The Bully-Tzu is a mixture of a Bulldog and a Shih Tzu. Because there is not much information about the Bully-Tzu, we must look to the parent breeds to understand what the Bully-Tzu hybrid breed is like. The Bulldog may be one of several breeds of working dogs which were used for many purposes from driving cattle to market to the now-extinct practice of bull-baiting. Today the Bulldog is a gentle, protective companion who would much rather sleep on the sofa beside a family member. The Shih Tzu hails from China. He is a dog that been a companion to noblemen for centuries. Your Bully-Tzu will be a gentle dog with an independent mind and perhaps a stubborn streak. Overall, if you are looking for a dog that loves to be with his human, the Bully-Tzu will be the dog for you. Be prepared to take him everywhere though, he can be prone to anxieties cause by separation and being alone.

Bully-Tzu Breed History

Thought to have been first developed in the 13th century, the tenacious Bulldog is one of several breeds of working dogs which were used for many purposes, including the now-extinct practice of bull-baiting. Today the Bulldog is much different than the aggressive tough canine of the baiting and fighting ring. Now a dog with limited stamina, he is a gentle, protective companion who would rather join you on the sofa than over exert himself. He is currently the 4th most popular dog for families according to the American Kennel Club. The Shih Tzu originated in Tibet and has roots in China, where he was once called the Lion Dog. Depicted in artwork of the 16th century, he was valued as a royal dog. At one time, the Chinese nobility refused to export the dog out of their country. In the 1930s though, the first pair was exported to England and from there made their way to the United States. In 1969 the Shih-Tzu joined the American Kennel Club in the Toy Group.

Bully-Tzu Breed Appearance

The Bully-Tzu is generally a medium-sized dog, usually around thirty pounds. He will have a curly tail and a face that is somewhat flat with upright ears. His head will be round with a round body and legs that are proportionate to his size. The coat will vary in length and color. Often the Bully-Tzu is brown, white, black, or tricolor. A few Bully-Tzu have beards on their chins. Brown eyes and a winning smile complete the look.

Bully-Tzu Breed Maintenance

The Bully-Tzu will likely have longer hair than his parent breed the Bulldog and it may be silky , so the Bully-Tzu will have fairly high demands when it comes to grooming. He may shed frequently; he will require daily brushing with a soft bristle brush. The Bully-Tzu is not recommended for people with allergies due to the potentially high amount of shedding. Bathe only when necessary. His ears will need weekly cleaning with a dog cleaning solution and a cotton ball. Make sure they are fully dried though, as yeast and bacteria can build up, causing redness and maybe even infection. You should brush your Bully-Tzu’s teeth at least three times a week; breeds with small, crowded teeth are prone to decay and periodontal disease.

The Bully-Tzu is alert and inquisitive. They are generally easy-going and happy dogs. They are kind and intelligent. With early socialization, the Bully-Tzu will do fairly well with both kids and other animals. The Bully-Tzu is a great family dog. He loves cuddling and is eager to please his family. The Bully-Tzu will need a family who will be home often as they do tend to suffer from separation anxiety. Training generally goes well but a kind, firm tone is needed when teaching commands and asking for recall.

Bully-Tzu Activity Requirements

The Bully-Tzu is more apt to take a nap that he is to participate in vigorous exercise, so one can correctly assume that the Bully-Tzu is a low-energy dog. He does, however, need some daily activity. A daily walk with you is sufficient exercise for the Bully-Tzu. One must make sure not to overexert the Bully-Tzu. Dogs with a brachycephalic facial structure have a difficult time breathing, and vigorous exercise can be more harmful to the Bully-Tzu than beneficial.
