Chowski, Husky Chow, Chow-husky

The Chusky is a medium to large breed dog that can weigh anywhere from 40 to 65 pounds. This hybrid is a cross between the Chow Chow and the Siberian Husky. A fun and curious dog, he will be high maintenance due to his heavily shedding coat. Quite friendly and playful, he will make a great addition to households with children;  however, bear in mind that they can be quite stubborn and demanding, so a firm, experienced pet owner is required. These dogs do well in colder climates as they have relatively dense coats, they are also great dogs to have if you have other smaller pets.

Chusky Breed History

The Chow Chow is an ancient breed of hunting, guarding and herding dog that likely originated back as far as 150 B.C. Considered to be one of the ancient dogs of fourteen specific breeds, the Chow Chow is thought to have been a part of nomadic tribes known to move within the regions of Mongolia and China during the Han Dynasty. Once owned by emperors in China, the breed made its way to Europe in the 1800's via British merchant ships. Queen Victoria, a lover of dogs of many breeds, owned a Chow Chow. Other notable owners have been Sigmund Freud, President Calvin Coolidge and Martha Stewart. The breed has had some success at the Westminster Kennel Club show and was registered with the American Kennel Club in 1903. The Siberian Husky is a class of working dog that is often said to have a wolf like appearance. These dogs originated in Siberia, and like the Chow Chow, were faithful companions of a nomadic group, the Chukchi. The Siberian Husky was said to be an excellent companion for children as well, since when they weren’t working (sledding) they were cared for by the women and children, contributing to the non-aggressive behavior of the breed. A courageous, strong canine, the Siberian Husky has performed heroic deeds such as the transport of serum to a village over run with diphtheria. The trek was taken in 1925 over treacherous terrain in terrible weather conditions. The pack of Huskies led the way, guiding the men on the sleds toward the village in unbelievable time. Today, both the Chow Chow and Siberian Husky are widely recognized by the American Kennel Club and many other clubs for their agile, powerful nature. The hybrid however, has very little known about its origins but is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Dog Registry of America and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Chusky Breed Appearance

The Chusky is a broad, deep chested dog breed that can weigh about 40 to 65 pounds on average. Their muzzle tends to be medium in length and the ears are erect and straight upright. The nose of this hybrid is black, though the muzzle can be either long and tapered like the Husky or it may be quite broad as is seen in the Chow Chow parent. Often the eyes have an almond shape and will resemble the eyes of a Husky. His eyes may be brown, blue,or hazel, or he may even have two different colored eyes. The feet are typically webbed and cat like, similar to that of the Chow Chow, and the body is long and muscular. His coat will be double coated, soft and dense and can range in color any where from dark reds and golds to a faded cream mix.

Chusky Breed Maintenance

The Chusky is a heavy shedder. You may find yourself constantly vacuuming behind your Chusky. He will need to be brushed daily with a pin brush and during times of heavy shed the use of a deshedding tool will come in very handy to remove all of the loose clumps of fur. Some owners of this hybrid have their hair trimmed during the summer months in order to avoid heat stress that could be brought on by such a dense fur coat. Brushing  of the teeth several times a week, nail trimming on a bi-monthly basis, and ear cleaning to check for dirt and moisture should be done weekly. Start the routine when your Chusky is young and grooming will not be a troublesome time at all.

Chusky Temperament

The Siberian Husky is a hard working dog that is known for its “loud-mouth” behavior and occasionally destructive attitude, whereas the Chow Chow is a breed that is known for their stubborn, difficult to handle demeanor. These traits can be handled and toned down, though the Chusky is a canine best suited to experienced dog owners who are able to train and handle large breed dogs that have strong independent personalities. These hybrids can have a loyal, friendly persona and if trained well can make great companions for families with younger kids and other animals in the home. They may be cautious around strangers and can demonstrate a slight sense of protecting one's home. These hybrids can suffer from separation anxiety and may have the tendency to destroy household goods like pillows and bedding should they be left alone for too long.

Chusky Activity Requirements

These dogs are high energy dogs as they stem from active, working parent breeds. Due to their lineage, it is recommended that these dogs have large enclosed backyards to play in. They should be walked at least 3 times a day and should have free play time with other dogs. Activity needs can be met through running, off-leash park visits and doggy play groups to increase socialization and to expend energy. He may enjoy agility courses and  flyball competitions, and of course, obedience training should always be a part of his week. The Chusky is not recommended for apartment living - he needs a large home, an active family, and plenty of mental and physical stimulation in order for him to be happy.

She is the greatest dog, she has been the easiest to train as far as safety and general commands and is the funniest and sweetest dog I have ever had. She is so loving and is great with kids, animals and anyone who visits. She has that "husky" talking thing and tries to communicate, mostly with her eyes but if that doesn't work, will whine you into whatever she wants. Very much a diva and must have layers of pillows to sleep on. Will eat anything I eat, anything, except lemons. If she wants something, she will just start doing tricks, one after the other until she gets what she wants. Very protective as well. No one messes with what is hers or ours.

he's the class clown, his personality is out of the world he can make you laugh even on the worse days. he can be more stubborn than my chow-chow if he doesn't want to do something and finding ways to convince him he wants to do it can be challenging at times. Shane is a very large Chusky standing 33inches at his shoulders & weighs 105 lbs still growing. he hates being left home and thinks he should be allowed everywhere a person is. When he misbehaves and he knows when he's done wrong he is like a child an will look you straight in the face with I didn't do it look. he will push his bounds to the limit testing you the minuet your back is turned he will try to get what hes been told no about . He is beyond smart and hiding his toy or anything you don't want him to have must be done out of his sight. He has gone as far as getting on the desk chair to reach to top bookcase shelf for his ball. watched me open the front door next I see him with his mouth on the door knob turning it he did get it opened and the outside gate he flips up the latch faster than I can thankfully he doesn't have thumbs so a lock works well on it. when he get a scolding he will pout for hours he hates when mommy is mad and will do something goofy to get me to laugh. despite his size XXL he is a gentle giant and still wants to be that 15 lb puppy on your lap. He is great with other dogs big small he doesn't care he is his chow-chow sister's personal assist dog as she is blind & 85 % deaf hes very gentle with her making sure she doesn't bump into things or miss a stair. he loves being with his human & meeting people he is careful with children but because of his size is never left alone with them as he could accidentally knock one down. He was a shelter dog and adopted in june 2019 he has come a long way in 6 mos. daily training, exercise, a affection have shown he his a remarkable mixed breed with endless possibilities of what he is capable of. he is working on becoming a certified therapy dog with service dog certification to come after. He is my best friend , my protector and my big baby Chusky and I am his friend his teacher together we are everything a dog & person could want a family.
