The Bull Chow will be a large canine, weighing between 55 and 70 pounds. Both parent breeds are independent, stubborn and territorial.  They are also loyal and protective of their owners. His unusual look makes him a very special dog that will be sure to turn heads. A dog that will do well in most environments, the Bull Chow parent does need to be aware of his limitations in hot temperatures.

Bull Chow Terrier Breed History

During the 19th century there were many breeds being developed to hunt rats,  and for blood sports such as bull-baiting and dogfighting. It is thought that the Bull Terrier was the result of crossing the Old English Bulldog with the Old English Terrier. Both the English Bulldog and the Old English Terriers are now extinct. During this time, there were no breed standards. Selective breeding was more about the dog’s performance and not his appearance. The Bull Terrier mix was eventually divided into the descendants of the Bull Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. During the 1850s and 1860s the cross breeding began to focus on the breed’s appearance. The Bull Terrier was developed into a white dog with an egg-shaped head. They were bred to be tough, athletic and a loyal companion.  He was nicknamed “The White Cavalier”. The Bull Terrier Club of America was formed in 1897. The Bull Terrier has been seen in movies such as: The Great Gatsby, Oliver Twist, Patton, The Incredible Journey, Frankenweenie, and Toy Story.  From 1987 to 1989, Budweiser beer commercials featured a female Bull Terrier named "Spuds MacKenzie". A Bull Terrier has even lived in the White House during President Teddy Roosevelt’s term. The Chow Chow is believed to be an ancient breed that originated in Siberia or Mongolia 8,300 years ago.  They were used as temple guards in China, Mongolia and Tibet.  The Chow Chow were even used as models for the stone lion statues in Buddhist temples. This dog was bred for guarding, hunting, herding and pulling. Unfortunately, the Chow Chow was also used for human consumption in China and their fur was used for clothing. Some historians believe that the Chow Chow were war dogs during the 13th century and accompanied the Mongolian armies as they invaded China and Europe. The Chow was first exhibited in the United States in 1890.  It placed third in the Miscellaneous class at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Chow Chow breed in 1903. Sigmund Freud had a Chow Chow named Jo-Fi, which he would include in his therapy sessions. He believed that dogs could determine a person’s true character. So, Jo-fi would help “assess” his patients. Chows have been loving companions to Martha Stewart, President Calvin Coolidge, Elvis Presley and Janet Jackson.

Bull Chow Terrier Breed Appearance

The exact appearance of the Bull Chow is hard to determine.  He will definitely be a large, strong and muscular dog.  His coat is dense and may be short or medium in length.  The head of this athletic canine will be broad with a medium sized muzzle. The Bull Chow will have a powerful jaw and his ears may be dropped or erect.  The tongue of the rugged Bull Chow may be blue like the distinctive tongue of the Chow Chow. The eyes of this powerful hybrid will be dark, as will his nose. The Bull Chow will have the appearance of confidence and determination.

Bull Chow Terrier Breed Maintenance

The Bull Chow will have a dense and possibly, a double coat. His coat will need to be brushed out weekly to help remove dead hair. A slicker brush will glide over the fur easily, gathering the loose fur. His teeth should be brushed a couple of times a week; if you start this practise when your hybrid is a pup, the stubbornness that he may have should not carry over to the grooming routine. He may even grow to like the attention. Getting your Bull Chow used to having his feet touched is important as the nails of your hybrid may be a challenge to cut due to the strength of the nail. Important to note is that the Bull Chow could have wrinkles and folds in his skin that will need to be attended to daily. If moisture is allowed to accumulate in the folds, yeast and bacteria can grow, leading to an infection.

Bull Chow Terrier Temperament

The Bull Chow will have a mixture of both his parent’s temperament. The Bull Terrier has an even temperament but can be a stubborn and independent breed. He can be territorial and protective.  Early socialization with other dogs, strangers and children is important. The Bull Terrier is an active breed. They can make a loving and fun companion. The Bull Terrier is not recommended for a first-time dog owner. The Chow Chow can be a protective, territorial and aggressive canine. They are not recommended for an inexperienced dog owner or a home with small children. Early socialization and consistent obedience training is necessary.  Chow Chows are independent, intelligent and have a stubborn side. Chow Chows develop strong bonds with their owners. Establish yourself early in ownership as the pack leader. The Bull Chow will thrive in a household where he knows his place, allowing him to grow in confidence. Clear instructions in his life will make him a happier family member.

Bull Chow Terrier Activity Requirements

The Chow Chow is a moderate energy dog but the Bull Terrier is a high energy dog. Your Bull Chow will need a daily expenditure of energy that involves long brisk walks and games like fetch. If your Bull Chow gets along well with other dogs, you could give him a chance at flyball or agility. He may like the combination of structure and fun. Because the Bull Chow may show aggression toward other dogs or strangers, he should not be walked off leash. Your Bull Chow will also enjoy playing and exploring in a fenced in yard but be sure to supervise him at all times.
