Braque Francais Gascogne

The Braque Francais Gascogne is a hunting dog that came from the southern area of France. While the record books are not clear of their exact lineage, their ancestors probably included the Old Spanish Pointer and the now extinct Southern Hound. Although well known in France and appreciated as a hunting dog of merit, the Braque Francais Gascogne is not well known in other countries. While they are an excellent hunter, they have always had to compete against other Pointer type dogs that were better known. Rated as a medium to large dog, you would find it hard to find a more mellow, gentle dog who loves people and adores pleasing them. If they are engaged in hunting, they hunt for the master, not themselves. These dogs will retrieve the birds willingly and from all types of terrain or waterways. By the 19th century, a search was made to find the original dog as dogs had been taken from other countries and crossbred with other breeds. What they found after their search, was two distinct separate regional varieties. The Braque Francais Gascogne was one type, the other was the Braque Francais Pyrenean which is smaller than the Gascogne. To date, the two breeds are accepted by the French Kennel Club, Canadian Kennel Club, and the United Kennel Club. Many hunting clubs and minor registries also recognize these amazing dogs. The Braque Francais Gascogne has changed from their early history where only wealthy landowners would own such a large dog. They are now recognised as a wonderful dog for an active family.
