The Buggs, or Pugin, is a mix between the Boston Terrier and the Pug. While this is a relatively new hybrid breed, it isn’t difficult to see why so many people are fulling in love with this little dog. A complete cuddle bug with a heart of gold, the Buggs takes on amazing traits from both the Pug and the Boston Terrier. Small in stature but big in love, the Buggs is a little dog that only gets up to around 25 pounds full grown. This makes them an excellent choice for a lap dog and companion; not to mention their easily manageable size and gentle, playful personality make them perfect to have around children! Perhaps the only negative aspects of this breed lie in the Boston Terrier’s territorial streak. If this issue goes unchecked, the Buggs may not let anyone else near their beloved master, which can be a problem. However, with early socialization and training, this tendency can be curbed and you will have a loving, gentle, good-natured Buggs that will be a wonderful companion for any home.

Buggs Breed History

Because the Buggs is a hybrid breed that hasn’t been around for too long, there aren’t many details pertaining to his origin. Despite the lack of details, we can still get a good idea of what kind of dog the Buggs is based on the origin stories of his parent breeds; the Pug and the Boston Terrier. The first breed on the list, the Boston Terrier, is fondly known as the American Gentleman due to his friendly and jovial personality. He is believed to be a mix between the Bulldog and the White English Terrier, which explains the breed’s coloring and small body type. The Boston Terriers were once known as the Bull Terrier, but eventually took the name “Boston Terrier” in 1889. Originating in the United States, the Boston Terrier was bred to be a best friend and has a happy-go-lucky personality. The second breed is one that everyone knows and loves' the Pug. This fun-loving little dog originated in China and was brought over to Holland by Portuguese traders in the 16th century. This breed eventually became very popular in royal courts and was favored by English royalty when Dutch traders brought Pugs into the country around the year 1689. It took quite some time for the American Kennel Club to recognize the Pug as a breed, however they eventually got around to it in the year 1889 and the Pug has grown in popularity ever since; most likely due to its small size and super loving personality. By combining these two breeds you end up with a companion dog that loves to cuddle but still has enough energy to keep him from blending into the background of your home.

Buggs Breed Appearance

The Buggs is a relatively low maintenance dog that is small in stature but big at heart. The typical body type for this breed mimics that of the Pug, with a short body that sports a fine coat which can come in shades of brown, black, or white. The dark face, curled tail, and floppy ears are most recognizable from the Pug and are meshed together quite well with the large bulging eyes that is found in both breeds. This appearance is playful, adorable, and slightly goofy which will bring a joy to your home. The Buggs is a very even blend of both parent breeds as the Pug and Boston Terrier are quite similar in a lot of ways. This breed will do best in moderate to warm temperatures as their short fur is not made for cold weather; shedding happens minimally.

Buggs Breed Maintenance

The Buggs is a very easy dog to keep groomed. Due to the fact that the Pug sheds seasonally and the Boston Terrier sheds hardly at all, the Buggs will be a very low shedder; meaning that while he isn’t entirely hypoallergenic, he is a great choice of dog for those who have mild allergies and can tolerate just a little bit of shedding. Brushing your Buggs at least once a week will be plenty to ensure that the shedding is kept to a minimum, the fur stays healthy, and any dirt or loose hair is removed. Because this breed does not have a bad doggy odor, bathing only needs to occur maybe once a month, or when your dog gets especially dirty. Besides basic grooming and bathing, be sure to clip your Buggs nails every few weeks in order to keep his feet healthy and snag free.

Buggs Temperament

Because the Buggs is a combination of two dog breeds, he is going to be a blend of multiple personality traits. Thankfully, the Pug and the Boston Terrier have very mild and sweet dispositions that make them extremely loveable and a great companion dog. The Buggs takes after the clownish personality of the Boston Terrier as well as the energetic yet cuddly side of the Pug. While this hybrid breed will be easy to train thanks to this fun-loving personality, there may be some difficulty with territorial behavior and barking. These issues can get out of hand if unaddressed, however, with early training and socialization your Buggs can overcome these traits and be an awesome companion and friend. This breed does great with kids, other pets, and can live in any size of home without issue.

Buggs Activity Requirements

While neither the Pug or the Boston Terrier are overly active dogs (and by no means a sporting breed), your Buggs will still require some exercise each day to keep him active and healthy. Simple activities such as a walk, visit to the park, or playing fetch in the yard is plenty active enough to keep your Buggs in good shape. This is a very cuddly hybrid breed who will absolutely love to cuddle you all day long and take a few good naps throughout the day. If you are someone who can’t do a lot of physical activities or just want a more relaxed pet experience, the Buggs may be the perfect dog for you. Just keep in mind that exercise is vital to ensuring that your dog stays fit and happy; even if it just for a few minutes a day. The Buggs is an easy dog to keep anywhere, whether country or the city, and although he does bark often it shouldn’t be loud enough to disturb the neighbors. Warmer climates are a favorite for this little dog.

Most lovable dog ever. Looks more like a pug than most buggs because of her squished face, but is literally a member of the family. Likes to be dressed and sleeps a whole lot.

This is our first Bugg and he is larger and far more active than what you describe here. He is the most hyper dog I have ever owned. But at the same time he is absolutely adorable and extremely loving! He is smart, but stubborn! He learns quickly, but likes to do what he likes to do even when he knows he shouldn't do it!

He is very intelligent, friendly and unshy with strangers and dogs (almost to the point his friendliness is taken as aggressiveness or misinterpreted). He has no fear, especially not with cars so we must be careful around those. He does great at dog parks with dogs of any size, and he has endless energy. He must be taken for at least one fourty+ minute walk/run a day or he becomes very naughty. We have to keep our trash can up high in the restroom and our shoes away from him or they will inevitably get destroyed with in a few minutes. Toilet paper/feminine products/shoes/headphones must all be kept very high or he gets to them! Potty training him was much more difficult than my other dogs, but with good enoigh treats we can get him to do anything - he is very food driven. He is very very cuddly and enjoys being a lap dog and giving kisses when he isn't being playful. He is very stubborn but also very smart and loving. He requires lots of attention, but is a great companion.
