Italian Greyhound

The Boston Iggy is a hybrid dog conceived from mixing a Boston Terrier with an Italian Greyhound. Little is known about when the hybrid breed began, and it is a rare breed without much data to go on. Both the Boston Terrier and the Italian Greyhound are small dogs, so it is safe to say that the Boston Iggy continues in this size. The body is a combination of both parent dogs, giving an athletic appearance to the body and slightly longer legs than the Boston Terrier. With short fine glossy hair that comes in a wide range of colours, including gray, slate gray, red, fawn, blue, black and white. The Boston Iggy can be white with color markings or color with white markings. As both the Boston Terrier and the Italian Greyhound are sensitive to the tone of voice, it is safe to say that the Boston Iggy will be sensitive in nature, happy to please, and slightly submissive. This dog responds well to a gentle but firm pack leader, who allows them to develop their personality but maintains control. They make for great companion dogs who are devoted and loyal.

Boston Iggy Breed History

The Boston Iggy information is sparse but they are a perfect balance between the Italian Greyhound and the Boston Terrier. Although it is a rare breed, it is set to become popular with owners who are living in apartments or smaller housing units. While their history is vague, we can look to the parent dogs for an indication of what the Boston Iggy has inherited. Boston Terriers were bred down from the pit-fighting bull and terrier type dogs. They originated in Boston, Massachusetts and were a cross between the English Bulldog and the now extinct English White Terrier which began around 1865. After several offspring interbreeding’s the breed become popular in Boston in 1889. It was recognised by the American Kennel Club in 1893. Terrier only in name, the Boston Terrier is far removed from the pit fighting dogs of the past. The Italian Greyhound is a rather ancient breed, with 6000-year-old Egyptian tombs depicting dogs like the Italian Greyhound. They are also honoured on decorative Mediterranean art of 2000 years ago. These dogs, with their fine noble looks, became popular with noblemen during the Renaissance. A small Greyhound type of dog was found in the city of Pompeii after the horrific lava flows ruined and partially buried the Roman city near modern Naples. During the 16 Century, the Italian Greyhound ancestors were brought to Europe by the Phoenician civilization where it became popular with the European nobility. Catherine the Great of Russia and Queen Victoria both owned Italian Greyhounds. Frederick the Great of Prussia took one of these little dogs to war with him, and he buried the dog himself when it died at Sans Souci. Fredericks family fulfilled his wish to be buried with his little Italian Greyhound. Even into the 19th Century, this little dog continued to win hearts, as demonstrated when an African chieftain liked the dogs so much he offered 200 cattle in exchange for a single Italian Greyhound. This breed was recognised by the AKC in 1886.

Boston Iggy Breed Appearance

The Boston Iggy is a small dog combining the muscular build of the Boston Terrier with the elegance and athleticism of the Italian Greyhound. The head is more refined and has a narrow-pointed muzzle (unless the parentage is high in proportion favouring the Boston Terrier where it may be much shorter).  The Boston Iggy has a well-proportioned body in relation to his head, and a well-developed deep chest. The eyes on the Boston Iggy are wideset, round and very expressive. The nose is black with the teeth meeting in an even bite or in a scissors bite depending on their inherited genes. The ears sit erect on the head, with the top slightly flopping over. The front legs are straight and longer than the Boston Terriers. Combining the coats from both parents, they Boston Iggy has a silky, short fine textured coat that comes in a wide variety of colors.

Boston Iggy Breed Maintenance

The Boston Iggy is an easy dog to groom. The fine silky coat just needs a regular brushing and a wipe down with a piece of chamois or towelling. If you are bathing this dog, do so only when necessary, ensuring you use a special sensitive dog shampoo. Dry your Boston Iggy off afterwards and check in the ears to ensure they are in good health. If you get your dog used to having his teeth brushed when he is young, it will be easy to ensure his teeth are healthy as he matures. Trim the toenails as required, a sure sign of long nails is when your dog ‘clicks’ across the floor. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself or have never done it before, get a professional dog groomer to show you how to do it safely.

Boston Iggy Temperament

Coming from parent lineage of dogs that are both sensitive to the tone of their master’s voice, the Boston Iggy continues in this line. They respond best to gentle but firm leadership. The Boston Iggy is a playful, keen, affectionate dog who is intelligent and kind-mannered. Slightly submissive from the Italian Greyhound side, it wants nothing better than to please its owner. However, it will not respond well to harsh discipline and may become difficult to control. While your Boston Iggy may be slightly high strung, they are not as fragile as they may appear. Do not over protect these dogs or they may become snappish if frightened, and remain consistent with your demands and during training and you will have a dog that will follow you everywhere and be a devoted friend. Socialised well when young, and given adequate exercise, this little dog can excel in social settings. Generally, the Boston Iggy is a peaceful dog. It gets along well with children and other animals as long as it has a strong leader and is not stressed.

Boston Iggy Activity Requirements

The Boston Iggy dog is always active, even inside. It likes to be part of everything and loves games. Be careful when it is a puppy as they can get hurt during play due to their fine bones from the Italian Greyhound parent. They are sensitive to changes in climate temperatures, extremes can affect them. The Boston Iggy is a good dog for apartments, as long as they get a chance to walk daily or play in the dog park. They are keen to please, and will curl up beside you if nothing is happening, and be just as content.

We adopted her at 4 years old, and had a DNA test done. She is 50/50 Boston/Iggy. She had no training but is intelligent and eager to please, and learned everything we taught her. She is confident, friendly and happy. She has some separation anxiety and car anxiety, but we manage it easily. She has very soft fur, buries herself in blankets, loves everyone she meets, and is very popular everywhere she goes.
