Yorkiechi, Chiyorkie, Yorkie-chi, Yorkchi, York-chi, Chiorkie, York Chi

It’s no surprise that the Chorkie is a small, adorable breed — they’re a Yorkie Chihuahua mix after all. They’re an ideal choice for less active pet parents because they don’t require as much exercise as many other breeds. Although they make the perfect family pet, Chorkie dogs will be better with older children rather than younger ones.

In this guide to the Chorkie, you’ll learn:

  • The Chorkie is a mix between a Chihuahua and a Yorkshire Terrier
  • They bond closely with their family becoming very loyal and protective
  • They can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long
  • This crossbreed is ideal for those with allergies as they shed very little

Chorkie breed overview

So, what is a Chorkie? This hybrid or mixed breed dog is a Yorkie and Chihuahua mix. They can therefore inherit the appearance, personality, temperament and health issues from either or both parent breeds. But, most often this small dog is fun and playful, forming a very close bond with their owner.

If you’d like a Chorkie puppy, the cost is likely to vary depending on the quality of the parent breeds — such as whether they’re show dogs, for example. A Chorkie can cost you anywhere from $200 to $3,500, although most often this will be between $400 and $600. You may, of course, be able to rescue a Chorkie. This will be significantly cheaper while giving a dog in need a second chance.

The Chorkie lifespan is up to 15 years. Small dogs do typically live much longer than larger breeds and this crossbreed benefits from two small parent breeds who both have a similarly long life expectancy. In fact, the Chihuahua has been known to live up to 20 years.

From the day you bring your puppy home, you want to have peace of mind that they’re covered for any unexpected health issues. If a Chorkie is joining your family soon, browse and compare the  best pet insurance plans so you are prepared.

Chorkie Breed History

Not much is known about the history of this relatively new hybrid but it’s believed that they were first bred in the 1990s, likely in North America.

The Chihuahua, on the other hand, originated in Mexico back in 100 AD and has been a big part of Mexican culture. While much of the history is a mystery, they are believed to have emanated from a small, mute dog known as ‘Techichi’ which dates back to 300 BC.

It was believed that these tiny canines had a spiritual effect on the afterlife of the owner when they were buried together. For this reason, every Aztec family was known to have one. The Chihuahua was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904 and has grown in popularity ever since.

The Yorkshire Terrier originated in northern England where it was used to hunt and kill rats and other rodents in mines and cotton mills. In the 19th century, at the height of the industrial revolution, people from Scotland moved to England to establish their own textile operations, bringing with them their own Scottish nondescript terrier which they bred to the Waterside Terrier found in northern England.

Other suggested contributors to the ancestry of the Yorkshire Terrier include the Maltese Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, the Skye Terrier, the old rough-coated Black-and-Tan English Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, the Paisley Terrier, the now-extinct long haired Leeds Terrier and the Clydesdale Terriers. They were recognized by the American Kennel club in 1885 and have become one of the most popular dog breeds.

The Chorkie may not be recognized by the American Kennel Club but they are recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Dog Registry of America Inc and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Chorkie Breed Appearance

A Chorkie may look more like a Chihuahua or a Yorkshire Terrier — or, it could inherit characteristics from both. This means puppies can really vary in appearance but what they will be is small — a Chorkie full grown is only 8 to 15 pounds. Although you can also get a teacup Chorkie — which is bred with this smaller version of the parent breeds — and will only weigh up to about 6 lbs.

They usually have a rectangular body with the longer tail of the Chihuahua and the head shape of the Yorkie — although it can, of course, be apple-shaped like the Chihuahua.

They’re likely to have prick ears that point upwards but they may also have drop ears that fold over. There’s a chance their teeth will form an underbite. Meanwhile they will have a small black nose and large black or dark brown eyes.

Their coat will be medium or long, depending whether the parent breed was a long or short-haired Chihuahua. It’s likely to be soft and silky to touch although some can be a little coarser than others.

The main color of a Chorkie’s fur tends to be black, brown, silver, white and blue. But, again, their coloring will depend on which parent breed is more dominant. They can be almost any color from the Chihuahua side, although the color may be grizzled from the Yorkie’s side. Yorkies also tend to lighten to a gunmetal gray as they age, so you could find this happens with your Chorkie, too.

Whether you choose a Chorkie, Chihuahua, or Yorkshire Terrier, their health should be your main priority.

As well as comparing the best pet insurance plans you can sign up to a wellness plan which covers their routine appointments including annual shots and boosters.

Chorkie Breed Maintenance

Chorkie dogs are low shedders — although if the Chihuahua side is more dominant they may shed a little more. But, this does mean that they are hypoallergenic and will only require minimal grooming. You should only need to brush this crossbreed around once a week and only bathe them when necessary, perhaps once or twice a month.

While they don’t need a bath that often, you do need to keep the area around their eye clean. This should be wiped frequently to keep debris from matting and potentially resulting in infection. You’ll also need to check and clean their ears as well as regularly brushing their teeth. Make sure you also trim their nails and don’t allow them to get too long.

The Chorkie may not be as active as some other breeds but they do still require daily exercise. You can take them for a short stroll but they will equally enjoy a game of fetch. Their small size means they will shiver when cold, so they’ll need a coat to keep them warm during colder temperatures.

Their sizes means they are suitable for living in an apartment and will adapt to both life in an urban or rural area.

Chorkie health risks

Chorkies typically live long and healthy lives. But, of course, there are a few health conditions you need to be aware of. These include:

There’s also a chance of ear infections and eye problems, although these are only minor concerns.

You want to make sure you have the best insurance for your dog. So, does yours cover these conditions? Browse and compare top pet insurance providers to ensure your Chorkie is covered for any unexpected health issues.

Allergies

Dogs can get allergies just like we do. These allergies will most often affect their skin and you’ll probably notice them scratching. The skin is also likely to be inflamed and red. Of course, there are a number of things your dog could be allergic to, so first you need to determine what it is. Once you know, it can be avoided, if possible and if not, it’ll be easier to treat it.

If they’re suffering from environmental allergens (such as pollen) then this could be seasonal and one way to treat it may be by adding supplements to their food at the beginning of allergy season or ensuring you wipe down their fur whenever they come back inside.

Skin Problems

A cause of your dog's skin problems could, of course, be their allergies. But, there are other reasons they could be suffering from skin problems. As well as itchy, red and inflamed skin, look out for bald patches, dry and flaky skin, a rash or sore skin. The cause could be fleas — make sure you are regularly using a flea treatment to avoid this becoming an issue for them. It could also be other parasites such as mites and lice — the former can cause scabies or mange.

The dog could also get a skin infection such as ringworm. They could also have hormone problems that are affecting their skin including hypothyroidism and cushing’s disease. If you notice any issues with your dog's skin then it’s important to see a vet so they can determine - and then treat - the cause.

Feeding a Chorkie — what’s the best diet?

Chorkies should be fed a high-quality diet, with protein as the first ingredient. As well as being formulated for their age and individual needs, this should also be food specifically for small dogs.

Chorkie puppies should be fed three to four smaller meals a day. Once your Chorkie dog is an adult this can be reduced to two meals a day.

Your Chorkie will love treats — and this will be beneficial when training them — but remember to take this into account when serving up their meals. This crossbreed is prone to obesity so you don't want to overfeed them.

Also be aware that they can get allergies. You may need to reduce their diet and slowly introduce food back to them if you think there is an ingredient they may be allergic to. Alternatively, you may just want to avoid foods that dogs are known to be allergic to, such as wheat.

You want your Chorkie to be enjoying the best possible diet. Not sure what to feed them? Take a look at the advice from our friends at  Dog Food Advisor and discover the best dog food for Yorkies and the best dog food for Chihuahuas.

Chorkie Temperament

This sweet crossbreed can take on the personality traits of either or both of the parent breeds. They’re likely to be affectionate, loyal and loving as well as lively, cheerful and social.

There’s a chance they can show some aggression; most likely to be towards strangers and due to the fact that they’re so protective of their owners. Early socialization can help with this — start training a Chorkie puppy as soon as you can — and you may want to keep them on a leash when out walking.

They do need attention and, like the parent breeds, can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long.

This bubbly, bright and bold dog makes a wonderful family pet, although they will fare better with older children. They may be snappy with small children if they are too rough with them.

They will also get on well with other pets but may be a bit intimidated by larger animals and could react to them as a result.

This crossbreed is very intelligent and eager to please. This, coupled with the fact they form a close bond with their pet parent, can make them easy to train. Although, it’s important to note that they can be stubborn. Keeping training short and sweet with plenty of positive reinforcement should help with this.

I heard about chorkies but havent really gotten to know about them until my mom had found and bought one for my 21st birthday, she told me it was a girl. When I saw her for the first time, she was little and held onto to me when I held, she was 8 weeks old and so sweet and cute. I tried to think of a name for her, she looked like she could be a diva and then the name "Jazmyne" came and it fit. Ever since I got her, she follows me around and sees me as mom, she is like a diva; full of spunk and feist, but also is funny, clever, sweet, playful, friendly, cuddly, and so adorable. A few tricks that she knows is shake, "come" and sit. She loves to meet new people and dogs. When she plays she teases when you try to take away her toy that she wants you to take from her. I love my chorkie

Jack is by far the sweetest dog I've ever had! He's super loyal to us (me and my boyfriend), he doesn't like strangers or children he doesn't know BUT when we have guests over he's super gentle even with the smallest children. Other people describe him as brave, he LOVES playing with other dogs (the larger they are the better). We brought him in as a tiny puppy and we're a bit worried because we already had 2 other dogs, but they get along just fine and have become a little family, they even sleep together at night. He really needs to be groomed daily!!! It only takes 2 minutes so it's not a bit deal, but if I skip 1 day he looks like a stray dog and I sometimes have to cut pieces of fur out because it's impossible to groom him without hurting Jack. Jack is very active, but enjoys a good nap after a walk and leaving him alone (together with our other dogs) is not a problem. If he doesn't have a chew toy he will go for one of my shoes 🤣 We don't have a yard but live right next to a forest and huge open field where our furbabies run around and play with other doggies. My boyfriend didn't like both breeds (Chihuahua and Yorkie) but this is the only breed he wants to have in the future lol. As a true dogmommy I love all of my furbabies, but Jack will always have a special place in my heart.

My Chorkie is six years old and we named her pebbles. she very kind and easy to train. shes obedient and loves to show her affection towards us. pebbles doesn't bark as often but will do so at times. she has a brother of a different breed and at first did not get along with him. she noticed that he wasn't going anywhere so she had to get along with him. she doesn't like puppies, she prefers to stay her distance. if other dogs come near her who are not leo (her brother) she get territorial. I've noticed that she doesn't like toddlers and always tries to bite them. so i keep her away from them. besides that she is sweet to anyone and loves to be petted and cuddled. she loves all the attention given to her.

Frank is the first little dog I have ever had. Previously I have owned Rottweilers. I have never liked small dogs. But Frabkie has opened my eyes to the wonders of the chorkie. He is so loving, affectionate, playful, cheeky, strong willed, social, active, lazy at times, active at times, very outgoing and smart. He was rescued at 8 months and is still a bit skittish after all these years (hides under the bed sometimes if feeling a bit off). He does get tired and a bit grumpy at night. But I do to so I respect that. I take frank everywhere and he is usually well behaved. Sometimes gets a bit agro with other dogs when they are all on leashes. I love him so much.

My chorkie henry is the smartest, most loyal, loving, adorable dog I've ever experienced in my entire life. Ive had him since he was 6 weeks old. He only plays with stuffed animals that have a squeek ball in them, crazy over bones he is obsessed with them, and loves treats! He was so so easy to train since the day i got him he literally would cry when he wanted to go to the bathroom and ever since then he tells me when he has to go by sitting there and staring at me and i ask him do you have to go potty and if he does he runs to the door. He knows so many words my husband and i swear he is a little human at times. He doesn't like strangers that much he comes off pretty shy unless he knows you. He hates hates HATES kids. We make sure to stay away from kids. The people that he does know such as friends of ours he gets super excited to see when they come around and very affectionate towards them as well. He is super smart sometimes it blows my mind how smart he is. He can be a little snippy at times mainly when he is tired. He's very overprotective of me and my husband who he knows as mommy and daddy. Also overprotective of his food, bones, and toys. I love him so so much its incredible the amount of love my husband and i have for henry and the amount of love he has for us to. He is like a son to us and i wouldn't ever want another breed in my life chorkies are amazing and so adorable.

He likes going on long, exploratory walks
He's very protective, although he's generally okay with other people and other dogs when we go for walks. He loves taking his time to smell and explore everything when we go to the dog park, and hates running or being rushed. He's very sweet, and is easy to train when there's food involved. One thing he's learned is that when he barks, we'll pick him up so he'll stop barking, so sometimes he barks just to get attention. He's very smart, sweet, and he likes curling up under the blankets with me.

My husband and I have an empty nest. Our beloved Jack Russell terrier “Lucy Belle” passed away at the age of 14 years, and we hesitated adopting another dog because our hearts were so broken. During the 3 years after Lucy passed away, our neighbors Miniature Pincher would come visit us every day, as if she knew how much we missed Lucy. She helped heal our hearts, and when our neighbors could no longer keep their dog (long story) we really felt so sad that we wouldn’t have the visits from our little friend anymore. But it was then that we realized we were ready for another dog, but wanted a smaller one this time as we are getting older, because it’s easier for us to care for a tiny one now. My cousin found out we were open to having a small dog, and I received a message from his wife with a photo of the cutest little fella, a Chorkie they had taken in from another cousin who wasn’t allowed to have pets at the place he moved into. So here was this little guy, living outside most of the time, with three big dogs, and three children under the age of 6, and seemingly lost in the shuffle. We went to their house and took one look at this adorable little guy, and immediately knew he was going home with us! He is the sweetest and most well behaved little guy, and he loves other animals and people. Not snappy at all, and loves our cat too. He comes when called, and walks with me on the trails on the acreage we have out in the country. Occasionally he’ll take off sprinting ahead of me, but stops before going to far ahead and look back at me and wait for me to catch up. We renamed him “Doc” because he has healed our hearts. ❤️

We rescued Kodi at 4m where he lived in a bathroom and never saw outside that. Very timid at first but now he has earned the nickname Madman! He runs so fast through the house while jumping from one piece of furniture to the other even jumps on our backs and the other dogs. He loves Toys especially ones that squeak but really doesn't matter as long as he can carry it in his mouth it's his. He wants to play all day long with short naps in between. He isn't very friendly to others at all though. He aggressively barks at my 18yr old son everyday and bites him on the ankles. He displays this behavior with men and most women too. He gets along with our 2 other dogs, hates our female cat but loves her 8wk old kittens. Supposed to be my sons dog but as mentioned before was not a fan of his from day one. He has latched himself onto me but does like my husband too. If someone shows him any aggressive behavior even once he remembers and will always try to bite them every meeting after. To me, he is the cuddliest, sweetest loving little baby and I adore him to death but most people would disagree. He is the most disgusting little creature I have ever seen. He doesn't care what he walks, runs or lays in, so he is always a mess. No amount of brushing makes a difference, always gross! He doesn't like to share attention and gets aggressive even if the other dogs walk by his toys. He can jump extremely high and clears pur fence so when I pull up in the car I have to be very careful not to run him over lol! I hav9to buy him new toys a few times a week to keep him from chewing my shoes, slippers and socks. And he doesn't understand sharing toys with the other dogs, he thinks they are all his and with his sharp teeth and strong hold, can snatch a toy from either dog at anytime and run like the wind! House training has not been easy, still working at it. He goes out many, many times a day but still hikes his leg on the chairs and other things too....infuriates me to no end! He listens to me but really no one else. He follows me everywhere I go and nips at my ankles to let me know he is there. He is also a homosexuality apparently and helps himself to our 8yr male Papillon lol! He will eat anything you give him and don't give him. He is not a fan of leash walking or car rides so good thing we have a fenced in yard. Overall, I adore him so much. He has sadly pushed my Papillon away a bit due to his jealousy. But from an abused dog eating his own feces to a dog who lives his best life and has found his soulmate (me), I believe he is happy and satisfied.

My baby chorkie Roxanne is a little love bug! My heart has literally grown since I've had her as a pet. She's extremely sweet, loyal, friendly, loves people and other dogs and even cats! Having a bias toward larger breed dogs I was hesitant to add a small dog to our family but due to the challenges of renting with a large dog and our personal need to always have a dog in the house, we decided to change it up and started our search. We found the cutest little chorkie, brought him home, and named him Owen. We've had Owen for 10 years now and I honestly cannot imagine life without him. The most LOYAL and also the SMARTEST dog I've ever known. I won't go on and on about how great this guy is but I will say, aside from his innate protective and territorial nature, he is hands down the most versatile and loving little beast. Training is easy as long as you are consistent. These dogs remember EVERYTHING. Huge vocabulary. Endless antics and personality. Loves big dogs and tolerates kids as long as they are properly introduced. Guards toys and food- do not recommend letting kids feed or play with toys as this breed can be somewhat aggressive and unpredictable when it comes to the little people! (Owen has been on the go from day 1 and is constantly socialized and this is still an issue!) He is the best cuddler and loves to get under the covers on cool nights. Curious and agile, he loves to hike and explore. Needs lots of attention and exercise to keep happy and healthy. Be aware of tracheal weakness in these breeds and never use a traditional collar- only use a soft harness where tension is NOT on neck or throat to leash and walk.

It's been a bit rough with the training part because they are SOOO stubborn but also energetic. He loves to play with other dogs and humans. He is super attached so just about every-time I get up he his following. He had basically whats like a dog common cold when he rescued him from our local animal shelter buy they gave us some medicine and he was back to normal in two-weeks.

Mushu is a very strong willed little love. She can learn new tricks almost instantly. She has a huge stubborn streak so sometimes more patients is required. She has a big brother who is a 9 year old Jackchi. He is a very calm dominant spirit, she is excited dominant, we’ve been working on moving her towards a calm submissive state. She definitely tried to take over as pack leader, but with lots of work and patients, she very rarely challenges him. She was very people and dog aggressive and barked a lot as a new puppy. With lots of socializing, practice, and patients, she now is able to walk through Home Depot with no sign of aggression towards people or other dogs. She is slow to trust new people, but as long as they wait for her to come to them she is very loving. With her dominant and protective nature, she showed signs of aggression in new situations early. With food, people, noises, large objects, the list goes on. Working on blocking her dominant side has proved very helpful, her energy is becoming more and more calm and submissive as time goes on. She requires very little grooming. Leaky eyes and a little grooming around her backside to keep her from getting messy back there with all that hair. When it comes to loves, she got the most! She loves to be held and kissed. In my experience so far I think Chorkies make excellent family dogs. Very excitable, but very moldable if your energy remains steady and calm with them. Like with anything in life, you get out of it what you put into it!

Adopted Vinny from the humane society in March of 2019. He has a short fused aggressive temper but only at certain times like when you try to take his food from him or you touch/carry him when he isn’t wanting that and when anyone enters the home or walks by the front door. Other than than that he’s really loving, chill, and cuddly. P.s. he does like humping his blankets and licking his stuffed animal toys very intimately.

He is my awesome buddy always wanting to be near me. We love each other and snuggle together every night. He loves one of my sons and hates the other. He doesn’t like the other dogs near his food or around me. He really has no idea that he is tiny. He loves waking up next to me.

Brother and sister Chorkies have been great, sis is chubby and chill bro is skinny and hyper! LOL complete opposites in personality as he is semi aggressive with strangers while she loves everyone but they are both quite vocal and very fun and sweet. I brought them home as rescues but they rescue me daily from dullness and bring much joy!! :)

We have only had our little guy for a few weeks. His previous family rehomed him to us. He is fairly quiet and chill and very loving and gentle. Just don’t try to brush his teeth or he’ll get a snarly face and maybe bite you, lol. He seems to like us all equally. It will be interesting to see how he takes to visitors once Covid restrictions ease, as he is wary of strangers on our walks. I also can’t wait to see how he likes the cottage this summer. The worst thing about him is that he will sneak off and do a mess in the house but that’s my fault for allowing him the opportunity. It’s hard though because we take him out plenty often and you’d think he’d have gotten the idea by now. It’s been cold and snowy so who wants to have to go out in that to do their business? I’m banking on nicer weather bringing great results. He’s the smallest and lightest dog I’ve ever had. He’s my 4th since childhood. I’ve loved all my dogs; Cocker Spaniel, Cavalier King Charles, Maltipoo and now a Chorkie. I love dogs in general. We are a one dog at a time kind of household. I like spoiling him by putting a bit of boiled chicken in his kibble or stirring some baby food in with it. Rocky is super cute! We were lucky to get him and to be the chosen ones!

Love my little guy! He's a puppy right now so he has a lot of energy but also sleeps a lot. He had some health issues because when we rescued him he was covered in fleas, but he's doing great now. Sassy dog, can be stubborn, but loves to play and meet new people.

The chorkie is all the attributes listed in the article. And it's especially true that chorkies aren't good with small kids as small kids easily irritate aggressive dogs. All around I love my chorkie, hes loyal and has never snapped on me, also a very low maintenance.

Question

Hello, I've got an 11 week old Chorkie puppy who this week has been allowed to go out for walks. I'm not sure how much I should be walking him. So far I've only taken him to the end of the road and back twice a day. But he still seems to be running madly around the flat and I'm not sure now whether that's from being over tired or not enough exercise. Any advice would be much appreciated
