The Cava-lon is a hybrid dog and is a mix between a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Papillon. They are small dogs weighing up to 18 pounds and are usually black, brown, white, silver, red or black and tan. Their coats are long and silky and will need fairly regular brushing to keep from getting matted. The Cava-lon is a cheerful and playful dog and they make great family pets as they also get on well with children. They are intelligent and easy to train as they are quite responsive. They do not need a huge amount of exercise but regular walks will help maintain fitness.

Cava-lon Breed History

The Cava-lon is a combination of a Chevalier King Charles Spaniel and a Papillon with its origins in France, Italy and Belgium. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was named after King Charles I of Britain in the 1600s. Queen Victoria also owned one but developed a slightly different breed known today as the English Toy Spaniel in America and the King Charles Spaniel in the United Kingdom by mixing Cavaliers with Pugs and the Japanese Chin. They were smaller with shorter, flatter faces and a domed skull. In 1926 an American Roswell Eldridge offered a sum of money to find a pair who resembled the original small spaniel. A year later a dog called Ann’s Son was identified and became the breed standard for the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was officially recognized by the Kennel Club of England in 1944 and the first Cavaliers were sent to America in 1952. They were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1996 in the Toy Group. A Chevalier was featured on TV series Sex and the City. It was named Elizabeth Taylor and belonged to the character Charlotte York. The Papillon also has a long association with royalty and appears in paintings of royal families around Europe. It is said that Marie Antoinette was holding her favourite Papillon under her arm when she walked to the guillotine. Papillons, whose nicknames include Butterfly Dog, Squirrel Dog, and Phal, have often been depicted in Italian paintings in the Renaissance period while King Louis XIV is believed to have imported the dogs for his court. The Papillon, whose name comes from the French word for butterfly, is also called the Continental Toy Spaniel. Papillons arrived in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century with the American Kennel Club recognizing them in 1915 although they were only registered in the mid-1930s. In 1999, a Papillon made breed history when it took Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club show.

Cava-lon Breed Appearance

Cava-lons are small dogs weighing up to 18 pounds and come in several different colours including black, brown, white, silver, red or black and tan. Their coats are long and silky and they need to be groomed quite regularly to keep them looking neat. They have medium sized dark brown eyes with an alert expression. Depending on which parent breed is dominant your pet may have longer ears like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or more fringed ones like the Papillon which actually means "butterfly," and refers to the breed's fringed upright ears, which look like a butterfly's outspread wings.

Cava-lon Breed Maintenance

Cava-lons will need a moderate amount of grooming which will include regular brushing to keep the silky coat looking good. You won’t need to brush your dog more than twice a week but regular brushing does keep the skin healthy by stimulating blood flow. It also helps to remove loose hair and keep tangles from forming. Because of the long hair on the ears it is important to check the ears regularly for dirt or signs of irritation and clean them gently with cotton wool. Brushing the teeth daily with a good canine toothpaste is a good habit to get into while check their nails often to see if they need clipping.

Cava-lon Temperament

Cava-lons are intelligent, cheerful dogs who love nothing more than being with family members and are also good with children. They are very affectionate and are quite easy pets to manage so are good for first time pet owners. They are also good with other dogs and family pets but may chase smaller animals so best to keep your dog on a leash when outdoors and take them for socialization classes when they are puppies. They are quite easy dogs to train and will respond well to positive reinforcement. They are not regarded as good watchdogs but are very alert and will need a fair bit of exercise to keep fit and healthy. Because they are quite small dogs they can do well in an apartment but should be taken out daily for exercise. Both parent breeds love to chase balls and have regular play sessions but are happy to also spend time getting attention from the family.

Cava-lon Activity Requirements

Your Cava-lon does not need an enormous amount of activity but will need regular exercise and playtime to keep fit and are happy. They don’t like the cold so never leave them outside for any length of time in winter and try not to walk them too far in extreme temperatures. They don’t bark a lot and will be happy playing in a home with a fenced in yard but will also do well in an apartment as long as they are taken out every day. Being intelligent and playful dogs they will enjoy games that require mental stimulation to keep them happy and content.

My Bella is the absolute BEST dog ever!!!! My old girl has been actively acting as not only my best friend but my self-trained Service Dog/Asistance Animal for practically her whole life!!! She went to through my senior year of college dorm living with me and she absolutely THRIVED! She loved my dormmates and all our friends and was so easy to train towards any new people or enviornments! She is the most adaptable dog I think I've met and she has SUCH a personality! She's only had a minor injury and one bout of sickness when she was a very small puppy, but other than that she shocks her vets every year with how healthy and long-lasting she's been even compared to dogs younger than her. Shes lived in a nyc apartment and in a house as well and loves her backyard and her nature walks as we live in a lovely private apartment complex now. I would truly be incredibly lost without her and frankly don't know what I'll do when she passes. If the BEST DOG could be defined in the dictionary her picture would definitely be right there. She is also the absolute best at her job being a medical and mental health service dog and she absolutely THRIVES with consistent training drills and mental stimulation like puzzles and stuff... she clears those puzzles quicker than any dog I've met. The only thing I would say about this breed is TAKE THEIR NEED FOR EXCERISE AND MENTAL STIMULATION EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY!!! THEY N E E D IT!! I recently thought about transitioning her to retirement since she is newly 10 and service dogs are usually retired around 10 or 11 and she LET ME KNOW RIGHT AWAY she still had ALLLLLLL the energy she needed to continue to do her job and then some! If you dont satisfy both the need for physical activity and mental stimulation they can get a little too hyper and destructive but shes never been the agressive type in that. As long as you give them the time they are PERFECT!

If I had custom ordered a 'dream dog'this little guy is perfect. His prior mommy passed away and he needed a new home. I don't like small yappers, so when I heard about him I wasn't interested. Then I saw his picture.CUTE!Then I met him. Love at first sight. Smart, sweet, QUIET unless someone is at the door. Doesn't eat much. Loves to accompany me everywhere, learns quickly, and loves to sit in my lap or be by my side. Offleash activities are awesome. He is a gentleman socially with other dogs. Loves to be around the barn with me. Loves to hint and chase birds and rabbits, but not quick enough to catch them. A super great pet.

As a previous review stated, if I had to pick a perfect dog for me, this dog would 100% be it! She’s an absolute dream dog. Everyone that meets her cannot get over the fact that she’s not your typical small, yappy dog. She’s extremely friendly and loves being pet by others. She’s a little timid around other dogs, but warms up quickly. I take her everywhere with me because it’s so easy to do so. She does well in a car, in loud places, at the park, or at home alone. She is playful and requires frequent play and walks, but she’s so fun to play with you don’t mind doing so! Her only health issues this far occurred when she was a puppy. She was such a small pup - 1 pound when I took her home - that she had trouble keeping enough food in her system and suffered from diabetic seizures due to this. She grew out of this and hasn’t had any health issues since. The vet continually says she’s one of the best small dogs he’s met! Overall, I’m ecstatic to have ended up with such a perfect dog. Would recommend a Cavalon to anyone looking!!

Our Cava-lon, Leo is white with brown spots and black highlights. He is very affectionate and follows us everywhere we go and is the PERFECT dog. He was potty trained and crate trained within days and learns every new trick almost immediately(with the help of treats). Does well in the crate while we are gone without barking. He is ornery and smart and knows exactly how to get our attention. Loves to cuddle on the couch most of the time but also has a few short spurts of energy throughout the day.
