The Bullboxer Pit, also commonly known as the American Bullboxer, is a popular mixed breed. It is a hybrid of the Boxer and the American Pit Bull Terrier, two powerful dogs that were once bred as bull and bear baiting dogs. These dogs can make excellent family companions but training and socialization should starts as soon as possible with these dogs to encourage the development of a calm and confident disposition, and training should continue throughout the dog’s lifetime for the best overall results. Their short, smooth coats are fairly easy to groom; however, they do shed year round and they have a tendency to drool fairly heavily.
The Boxer breed was developed in Germany in the 1800’s from Bulldogs imported from England crossed with a type of dog known as a German Bullenbeisser, a now extinct Molosser dog that was known for its strength and agility. In 1895 the breed was stabilized by three Germans, Friedrich Robert, Elard Konig, and R. Hopner, and was first registered by the American Kennel Club in 1904. These courageous dogs were frequently employed to carry messages, supplies, and ammunition to soldiers in both World War I and II and soldiers returning from war often brought these friendly and clownish dogs home with them. The term Pit Bull can refer to several types of muscular, short-haired dog that were bred by incorporating Terrier into the Bulldog bloodline. They are known for their stamina, strength, and tenacity. Although these dogs were originally developed as dogs used in blood sports such as bull and bear baiting, they also performed very capably as farm dogs, catching and herding livestock, helping with the hunt, and acting as a family companion. This hybrid is being developed by utilizing contributions from the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) as it is recognized by the UKC of Britain, a sturdy breed with a strong sense of loyalty and a zest for life. The AKC in the United States does not recognize a breed by the name of Pit Bull, the American Staffordshire Terrier is similar enough that some dogs are registered as American Pit Bull Terriers in Europe and dually registered as American Staffordshire Terriers in America.
This hybrid is a well-muscled canine with a broad, flat head and a wide muzzle that can be either short or medium in length. Their brown eyes will be small to medium in size and may either be round or slightly almond shaped, and their ears will generally sit up high on the head and either fold over to the front or to the sides. Some owners may choose to crop the ears, at which point they will stand upright. Their normally long, tapered tail that curves at the end may be docked by some owners as well. They have a single layer glossy coat that lays flat against the body and has been seen in almost every color, except for any sort of merle. These canines also commonly have black or white markings that stand out against their base colors. Even with a longer snout, these dogs may have the undershot bite of the Boxer, making dental care particularly important.
These dogs are fairly easy to deal with in the grooming area, this hybrid’s short coat is easily manageable. Monthly baths are usually adequate for these dogs; however, they do require regular brushing with a curry comb or soft bristle brush several times a week to control the shedding. Medicated shampoo may be required if any skin disorders such as mange or allergies develop, and if your dog has inherited the facial folds and wrinkles of the Boxer, the face and muzzle area should be examined and wiped down on a weekly basis or more to prevent the formation of red yeast and other fungal or bacterial infestations, particularly as this hybrid has a tendency to drool rather heavily. The paw pads for these powerfully built animals also require special attention to prevent drying and cracking, including the use of a good dog-safe moisturizer. This should be started as early as possible to sensitize the animal as some Pit Bull variety breeds can be reluctant about having their feet touched.
The Bullboxer Pit is a crossbreed of two very athletic and active dogs, developed for their tenacity and gameness. In order to maintain their intensely muscular frames, this dog needs a great deal of exercise. This crossbreed should be offered at least two hours of vigorous activity per day, either through brisk walks or jogs, or through alternative activities, such as swimming, flyball, and agility training. This dog is not generally recommended for apartment buildings due to its large size and higher exercise needs. Many apartments may restrict this type of dog as well and homeowners insurance may require dog liability insurance.
