Chinaranian Breed History

The Chinaranian is a combination of a Chinese Crested and a Pomeranian, also known as a Pom or Pom Pom, and who is the smallest member of the Spitz family of dogs. They are feisty, intelligent dogs whose owners have included luminaries such as theologian Martin Luther, artist Michelangelo, physicist Isaac Newton and composer Mozart. They are named for the Pomerania region in Germany and Poland where it was believed they were bred down to size. The breed was also popular with British royalty including Queen Victoria who bred the smaller variety of Pomeranians. It is claimed that on her deathbed she asked for her favorite Pom called Turi to be with her. Although the first Pom, called Dick, was entered into the American Kennel Club (AKC) stud book in 1888 it was only in 1900 that the AKC officially recognized the breed. Despite the name, Chinese Crested dogs don't come from China. There are two varieties, the Hairless and the Powderpuff, with the Hairless gene being the dominant in these dogs. They are believed to be related to the African Hairless Dog or the Mexican Hairless Dog, also known as the Xoloitzcuintli. This may indicate that the origins are of Africa or Mexico . The American Hairless Dog Club was started in 1959 by Debra Wood; the Chinese Crested was recognized by the Kennel Club in the United Kingdom in 1981 and added to the roster of the American Kennel Club in 1991.

Chinaranian Breed Appearance

Chinaranian dogs are small dogs weighing up to 10 pounds and who are likely to vary according to which of the parent breeds is dominant. The colors are usually brown, black, cream, blue or grey and the coats are usually short and can be thick and fine. Pomeranians can be quite fluffy dogs whereas the Chinese Crested can be Hairless or Powderpuff, where the body is covered in long, silky hair. Pom’s eyes are almond-shaped, dark in color, and bright and they have erect ears on top of the head. The Chinese Crested also have dark, almond-shaped eyes and their ears are quite large and erect. As both of the parents have very similar characteristics, your Chinaranian will definitely have eyes featured prominently on a face with an alert look.

Chinaranian Breed Maintenance

Regular grooming will be needed to keep your pet looking good but a lot will depend on which parent breed it most takes after. If your pet takes after a Powderpuff Chinese Crested, it will need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting. The hairless variety will need sunblock when going outside and will also need moisturizer for the skin. They also needed to be bathed regularly with a good pet shampoo. Chinese Crested dogs are regarded as hypoallergenic, so are good for people with allergies. Pomeranians who are known for their fox-like faces and plush coats need quite regular grooming to prevent their fur getting matted. Both parent breeds, being small, are known for dental issues so be certain to brush the teeth daily or at the minimum, three times a week.

Chinaranian Temperament

The Chinaranian is a playful, affectionate dog who will make a good family pet, though preferably in a household where the children are a little older. They are loyal and intelligent and can be trained, but owners may need to have some patience. Like their parent breeds, the Chinaranian is expressive and curious and loves nothing more than being the center of attention. They don’t like being left alone for any length of time. The Chinese Crested is known to “hug” their owners with its paws to show affection while Poms also respond well to owners who spend a lot of time with them. Even though they are small dogs they do need quite a lot of exercise so would do well in a house with a fenced in yard. They could adapt to apartment living provided they were taken out regularly for exercise sessions. They will get on well with other dogs as long as they are socialised at an early age.

Chinaranian Activity Requirements

Despite being small dogs, the Chinaranian will need a fair bit of exercise to keep in shape but it is important not to overdo it. Both parent breeds don’t need more than 30 minutes a day but your pet will love going for walks or to the park to socialise with other dogs. Your pet will also enjoy ball games in a fenced in yard and will be happy to also play indoors. Poms can become overheated and dehydrated in summer when it gets too hot so don’t exercise your dog in the middle of the day. Chinese Crested dogs on the other hand, battle with the cold so don’t enjoy being outside when the temperature plummets.
