The name Bulkita is a combination of the names of the dog’s two parent breeds, the Bulldog and the Akita. The Bulldog of today is known to be a calm addition to the family. He now leads a much more pleasant life than his earlier beginnings. A courageous canine, he was at one time in history forced into the bull-baiting ring and the fighting pit. Once these activities were thankfully outlawed, the Bulldog was allowed to shine as a loving companion. He is currently the 4th most popular dog according to the American Kennel Club's register. The Bullkita’s other parent, the Akita, originated in Japan thousands of years ago. Originally hunters, they have a long history of being held in high regard, looked upon as spiritual symbols of health, protection, happiness, and longevity. In 1931, Akitas were designated as one of Japan’s national treasures. Helen Keller, who loved the breed, is credited with bringing the first Akita to North America. Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1972, the Akita ranks at #46 in popularity today and excels at therapy and in the show ring. The product of these two purebred dogs is relatively new, though a beloved breed by those who own it.
