The Bull Daniff is a designer breed composed of two purebreds, the Bullmastiff and the Great Dane.  The Bull Daniff will be a large to giant dog. His coat will be short and shedding will be moderate. Brushing can be done weekly to remove dead hair and to keep his coat shiny. He will be of moderate energy level but due to his size and stature he will need to get out and about more than once on a daily basis. The Bull Daniff is a loving and loyal companion most suited to a large home with a secure outdoor space for him to stretch his legs. Owners of the hybrid say he is gentle, but needs a firm consistent handler for him to be at his best.

Bull Daniff Breed History

The Bull Daniff is a new breed with very little detailed history.  It is believed that this designer breed originated in the United States and was recognized by the International Designer Canine Registry in 2009. Both the Bullmastiff and the Great Dane can be traced back to ancient times.  The Bullmastiff is a working breed, originating in Britain in the 1800s. Gamekeepers bred the Mastiff and the Bulldog to help them ward off poachers. A gamekeeper’s job is to take care of the wild animals and birds that lived on the estate, which were kept for hunting. The Bullmastiff is known as the “Gamekeeper’s Night Dog”.  The Bullmastiff was fast, large and strong and would run down and detain a poacher until the gamekeeper arrived.  The Bullmastiff were imported into the United States in the 1920s by oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller. The dogs were used to guard his country estate. Sylvester Stallone used his beloved Bullmastiff, Butkus in the Rocky movie.  Other celebrities that have owned Bullmastiff include Bob Dylan, Jon Bon Jovi, Christina Aguilera and Marlon Brando. The Bullmastiff has a genetic background of approximately 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. The American Kennel Club recognized the Bullmastiff in 1934. There are Egyptian artifacts depicting drawings of large dogs resembling the Great Dane dating back to 3000 B.C. There are also Chinese writings describing the Great Dane in 1121 B.C. It is believed that Assyrians traded the breed to the Greeks and Romans.  These dogs were then probably bred with the English Mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound. In the 16th century, the Great Dane was bred in Germany to hunt wild boars and were called “Boar Hounds”. They were also owned by the German nobles as guard dogs and companions. The Great Dane became the National dog of Germany in 1876. Great Danes came to the United States starting in the mid-1800s. The American Kennel Club recognized the Great Dane in 1887. During World War II, a bomb was dropped through the roof of a British home.  Inside was a Great Dane by the name of Juliana.  Juliana proceeded to urinate on the bomb, which diffused the bomb.  She was awarded a Blue Cross medal for her “brave” actions. Juliana was awarded her second medal for alerting her owners that there was a fire in their shoe shop. There are three beloved Great Dane cartoon dogs Scooby Doo, Marmaduke and Astro Jetson. Great Danes have made it into many celebrities’ homes such as Marilyn Monroe, Greg Louganis, Cameron Diaz, Adam West and Jayne Mansfield.

Bull Daniff Breed Appearance

The Bull Daniff will have a mix of physical traits of both the Bullmastiff and the Great Dane. Some Bull Daniffs may inherit more of the Bullmastiff traits while others will take on more of the Great Dane characteristics. Many Bull Daniff hybrids will look like a rounder and heavier Great Dane. They have a muscular and strong build.  Typically, the Bull Daniff has a large head with floppy ears. Their facial expression is noble and loving. The breed has deep large jowls and can drool. Some of the most common colors for the Bull Daniff are black & white, light brown, gray, gold, and tan. They may also have brindle, merle or spotted coats.

Bull Daniff Breed Maintenance

The Bull Daniff has a short coat that requires little maintenance. Weekly brushing can help remove dead hair. Folds on his skin should be cleaned and kept dry to prevent the development of a bacterial or yeast infection on the skin.  After he walks in the rain or is given a bath, he must be thoroughly and gently dried off.  His ears should be checked weekly and cleaned with an ear wash if dirt and debris are present.  To prevent tartar and gingivitis, his teeth should be brushed with a canine toothpaste several times a week. His nails may need to be trimmed monthly.  It is recommended that his nails be trimmed often as a puppy, so that he gets used to the practice. His sheer size may make the grooming routine a chore rather than a bonding time; this is why consistency with grooming needs is a must.

Bull Daniff Temperament

The Bull Daniff will have the behavior and personality traits of both his parents. Even among the same litter mates you may notice different temperaments. In general though, this hybrid is highly intelligent, confident and faithful.  It is important that your Bull Daniff puppy is socialized at an early age. The Bull Daniff can be suspicious of strangers but rarely aggressive. Both the Bullmastiff and Great Dane traits will make him protective and a great watchdog. Although they are very large, they are gentle, easy going and loving dogs. The Bull Daniff loves children.  Due to their size, they must be supervised when playing with small children. If exposed to animals at a young age, the Bull Daniff will be loving and protective to other pets in the home. Because of his willingness to please his owner training is not difficult. He may suffer from separation anxiety if left for long periods of time.

Bull Daniff Activity Requirements

Your Bull Daniff will enjoy long daily walks; they are a must for a dog of his size.  He will also like playing fetch and running in a fenced in yard.  Additionally, your Bull Daniff may appreciate visiting a dog park and it is good to get him used to meeting new faces. Positive experiences with others will allow him to grow in confidence. Play should be limited during high temperatures. His energy levels will be higher when he is a puppy but because he is a large breed and growing fast it is important for him not to overdo activities that may put stress on the bones and joints.

I got Teddy when he was 6 months old and he had been abused and starved. Presumably the abuse Must have been by a tall loud man, because he is very skittish of men, particularly big men with low loud voices. He is the sweetest most gentle giant, unless he is scared, then he appears to become aggressive but is actually just timid. I love him more than anything!

He is a rescue, he was abandoned on our cottage road in the middle of winter. He was fortunate and we were lucky to have found him. Long story short he is now one of the family. He is loving and happy dog and loved by everyone who meets him.
