The Chilier is a hybrid breed. It is a combination of the parent breeds Chihuahua and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He is a wonderful, family-oriented dog. He is highly affectionate and playful. He is a laid-back, happy dog, and he bonds quickly to his family. He may be a variety of colors, depending upon his direct parentage. He may be a better watchdog than comparable breeds. He is suited to live in many environments including apartments or larger homes with a fenced-in area in which he can play.

Chilier Breed History

While there is not much information on the Chilier breed itself, one can still learn much about the breed by studying the parent breeds. Two main theories abound as to the history of the lively Chihuahua. Said to have either come from China to Mexico aboard trading ships, or to have descended from the Techichi  dog of South or Central America, this tiny dog was treated like royalty because he was thought to have healing powers of a magical nature. Placed on the pillows of those who were ill, he was also cremated and buried with his owners when they passed away. The Aztecs, who involved the Chihuahua in their medical and spiritual rituals, depicted these events on ancient works. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a relatively new breed or so described, as they have gone through many changes while being developed over the years. From the long snout version favored by King Charles II to the shorter nose canine which came to be when bred with Pugs after the Kings's reign was complete, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel of today came to the United States in the early 1940's and breed standards were finally set with the formation of the Cavalier KIng Charles Spaniel Club in the 1950's. Nicknamed "the comforter spaniel," President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy had one of these regal spaniels in the White House. The American Kennel Club recognized the Cavalier King Charles breed in it's own right in 1995.

Chilier Breed Appearance

The Chilier’s color, type of coat, and length of coat all depend upon the immediate parentage of the Chilier. The parent breeds of the Chilier are slightly different in size and in the way their coat is made up. Some Chihuahuas have longer hair. Others are short-haired. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has medium to long fur. The smooth-coated Chihuahua has a smooth, shiny coat that is close to the body with a ruff of thicker hair on the neck. The long-coated Chihuahua has a soft coat that may be slightly curly. The ears will have an extra fringe of hair and a plumed tail. He may also have feathering on his feet. Chihuahuas may be a variety of colors, so predicted a color for its progeny is difficult. Colors range from black, white, fawn, chocolate, gray, silver, tricolor, brindle, spotted, and merle. It is also important to know about the appearance of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in order to determine what the Chilier might look like. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel generally has a medium-length coat which is generally silky to the touch with wavy hair. He may come in a variety of colors: Blenheim, tricolor, black and tan, or ruby. Generally, Blenheim is the most common color make-up of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, which is a chestnut and white coat. He will have feathered hair on his ears and tail. Your Chilier will most likely be long haired with a soft coat. His eyes will be round and a bulge somewhat as is seen in the parent breeds.

Chilier Breed Maintenance

The Chilier has moderate grooming requirements. He is not difficult to maintain; grooming once a week is often more than enough to keep your Chilier in tip-top shape. He is a minimal shedder; simply brushing him once a week with a bristle brush should be sufficient to work his natural oils through his coat and remove any excess hair. Of course, during shedding season, you may need to do this more than once a week. He will only need a bath when he gets dirty. You should brush your Chilier’s teeth at least three times a week; however, if you want to prevent gum disease, brush the dog’s teeth daily. Trim your dog’s nails every other week as breakage can be painful if it occurs.

Chilier Temperament

While there is not a lot of information regarding the Chilier, we can study information regarding his parent breeds in order to learn what to expect from this hybrid. The Chihuahua can be a temperamental breed. They often bond to one person in their family and may simply tolerate other humans around him. This is not always true, and socialization is important so that your dog will know how to behave and what is expected of him at all times. The Chihuahua is confident, often acting like a terrier. He is alert and does not like strangers. However, he can also be highly affectionate. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel enjoys people; in fact, he never meets a stranger. The Cavalier is not a great watchdog; he does not bark often, and even if he does alert you to a stranger, if the stranger is remotely friendly, the Cavalier reciprocates. A nice balance between the parents will be seen in your hybrid. Reserved but friendly, cautious but warming up once you give the okay, the Chilier will be happy to please.

Chilier Activity Requirements

The Chilier is an active little dog. He loves to chase small animals such as squirrels, and he will play as long as you allow. However, be careful not to let the Chilier overexert himself. Your hybrid can adapt well to apartment living or living in a small home with or without a yard. He enjoys lying in your lap, but he also is very athletic, and can be a great companion while throwing a Frisbee or playing fetch. It is recommended that he always be kept on a leash while outside of the home or a fenced-in area. Be aware of the condition of your Chilier in every temperature. He may mind the heat or cold.

Saphire a male has just passed away in my arms 3 months short of 18 years old. He was absolutely the most beautiful, smartest, warmest, service dog for my wife's disabilities one could ever hope for. He was born 3 months before we were married and took possession of him just 1-month-old. He was trained to detect early signs of breathing attack/asthma issues, seizures, reminder meds, which he could recognize Saphire would signal to us if any of these conditions were coming on prior to my wife realizing it. He was amazing also for reassurance, comfort and would be protective if he had to be but never ever aggressive. He tended to be on the lazy side but that was trained in him to sit lay quietly. He only barked when people came to the door long before they reached the door as he was perceptive. When not working he knew 14 tricks such as talking, he could count, refuse to eat tricks on poison command, roll over, play dead, sit, stand, heel, even answer who is the best baseball player in the world...barking saying Babe Ruth. Traveled Jet sitting on the floor or in the car without making a peep logging more air miles than most people. He loved the beach with him, mom, fishing with dad and absolutely to smell things his favorite past time when not working. He loved walking in towns like Bay City, Frankenmuth Traverse City MI and the Florida Gulf Coast cities where we wintered. He loved Florida Winters. Saphire went into the finest places 5-star resorts hotels, hospitals, oceanfront homes, restaurants casino, stores you name it if a human could go there Saphire was there from Sanibel Island Boca Grand Florida to Grand Canyon to Vegas to Florida to the East coast. Saphire ate 1 meal per day at dinner and not dog food since he was a puppy. He ate meats: chicken, beef, steak, pork liver and tuna with mayo. He loved Arby's roast beef sandwiches no bread. He did like a little Italian bread with a little butter, little parts of PayDay bars, and Honey Oat health bars. He loved Jack Links Teriyaki he called Tweeties only Teriyaki jerky. He did not consume junk food, never eat food or pills on the floor. He never ever was destructive as a puppy to an adult and completely house trained within 2 weeks of being a puppy. He would hold going to the bathroom for 12 hours if he had to. If he ever had an accident would be due to illness he would make sure to go to the tile or marble floor, not the wood floor. He was attacked twice by untrained wild Pit Bull Bull Mastiff nearly killed Saphire I saved his life twice and choked the bull mastiff pit dogs out sending Saphire to the emergency hospital at great cost. He fell down the full flight of basement stairs at 16 playing with his G.F. rushed to ER but turned out to be OK. We home nursed him to the very end, not in pain he died in my arms after spending his last night in our bed, as he did for 17.9 years. I think the Caviler King Charles was the most gentle smart side of Saphire. We got his exact DNA which was 50%-50% to his great grandparents because we just had to know. This is the best mix of a dog breed I would ever think of especially for a Service dog dealing with these health issues and would want one again just like Saphire. We paid a ridiculous $50 for him, you divide the cost by 17.9 years do you see value? We would not have traded him for millions of dollars the answer would have been no. He was our faithful Service Dog, pet and child all in I one. I hope you can appreciate our loss at this beautiful gift from God.
