Dach-Griffon Breed History

It is unknown where the Dach-Griffon originated from. It is believed that the breed was developed as a result of breeders wanting to create healthier dogs. This trend started about two decades ago and has been seen in the creation of many hybrid breeds. The Dach-Griffon originated from the Dachshund and the Brussels Griffon. The Dachshund is a breed that originated in Germany around the 1400s. His name means “badger hound” which is a reference to the breed hunting prey in the same style as badgers. The Dachshund was known to run in packs for boar hunting and was a sufficient breed for the task. In the 1800s, the Dachshund was bred to be a companion dog. In 1885, this small canine was important to America but was not favored due to his ties to Germany around World War I. Post World War II, the Dachshund began to grow in popularity and was known for to its bold nature and desire to snuggle with his family. The Brussels Griffon originated from Belgium, where they were bred to hunt vermin in the city stables. Throughout the years, this canine was bred with the English Toy Spaniel, the Pug, and the Affenpinscher. The Brussels Griffon was bred to be lively, intelligent, and expressive. In 1880, the breed was first shown at the Brussels Exhibition. The spunky breed became known as a companion due to its lovable nature. In the movie “As Good as it Gets”, there is a Brussels Griffon that receives the spotlight.

Dach-Griffon Breed Appearance

The Dach-Griffon is a hybrid breed that was developed from the Dachshund and the Brussels Griffon. This breed does not have a standard and will vary depending on the litter. Some Dach-Griffons end up with smooth and short coats while most result in a dense, rough, wiry, and water-repellent coat. The Dach-Griffon has a longer than tall body that is similar to the Dachshund. His small build is effective for herding. His eyes will usually be dark brown. His coat will range anywhere between black, brown, red, and tan. He will most often have a scruffy beard and may resemble the Brussels Griffon. A mischievous expression is typical for this breed.

Dach-Griffon Breed Maintenance

The Dach-Griffon is not generally considered a hypoallergenic breed and will shed minimally. However, its parent breed – the Brussels Griffon – is accepted as a hypoallergenic breed. There is a possibility that your Dach-Griffon may end up being hypoallergenic. Brushing is recommended daily for 10 minutes with a rubber curry brush to remove dead hairs. Your scruffy pup may require some light grooming to maintain his coat. It is recommended to bring your dog to be professionally groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. The groomer can also check the nails for trimming but you may have clip them now and then on your own if they do not wear down somewhat between groomer's visits. Daily dental care will include brushing your Dach-Griffon's teeth with a veterinary approved toothpaste. Take a look inside the ears now and then also, to make sure they are clean.

Dach-Griffon Temperament

The Dach-Griffon’s exact temperament can vary depending on which dominant traits he inherits. Generally, this breed is described as affectionate and loving, and yearns for your attention. Cuddling is a must for this breed as it will bring out his happy side. The Dach-Griffon is a social dog that loves to remain close with his family, including children that have been taught how to interact with a dog. Don’t mistake this breed for being lazy or inactive – he will chase after small animals if left unattended. This lively breed may be stubborn to train and require much patience to teach him effective lessons. Early training and socialization must be provided in order for him to welcome other dogs, animals, and strangers. Your dog can learn to distinguish the difference between welcomed visitors and intruders. This upbeat canine has moderate energy levels and will need daily exercise to meet his requirements.

Dach-Griffon Activity Requirements

Your Dach-Griffon has a moderate energy level that will require daily exercise. He can range between a relaxed dog who loves to cuddle and a frisky canine who needs to expend energy. Give him at least 40 minutes of quality exercise per day and he'll be as content as can be. Fun outings are what this hybrid is looking for so be sure to take him around the block a few times a day so he can meet and greet the neighbors. He'll love the backyard too, but be certain to supervise him so he does not make an escape. Apartment living is possible as long as he does not have to climb too many stairs. Be sure to visit the park often as he does not do well if left idle.

I was very lucky to adopt Toby from our local shelter. He was my 3rd attempt to adopt a small breed because they get snatched up quickly. He’s been such a joyful addition to our home and the most excellent, affectionate companion. He’s a healthy dog with a great personality. I’ve loved many dogs in my life, but I think I love him the best of all. He is perfect!
