. Your Border Collie Lakeland is an intelligent animal but that doesn’t always correlate to being easy to train. The Border Collie parent is quite easy to train because the breed always needs to be mentally and physically challenged. The Lakeland Terrier parent, on the other hand, is a bit more challenging to train, needing positive reinforcement and rewards to maintain to appropriate attitude toward the training. Both parent breeds are quite energetic and require lots of exercise, playtime and running free time.

Border Collie Lakeland Activity Requirements

The parent breeds of the Border Collie Lakeland both possess extremely high amounts of energy and require lots of varied activities to avoid mental and physical boredom. Neither of the parent breeds of this hybrid will fit into apartment life due to their energy levels and the activity levels required to keep them happy and healthy. Both the Border Collie and the Lakeland Terrier parent breeds are known to be destructive when left alone for long periods of time or when they aren’t getting sufficient varied types of exercise. They will thrive in homes which have large fenced in backyards with families who will interact with them on a regular basis and who have the time to walk them several times a day, let them run free in the backyard or at a pet park and who will play fetch and frisbee with them regularly. They can tolerate all climates and can live in rural as well as urban communities provided them are able to get the mental and physical stimulation and challenges which they need.
