Jack Russell Terrier
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
Welsh Cojack, Cacki, Corki

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi and Jack Russell Terrier are two of the most popular canine varieties hailing from Britain — so you can see why dog breeders thought to create a hybrid from the pair of them.

The end result? The Cojack, a friendly companion that inherits their parents’ stamina and trainability. That’s not to say they’re just working dogs — life with this hybrid is sure to be full of laughs and good times.

In this breed profile of the Cojack, you’ll learn that:

  • A Cojack dog needs at least an hour’s activity a day
  • They can be prone to deafness and Patellar Luxation
  • This is a good dog for families with small children and other pets
  • There’s not much variation in appearance when it comes to the Cojack

Cojack Breed Overview

There are a few reasons why both the Corgi and Jack Russell Terrier have made the transition from working dogs to companion animals — not only are they all-around good company, they don’t ask for much by way of maintenance.

Grooming is fairly straightforward due to their short coats, while their exercise demands aren’t overly excessive. Training is generally considered to be easy, something for which hunters and farmers prized the parent breeds.

Although they’re far from the loudest dogs, it must be mentioned that some Cojacks have a tendency to bark, as is common in smaller breeds. Others don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time, either.

Just like humans, dogs can expect to suffer illnesses or injuries throughout their lives — taking out a pet insurance policy makes this less stressful when it happens.

Cojack Breed History

The Cojack breed has emerged from the recent trend for hybrid dogs. Although crossbreeding canines will have happened for hundreds of years, the practice really took off in the 1980s, especially with the creation of the Labradoodle.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the Corgi and Jack Russell mix became a more commonplace hybrid. However, we do know a lot more about each side of the Cojack family tree, which is useful to know for understanding their personality.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi can be traced back almost a thousand years. Some believe the breed to be a gift from the fairies, who used to ride around on the back of them — this explains the saddle and harness marks on the dog’s body, so the story goes.

Another origin story — perhaps a little more grounded in reality — states the breed developed from herding dogs that Flemish weavers brought over to Wales in the 12th century. Over the ensuing centuries, the Corgi was put to work as a herding dog, something that their short legs and solid build made them well-suited to.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi had become well-known as a companion animal by the 20th century, but their popularity was to receive a massive boost in the 1930s when King George VI gifted a Corgi to his daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. This marked the beginning of Queen Elizabeth II’s lifelong devotion to the breed.

The Jack Russell Terrier descends from a long line of small dogs favored by hunters for their ability to catch small prey. This specific terrier variety takes their name from Jack Russell, a priest, fox hunter and dog breeder based in southern England.

It’s said that Russell purchased a terrier that caught his eye while he was studying at Oxford University. That dog was named Trump, and Russell sought to use him as a stud to create a new type of fox terrier that was courageous and nimble, but not overly aggressive.

Jack Russell Terriers escaped standardization for a long time, with the breed only receiving official recognition from The Royal Kennel Club (RKC) in 2016 — American Kennel Club (AKC) standards for the Russell Terrier were set in 2012, too.

However, Jack Russell Terriers had won plenty of admirers around the world before this point, mostly for their tenacity when at work and affability when at play. This was why there were many local groups set up dedicated to the breed before the AKC and RKC welcomed them onto their books.

It’s also why the breed was a familiar presence on screen. Who could forget Eddie, Martin Crane’s intelligent companion on Frasier, or the eponymous dog on the children’s TV series Wishbone?

Cojack Breed Appearance

Many hybrid breeds can vary wildly in appearance, but the Cojack seems to have settled into a distinctive look of its own.

The Cojack dog is medium in size, with a long body and short legs. They normally take on a Corgi’s ears, which are tall and erect, although the ears can fold over at the top with a small minority — just as they do with a Jack Russell Terrier. Eyes are typically brown and noses are black more often than not.

The coat is short, dense and wiry, and can come in a variety of colorways — brown, black, white, red or pied are the most common. When it comes to markings, a Cojack might have patches like a Jack Russell or the trademark saddle shape and white blaze on the forehead associated with the Corgi.

Cojack Breed Maintenance

While some smaller dogs have long coats that need hours of parents’ attention, this isn’t the case with the Cojack dog. Brushing once or twice a week should keep their coat shiny and free of dirt. They’re not big shedders, but prospective parents with allergies should be aware the hybrid isn’t hypoallergenic.

Bathing isn’t necessary very often — only when they get particularly dirty or work up a serious smell. Nails should be trimmed every few weeks or when you hear them clicking against the floor. Ears should also be regularly cleaned and dried off to prevent infections, while teeth also need to be brushed several times a week.

When it comes to exercise, the Cojack needs more exercise than many other dogs of a similar size. This is because both parent breeds were prodigious workers at one point in time. As such, parents should aim for an hour’s activity a day — this can take the form of playtime and training as well as walks (around nine miles a week should suffice).

Cojack Health Risks

Like all dogs, there are some health conditions to which a Corgi and Jack Russell Mix is more predisposed — these are usually ones that tend to befall both parent breeds, as well. Here are the main ones that parents should be aware of:

Patellar Luxation

This is a joint issue that’s more commonly spotted in smaller breeds, like the Cojack. In layman’s terms, ‘Patellar’ refers to the kneecap and ‘Luxation’ is another word for

dislocation — essentially, a dog’s knee pops out of the joint frequently, leading to a distinctive hopping motion and plenty of pain.

As a fairly common ailment, vets can often successfully treat it, usually through a combination of medication, leg braces or surgery.

Heart Problems

There are two heart conditions more likely to affect the Cojack. One is Dilated Cardiomyopathy, which is when the heart muscle becomes enlarged and weak. This results in reduced ability to pump blood, arrhythmia and valve leakage.

For parents, this will manifest itself in various symptoms linked to lethargy, be that difficulty exercising, excessive panting or weight loss. In latter stages, this can evolve into a loss of appetite and collapse.

Unfortunately, Dilated Cardiomyopathy has no cure, but a vet can prescribe supplements and medication to alleviate the worst symptoms.

Another cardiovascular disorder sometimes diagnosed in Cojacks is Patent Ductus Arteriosus. This is the second most common congenital heart defect in dogs and is defined by the abnormal development of the ductus arteriosus blood vessel.

This is often diagnosed by a vet during early wellness checks on Cojack puppies and parents will rarely spot symptoms of their own. What they might see are the signs of congestive heart failure as a result of Patent Ductus Arteriosus — this is similar to those of Dilated Cardiomyopathy in that they include weakness, breathing problems and collapse.

If Patent Ductus Arteriosus is caught early enough, a vet will be able to perform surgery that will allow for healthy blood flow. This is a big procedure and a dog will require a long recovery period. However, they can expect to live a normal life once they’re back on their feet.

Deafness

Various types of terrier are prone to congenital deafness, so a Corgi Terrier mix might be unlucky enough to have it in their genes. Parents should be able to spot signs of hearing loss from their dog’s abnormal behavior and a vet can confirm the extent of deafness.

Just as with humans, there’s no known cure for deafness in dogs and the only thing parents can do is adapt to their dog’s inability to hear commands — that might mean learning hand signals for commands or using a vibrating collar.

Many health conditions are easier to treat if they’re spotted as early as possible — this is where the regular testing and examinations included in a wellness plan really come into their own.

What to feed a Cojack

For a dog on the smaller end of the scale, Cojacks have a hearty appetite and require a lot of food to replenish their energy levels after long walks. This should be as high quality as possible — this means plenty of protein from named meats and all the essential vitamins and minerals.

Avoid recipes that use bulky carb ingredients in large quantities, as well as vaguely named meat derivatives. Read our guide to understanding the ingredients on a dog food label here.

Cojack Temperament

It’s hard to speak with certainty when it comes to hybrid breeds, but it’s a safe bet that a Cojack will be energetic, intelligent and eager to please their parents. This usually makes training a painless process, providing it’s started at an early age — the same can be said for socialization. The innate herding desires of a Corgi or Terrier can sometimes shine through, although this can be corralled into playtime or training.

Generally, Cojacks are friendly animals, making them suitable for households that feature small children or other pets. You’ll probably be pleased to hear that they’re not known to be excessive barkers — that’s not to say they’re completely silent, especially when confronted with something or someone new.

A wonderful rescue dog who chose us. He is mostly happy but has severe skin problems. He is covered in various cysts some loook like blackberries. He has a large fHatty lump on his left side below hisshoulder. He is stone deaf and both eyeshave large cataracts. He has to take antihistamines daily. As well as cysts Paddy has what looks like black tar on his skin His depth perception is poor. He seems to have a problem with right hip jointand his lower legs are just bone. He is a very fussy eater I am worried about his future when he will have a dark silent world. We could get one cataract fixed but are not sure he is up to the op

Our Cojack came to us through a rescue group in MN. He is a tripod due to abuse. We consider ourselves very lucky to have found him. He rarely barks and we have had a fairly easy time training him. Some separation anxiety like the article mentioned. He is always waiting at the door for our return. He has been a wonderful addition to our family.

We love our little fur boy, although he can be a challenge at times! We definitely have to spend a lot of time training and working on appropriate doggie manners. He is very eager to please us,loves his training treats but has a tendency to show aggression and is very possessive of "his" belongings-toys,bed and food. We are constantly working on his aggressive nature and it's a slow process with slow progress. He's alright with our young daughter but I wouldn't recommend young children with this breed, sadly. A very picky eater who prefers wet diet over a dry diet. He's very, very affectionate and prefers being a lap dog with your hands constantly moving in petting motion. I've never seen so much energy in a dog!! He sure can run and run and he loves to run and play. Toys are a must with our boy! He loves bones, and anything that squeaks. He can be destructive, chewing many things to shreds, but never his toys!! We love our boy, even if he challenges us from time to time. He is a great dog and keeps us active.

Rosie came to us here in Massachusetts as a rescue from South Carolina. She is very smart and also a bit stubborn. She loves chasing squirrels and birds. When walking she always has her nose to the ground, finding and following scent trails. At night she jumps into the bed and burrows under the comforter and stays there until late morning. She is standoffish to strangers, but friendly to those she knows. All in all, she is a funny and very sweet dog. And so-o cute!

I love my little Delilah, but she is a ball of energy. She is the smallest dog I have, weighing in at 22lbs, but she can keep up with my bloodhound/pyr mix no problem. She is easily excitable and very protective. I can take her places, but she tends to get nervous. She is definitely a lapdog and has to be next to me as much as possible. One of her favorite activities is herding my cats all over the yard.

Very loving. Interacts well with other leashed dogs by ignoring them. Tried to herd children as a puppy by nipping at heels but was easily distracted by this. Chose our second dog after the loss of our older dog. He will let you know verbally if he is upset which is almost unheard of. He is definitely my husband's dog. He does interact well with cats.

Bear came to us as a rescue at 6 months old. He was easily trained. He is very loving and protective and does not share his toys with our older dog who has no interest in the toys but Bear does not want the other dog anywhere around his toys. He is full of energy all the time and is very vocal and shares his opinion, loves to swim and dig and hide his bones. Very smart breed, he does tend to herd me around when I have pants on.

Got Lilly from the rescue that I volunteer at (surrendered by her previous owner who wanted a puppy). This cute but sometimes stubborn girl came to me house-trained. She was quick to adapt to my household. She loves lounging in her bed or on the chair, but is energetic when we go for our walks (2 long walks daily), and will lunge at birds, squirrels and other dogs. And boy can she jump! Will jump 4-5 feet when I arrive home. Good thing I have a 6 foot fence in my yard. She is very loyal, and has followed me around the house from the day I brought her home. A great dog!

A very fun little guy with a personality the size of Texas! He's energetic in short spurts and will cuddle when tired out. It doesn't take much to tire him out, just maybe 45 minutes of play or a short jog around the neighborhood. Very well behaved in public, although jumpy at times like a Jack Russell. Still working on that! Very friendly with new people but will warning bark when someone new comes to the door. He watches the house while we are gone and is surprisingly good at keeping us safe!

My Cojack has been one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He’s extremely loyal and loving, and loves to meet people and explore new places. He is territorial at home; he does bark at other dogs around our apartment complex, but he makes friends very easily at the dog park. He does tend to shed quite a bit, but I have no problems using a lint roller before work. (He loves to be brushed!) He likes to snuggle in my bed, he prefers to burrow under the blankets; sometimes he prefers to sleep on his own in his crate. He’s very intelligent and has made up his own gestures for telling me he needs to go out. He’s very distractable, and has the worst case of ADHD I’ve ever seen in a dog... everything can make him forget when he’s about to drop a deuce.. Overall, I love this dog more than anything, he is my best friend and I have enjoyed knowing him and learning about him. I don’t feel like Cojacks would make a good companion for anyone who cannot or will not go outside, they love to run. Mine loves to chase and be chased; and loves to go to 5k races and running trails. They can be calm and lazy, but they need to burn the excess energy.

Miso is very lovely. She tugs, a lot, when we are walking her. She's so friendly someone could probably just dognap her and she wouldn't care. She works well with the kids in the house, and she recognizes when she does something wrong. However, she has separation anxiety (probably from her shelter days) and legit never tires. She also loves being the "dominant" dog in the park when she's the smallest one. Like, calm down Miso, you don't have to be the alpha all the time! However, I love her nontheless! She's adorable.

Considering his age domino has slowed down considerably to that when he was younger. When we got him as a rescue at 6 years old he had suffered abuse and was wary of older males, in a house of children aged 7 to 14 and a single mother this didn’t cause too many problems however over time he did warm up to males after a few years of reassurance and love. It is only as he has aged that he has started to slow down and his coat grow thicker, I say slow down but he still enjoys running around when he feels like it even if it isn’t as often. He is extremely intelligent and always has been learning even in old age, extremely friendly just not with other pets and he has a huge personality.

I received him from a family whom said he was a chi/Pom mix. However after him growing older And actions I knew this was not correct. Per the vet, I recently discovered that he is cojack. Which explains a lot. Arlo loves a lot. He enjoys attention. If you pet him, you can’t stop until he’s ready. He has major separation anxiety. He loves to chew and destruct shoes and stuffed animals and anything. He will chew any toy until it is demolished. He loves me and is my protector. He is extremely energetic as much as a couch potato. He has been harder to train. He is a beggar and loves to eat real food....he is extremely nervous In the car but loves to have the window down if he’s in one. He is a very nervous dog too, when we go anywhere he’s a shaker. All in all, he needs lots of attention and love and that’s what we do. He does have some Bit of an aggression in him as well, mainly he thinks is playing however he gets more rough than necessary. He sheds a lot, it is not minimal. He is extremely funny at times and can be quite stupid occasionally but it’s funny. He does love chasing birds and squirrels, and has brought me some 😬 he enjoys following a scent as well. He is not a fan of water if he is in it or splashed by it. I love him though and he has been a blessing.

Going on walks is Tula's absolute favorite thing ever. Being that we adopted her at 7 years old, it's hard to know what habits she picked up from previous owners and what is natural for her breed. On walks, she has to sniff EVERYTHING and everywhere and pees frequently to mark her territory. She is extremely territorial, sometimes excessively, but she is receptive to being told off when she steps over boundaries. She is very loyal and will follow you to the ends of the earth, but she does seem like she wants to be pack leader and lead and pull during walks so that's something we're working on. But she's so well-behaved - for example, although we she clearly doesn't like it, she doesn't fight or resist baths. She is great with dogs her size or smaller and absolutely loves running around with them at dog parks. Bigger dogs are a huge no-no - she'll start showing her teeth and will growl and bark at them as if they're a threat to her. We live in a 500 sq. ft. apartment and it is no problem at all for Tula. She pretty much sleeps all day, exhausted from our long walks, or is staring out our juliette balcony. She doesn't shed too excessively so the apartment isn't covered in fur. All-in-all, I would recommend this breed. We felt lucky that she was available at a shelter considering how good this breed is! Biggest issue with her seems to be a consistent trait of the breed - she absolutely hates being left alone. She'll cry when you leave and then be absolutely ecstatic when you return. But she does great in cars so if I'm going somewhere that she can come, I usually take her along!

Oh, how much can you love a dog? The answer is somewhere in the line of "I would die for her". She is truly my best friend.

She is very stubborn and doesn't come when called or behave on a leash. But she's friendly, affectionate and smart.

The most loving dog you could ever imagine. She has great amount of energy and uses it to show her love to all people and dogs she meets, no matter what age and size they are. She learns readily but might show her temper from time to time and pretend not to understand you. The best thing is to see her cuddling with your arm in the mornings and feel so much love.

I adopted him over a year ago from the big dog ranch rescue in Loxahatchee Florida. He was completely housebroken. Obedience training was swift and he is off leash. He's very protective of my 90 year old mother, and will become aggressive, which I love. What a keeper

"Bubby", as he is affectionately called, is smart, funny and a great addition to our family. He was adopted from our local shelter and was a Street dog but has adapted to home life quite quickly.

I would recommend this breed to anyone with kids or an active couple with no kids,a great family dog. He requires mental stimulation as well as at least 2 hours of activity a day (1 hour of that being very intense), don't underestimate the JR half energy requirements. other than that he is a very well behaved, never destructive & never barks indoors. He was quite the hand-full prior to age 1 but seemed to really get on the same team after that. On weekends we take him on walks that sometimes last over 6 hours (he loves it) and let him rest on Sundays. He requires affection in the evenings as he is winding down (wants to be part of the pack). I would recommend training this breed to be off-leash (where safe) as this will allow them burn off energy and helps with mental stimulation as the Jack half likes to be to feel independent and make decisions on the field. A bit of a picky eater will not eat only dry food, we add either a spoon of canned wet or boiled meat (chicken, pork, lamb) to his dry food. Might be unique to my experience but I think the sites recommendation of 45 mins of activity is not enough and you would end up with a frustrated/destructive dog unless you have young kids that will provide your pet with mental stimulation.

We found Stella on Christmas Eve in a cardboard box at a dump site and she’s been the best gift we’ve ever “gotten”. She is very energetic and loves going on hikes and long walks. However, she also knows how to have a lazy day. She’s the smartest dog I’ve ever met. She learns words and phrases after only a few tries, even at her age. She even picks up words we don’t teach her. She is very dog-selective, only lots of socialization helps her adjust to new dogs, she’s an only dog in the house. She’s highly protective of me, to the point where nobody can touch me before I wake up, even my husband who she has known her entire life. She doesn’t bite due to aggression, only nips during playtime and she knows when she’s gone too far. She loves people food, especially BBQ, and she sleeps in the bed like a little person. She even has little tantrums when she can’t get comfy. She does have seizures bi-weekly, but we don’t know what specifically causes them. We think something about her kidneys or liver, Pedigree dog food made them 100% worse. Even when she’s pre and post seizure she’s calm and knows what to do. We take her to the groomer every 3 months for bath and coat trim, she’s got husky fur or something, super duper soft but likes to shed when we let it grow long. Her kisses are the best and I’ve never been so attached to a dog. She’s a one-of-a-kind partner and has all our love.

Winston does not actually belong to me, but my brother. Wonston is a tri-color male cojack and LOVES being with his people. He is always super happy but he always seems to start barking during the worst times. Like while watching a movie, or on a call, etc. He doesn't really have any health issues. Perfectly healthy. He eats everything though so maybe there is something wrong with him... We adopted him for Christmas in 2020 and have had many memories together. Winston was such a good boy that we are now getting 2 more puppies from the same breeder. Their names are Comet and Merlin. Comet is going to become mine and Merlin will be my mom's. To summarize, cojacks are an AMAZING dog breed (Mutt) that I have ever owned. (I have also owned a pit bull, miniature schnauzer, black lab/great dane)

He is an absolute star, he's very loving and excitable. Wants to be friends with everyone person or animal. He is very talkative especially in a morning when you wake up, he likes to say good morning and has morning cuddles and fusses. He knows when to settle with a simple command. He's a very fast learner and I wouldn't ask for a better dog. He was house trained very quickly too. He now barks at the back door if he needs to go out to donhis business and when he's off his lead, once called he returns to us. We as a daily of 4 love him very much.

Annie came to us from a rescue center and is believed to be a welsh puppy farm dog she is now very happy at home!. Cheeky, loyal, protective & sometimes stubbon her personality always keeps us on our toes!truly a big dog in a small package!, her colours and coat are visually stunning and everyone comments on her appearance she is a VERY attractive little dog!.Her corgi traits some times make her willful and because of her rough life until we got her(age 8 years!) her health is a bit troublesome as she has digestive issues and spinal troubles! but she is now enjoying her retirement with us no longer being bread half to death and treated cruelly! she is now fully loved and has the best life we can give her! I like to think she knows this! she is slowly coming round to human contact and affection! and is learning to play a little with us!- a bit like a 9 year old puppy she starting to push her boundrys and come out of her shell! which is lovely! she is with us for the rest of her days and will always be loved and cared for to the best of our ability! thats all they want really isnt it!

Question

How do I groom my cokack, he is a welsh corgi and Jack Russell mix but his due is thick like a corgi, his last groomer shaved him very short and he loves it. We live in Florida and the temps are hi, I need to shave him but I’m afraid. He I a rescue and is a biter. His groomer has not been available due to personal reasons. I would love to learn to do it myself but I’m scared because he gets really aggressive and bears his teeth. Please advise
