The Bushland Terrier is a small dog that is a cross between a Cairn Terrier and a Scottish Terrier. This breed is about 10 to 14 inches tall and can weigh up to about 25 pounds. They have a thick, medium to long double-layered coat that is usually black but may also be brown, red, tan, or white. They are short dogs with large heads and pointed ears. Even though the Bushland Terrier is intelligent, they can be stubborn so they are somewhat difficult to train. They do like children and other pets but they should be socialized when they are puppies so they will get along better with cats and other people’s pets.

Bushland Terrier Breed History

The parent breed, the Cairn Terrier, is descendent of indigenous working dogs of the Scottish Highlands. Noted in the 16th century, these dogs were used primarily for hunting foxes and rabbits and for shepherding. Bravery, strength and the determination were admired traits of the breed. The Cairn Club of Scotland was formed in 1910; today, the Cairn Terrier still keeps his original characteristics. The Scottish Terrier has been documented since the 1500s and was also known to be proficient at routing game from their dens. Royal households kept both the Scottish and the Cairn Terrier; the Scottish Terrier was a member of Queen Victoria's kennels. Also a presidential canine, the Scottish Terrier has been a guest in the White House as the pet of Roosevelt, Eisenhower and George W. Bush.

Bushland Terrier Breed Appearance

The Bushland Terrier is a small and furry dog that grows to about 13 inches and weighs about 20 pounds on average. Their thick and double-layered coat is medium to long and although it can be any color, black is the most common. Their short legs make their bodies look long but they are of average length. The Bushland Terrier tends to look more like a Scottish Terrier with the large and pointed ears and the muzzle of the Cairn Terrier. When they run, they look almost comical and seem to have a difficult time jumping up on things. However, they enjoy running around like any other dog.

Bushland Terrier Breed Maintenance

Your Bushland Terrier needs to be brushed at least three or four times a week to prevent matting and lessen shedding. Their long and thick fur can be difficult to brush so you will need a metal comb and hard bristle brush. Use your fingers to loosen matting and tangles rather than using the metal comb, which will damage the hair. Clean your dog’s ears with a soft cloth or cotton balls and water once a week. Watch for redness, earwax buildup, and ear mites. To prevent dental disease, brush your dog’s teeth at least two or three times a week with special toothpaste made for dogs. You should also trim your dog’s nails when needed.

Bushland Terrier Temperament

Even though the Bushland Terrier is a friendly dog that likes people and other pets, they need to be socialized when young to make sure they know how to act with young children, small animals, and strangers. They do make good watch dogs because they are loyal and courageous even though they are small. They do not like to be told what to do and may be hard to train so you have to let your Bushland Terrier know that you are the boss right from the beginning. Use positive reinforcement rather than physical punishment to prevent aggression. They are fun loving animals that enjoy your company so be sure to spend a lot of time with them.

Bushland Terrier Activity Requirements

The Bushland Terrier likes to play and needs at least 45 minutes to an hour of activity every day. A dog that does not get enough exercise will usually have behavior problems as they get bored and turn to other activities. A trip to the local dog park, jog around the neighborhood, or long game of fetch are all excellent choices for your Bushland Terrier. They love to run and will do their best in agility competitions so you may want to try that too. If you do not have a fenced yard, be sure to take your dog out at least once a day on a leash to play and get some fresh air.

He's the best dog. That's it. We haven't met a dog or human who does not love him. All he wants to do is hang out and be happy. He rolls his eyes at confrontation and doesn't cause trouble. Roo is a perfect boy with a perfect baby blep. He came to us as an almost 2 year old Korean street dog and seemed to already have being a good boy figured out.

She's amazing, very very loyal and in most cases won't respond to other people except for me, her owner. She has so much energy and needs to be played with but is almost comical, so playing with her is never a chore. She needs to be brushed/combed at least every other day, that doesn't take long though as long as you keep up with it. She is so so affectionate, and wary of new people but warms up pretty quick. She is very stubborn though, and training has been difficult but she's slowly learning and it's so worth it.
