Social, loving, and loyal, the Copica was developed from two parent breeds – the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cockapoo. The Copica's history is vague and not well-documented. This playful canine can resemble either breed. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi's original purpose was to serve as a herding dog. The Cockapoo enjoys being able to be a family companion and is eager to please. The Copica inherits traits from both parent breeds and is generally friendly, affectionate, and intelligent. His moderate energy levels require daily exercise to maintain his health. An average urban home with a warm climate would benefit the Copica.

Copica Breed History

The Copica was developed from the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cockapoo. While the origins are unknown, the Copica is a breed created for families. It is important to be able to review both parent breeds to understand the Copica's background. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi originated from the Spitz family. In the 1100s, Flemish weavers were responsible for the development of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The breed's original purpose was to herd sheep and ponies and to drive cattle by biting at their heels. In 1926, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was brought to the show ring for the first time. Around the same time, the breed was beginning to be distinguished by its counterpart – the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Queen Elizabeth II is a fan of this affectionate breed, which led to a popularity surge when they were seen everywhere with her. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was considered an effective working dog which still rings true today. In 1934, the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. The Cockapoo is one of the oldest designer dogs in existence, leading back to the 1960s. The original litter was known to be intelligent, odorless, and low-shedding. His easy-going and eager personality became a favorite among families. Since then, the Cockapoo has been working on establishing breed standards in order to create consistent traits. The Cockapoo grew in popularity throughout the years and has not stopped. In 1999, the Cockapoo Club of America was established in order to create a breeding consistency. In 2004, the American Cockapoo Club was founded in order to breed Cockapoos to their roots. In 1999, the North American Cockapoo Registry was created to establish the Cockapoo as a viable breed.  The breed is not officially recognized by the AKC.

Copica Breed Appearance

The Copica is a small hybrid dog developed from the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cockapoo. His coat is dense and can vary between short to medium length depending on the traits he inherits. His silky, non-water-repellent coat may require some light trimming. Colors can range between black, tan, white, black and white, and black and tan. It is said that the breed can vary between three different coat types: long-coated with a fluffy face, medium-length with a non-fluffy face, or a short-length coat. The Copica is sturdy-boned, stocky, and carries his tail over his rump. His medium-length ears are floppy. Brown eyes adorn a cheerful face.

Copica Breed Maintenance

The Copica is not considered a hypoallergenic breed and does shed moderately. Daily brushing is recommended with a rubber curry brush if he has a short coat. If he has a medium-length coat, a firm bristle brush can be used. The Copica is not known to drool or have any significant odors. If an odor is detected, check the ears for bacterial buildup due to moisture. If the inside of the ears look dark or black, mites may be present. This lovable breed can be bathed every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain cleanliness though don't overdo it; overbathing can lead to  excessive production of oils in the skin. Small breeds can be prone to poor dentition and teeth decay - brush them daily to keep on top of plaque and to observe loose teeth.

Copica Temperament

With an intelligent and eager-to-please personality, the Copica is a curious breed. He will run up to you when he hears your car. He will await your arrival each day after work. He will accompany your children through the yard. This affectionate canine has moderate energy levels and will be eager to partake in whatever is going on.  The Copica is great for first-time owners and has a kind nature that appeals to children. His lovable nature will attract other animals and his friendliness will extend to them as well. Early training and encouragement will ensure your dog is comfortable with everyone at all times. The playful disposition of the Copica makes him an excellent companion for young and old. The Copica fares best in an average urban environment with a warm climate; dress him with a sweater if walking on extra cold days.

Copica Activity Requirements

The Copica is a moderately active breed that is eager to please his family. His energy levels demand about 30 to 40 minutes of activity daily. A temperate climate is suitable for the Copica as long as he is dressed properly for walks and playtime at the dog park on cold, blustery days. He will love a home with a fenced yard but as with all breeds of dog, supervision is always important. The Copica will enjoy obedience classes; his friendly nature and cute looks will make him a class favorite while giving him the training he needs to be an all-around outgoing dog.
