Dobie-Basset

This history of this designer dog is unknown, as they were recently created. However, since the hybrid was bred from the Doberman Pinscher and Basset Hound, their history technically begins with them. The Doberman Pinscher dog was found in Germany later on in the 1800s. The breed was actually developed by a tax collector by the name of Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann. This, of course, is where the breed got its name. Karl had the goal of creating a dog who could protect him while he visited dangerous neighborhoods, as well as intimidate people who wanted to evade tax payments. He had access to the local animal shelter, and therefore could have used a variety of dogs to create this breed. Since he did not keep proper documentation on the breeds that he used, it is unknown exactly how this dog came to be. Some breeds that were thought to have been used were short haired mixed-breed Shepherd dogs, Black and Tan Terriers, German Pinschers and the Rottweiler. There is also the possibility of the Beauceron, Weimaraner, Greyhound as well as the Black and Tan Manchester Terrier. The breed quickly gained popularity, and could be found in Europe, Russia, the United States and South Africa by the 1920s. Today, this breed is known all around the world. Basset Hounds were discovered earlier on in the beginning of the 1500s. It was the Friars of the Abbey of St. Hubert who found these dogs in Northern France. They were aiming to create a slow moving and low set breed that was very smart but could be used in hunting on foot as opposed to on horseback. Deer, pheasants, fox, rabbit, squirrels, raccoons and badgers were all prey for this hunting dog. Wild boar and wolf were also thought to be hunted by these dogs. Bloodhounds are definitely part of this breed’s ancestry, and gave them their keen sense of smell.These dogs would do well hunting in packs or individually, and became popular among the French from the 16th to 19th centuries. One pair of a type of Basset Hound was imported to England in the year of 1866, and had a litter of puppies one year later. However, the breed did not gain popularity until 1874, when a dog of this breed named Model was imported and used in a selective breeding program. The popularity of the breed was increased when they were brought into the royal kennels of Queen Alexandra.
