United States
Chihuahua
American Pit Bull Terrier
Mexican Bulldog, Pithuahua

The Chipit is an unusual mix of the Chihuahua and the American Pit Bull Terrier. They can range from small to medium at about 12 to 18 inches tall and 15 to 35 pounds. Because the Chihuahua is a small dog and the American Pit Bull Terrier is a medium-sized dog, their size can range quite a bit. The size that your new furry addition becomes will depend on the dominant parental genes. Chipits can come in just about any color and may have short or long hair, depending on the coat of the Chihuahua because they come in short and long hair varieties. They are friendly dogs who like older children and pets but need to be socialized as puppies so they can get along with other animals.

Chipit Breed History

The Chihuahua has a few different histories depending on who you ask. Some believe that the Chihuahua originated with the Aztecs who sacrificed them in ceremonial practices and buried them with their relatives when they passed away. This was supposedly done to help guide the dead into the afterlife. Another story claims that the Chihuahua was brought to the New World by traders in the 1500s. Yet another theory is that this breed is descendent from a native dog called the Techichi, which was a small dog in Central and South America. According to legend, the Aztecs and Toltecs may have used the Chihuahua for food, although this is not proven. The most common belief is that the Chihuahua was discovered in Mexico in a small town called Chihuahua, which is where they got their name. The American Kennel Club (AKC) first registered the Chihuahua in 1904.  The American Pit Bull Terrier is a mix of Bulldogs and Terriers that originated in the 19th century in the United Kingdom. They were originally bred to be used as bull baiters and for dog fighting until these sports were outlawed in 1835. After that, these dogs were mainly used for hunting rats and other vermin. The American Pit Bull Terrier was bred to be gentle with humans so they were easy to handle during dog fights. Sadly, their past reputation follows them today. This breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936. The Chipit is a feisty pup that brings out the best of both parents.

Chipit Breed Appearance

The Chipit may have either long or short hair, depending on the type of Chihuahua parent and which genes are dominant. If the hair is short, the coat will be hard and close to the body. Long haired versions usually have a rough undercoat. The coat may be tan, brown, merle, brindle, chocolate, gray, gold, white, black, or any combination of those colors. This breed varies in size due to the size variations of the parent breeds. They are most often about 12 to 18 inches tall and can weigh about 15 to 35 pounds. The Chipit has a broad back, muscular body, strong legs, big ears, and a small head.

Chipit Breed Maintenance

If your Chipit has a short coat, maintenance is easy but you must brush your companion often to prevent excessive shedding. Daily brushing with a soft bristle brush is recommended. For long hair, you should brush your dog with a stiff bristle brush and comb three or four times a week. You can bathe them when needed but do not shampoo too often or their skin will become dry. In addition, you should clean their ears with a soft cloth or cotton ball once a week and check for wax buildup and signs of infection or ear mites. Trim their nails when needed and brush their teeth a few times a week.

Chipits often suffer from patellar luxation. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Wag! Wellness lets pet parents compare insurance plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Chipit Temperament

Your Chipit is a very family-oriented dog and will love nothing more than to hang out with you. In fact, they do not like to be alone and can become anxious and depressed if left on their own too long. Behavior problems can ensue if they are lonely as well. They are friendly with older children and pets but should be socialized as puppies to prevent issues with other animals. They can be bullies at times and will pick fights with much larger dogs if they believe their family is in danger. Training the clever Chipit is somewhat easy, but you have to be consistent with the rules and promote positive reinforcement.

Chipit Activity Requirements

The Chipit has a lot of energy and needs at least 60 minutes of strenuous activity per day. This breed loves to play fetch and run around the yard. They are also talented at agility training. If you have a securely fenced-in yard, letting your Chipit play and run outside for a few hours a day while you garden will prevent boredom. Behavior problems can begin if your dog has too much idle time or has excess energy to burn. Try going for a hike in the park or take your dog for a long walk around the neighborhood.

Sadie Mae has been one of my most loyal and loving sidekick. She wants to do whatever it is that I'm doing. Sadie is patient and kind; she is so attuned to my moods and well-being. When it comes to training, Sadie has been one of the easiest. She is quick to learn and is very eager to please me. Overall, Sadie Mae has remained in good health and shows no signs of chronic joint pains. My Chipit is the best friend anyone would want in a pet.

We rescued our Chipit Marina 3 months ago and have been loving her ever since. She is the sweetest girl and will follow us everywhere. She does not like to let us out of her sight. Because she is already 2, training has been slow going, but she is doing much better with leash walking. Crate training, not so much. She is very food-oriented, so that helps with the training. Marina is very protective of me, specifically around men she doesn't know. She loves my husband to pieces too and I swear her tail is about to fall off every night when he gets home from work. She does shed a bit, but nothing a vacuuming weekly won't take care of. We found she is terrified of loud noises (fireworks, thunder), but that seems common of every dog I've had. Marina just wants someone petting her and being near her and we happily oblige. Great dog!!

He is sometimes aggressive towards other dogs. He was potty trained very easily. He knows a couple of tricks like sit, jump, stay, stop, and go.I would say that he really loves to play a little rough if you let him. If you tell him no he understands. He is also good with children, unless you bother him a lot.

I recently took in a chipit: black and white Pit coat/body features with Chihuahua tail, legs, ears, and face. She's had babies before and is 4 years old. Sweetest dog ever. Friendly with other dogs, people, even rambunctious children. She loves any attention she can get. She is stubborn at times with training and we are working on getting her not to jump on people/get in thsir face when all eyes aren't on her. Overall wonderful breed though. I absolutely love her.

Surprised! Our Female Bully, Karmel, was bred with my daughter's American Blue Mix Pit. To our surprise, a neighbor's Chihuahua possibly got ahold of her as well while playing in a field. Neyo-Mya's dainty size gives us reason to believe he's a beautiful little Brindle bundle of joy! Being her only survivor he's a blessing as well!

My little guy is the love of my life! He is insanely energetic but loves to take long naps. Will chew EVERYTHING AND ANYTHING. His little razor sharp teeth hurt like hell but he understands when you say no or ouch. Potty training is going pretty well but accidents are still happening. Loves attention and playing rough but will let me hold him down for kisses whenever I want. 10/10 best boy ever

I’ve had my brindle baby since she was six weeks and met her parents. She somehow taught herself all of the tricks she knows and is surprisingly smart for a chipit. She doesn't get along with other dogs too well because she gets jealous but adores being around people. I know its annoying at first but she did outgrow her “chew everything” phase right when she turned 2 and only chewed what she was supposed to. Shes really energetic and very easy to maintain and get along with.

Highly affectionate, but EXTREMELY protective of female owner, even from my boyfriend. He growls when my bf gives me a kiss goodbye. Very cuddly and snuggly, but has severe separation anxiety and chews up my comforter and clothes and his beds while I’m at work. But he’s the best dog I could’ve ever gotten and I never regret getting him.

Question

What should I breed my Chipit With ?

Answer
If breeding, please ensure you have suitable homes in mind beforehand. It is also advisable that you only breed from parents that are healthy and friendly. Chipins are popular and you may find most interest if you need with another Chipin. Ideally, find a male that is the same size or smaller.
