The Dogue Brasileiro is a loyal and courageous hybrid that is a mix between a Bull Terrier and a Boxer. This is a large breed that makes an excellent guard dog and family pet, loves children, and gets along well with other pets if socialized early on. The Dogue Brasileiro averages about 22 inches tall and weighs about 80 pounds. They have a hard, dense, shiny coat that is usually brown, black, brindle, tan, or red with white patches on the chest, face, tail, and feet. They are easy to train and will not give you as much trouble as many breeds because they are so intelligent and eager to please.

Dogue Brasileiro Breed History

The Boxer was originally discovered in Germany in the 1800s being used as a guard dog as well as to bait bulls and for dog fighting until these sports were illegal. There are many different beliefs about the Boxer’s history such as being a descendent of the Dogue de Bordeaux and that they were a relative to the Tibetan Mastiff from the 16th century. However, many people agree that the Boxer is related to the Bulldog and the ancient Roman breed, the Molossus. In addition to its other uses, the Boxer was also good at hunting stag and boar as seen in 16th century tapestries. No matter which history you believe, most agree that the Boxer came from mixing the Danziger and Brabanter Bullenbeisser, Mastiffs, and Bulldogs. By the 1900s, the Boxer was becoming popular as a show dog, family pet, and were the first police and military dogs. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1904, won their first championship in 1915, and now they are the 10th most popular breed in America. The Bull Terrier originated in England in the 1800s and was originally used for dog fighting. Once that sport became illegal, they were used for herding, hunting rats and mice, and as a guard dog. The Bull Terrier is a mix of a Bulldog and Old English Terrier, which is now extinct. At one point, they were bred with white English Terriers, white Bulldogs, and Dalmatians to make a white Bull Terrier. This dog became popular as a companion to the men and got the nickname of White Cavalier when they rode with English gentries in the carriages. The breed is well known for its large head that is shaped like a football. They were accepted by the AKC in 1885 and are now the 57th most popular breed in America.

Dogue Brasileiro Breed Appearance

The Dogue Brasileiro is a strong and muscular dog with a well-balanced and athletic body. Their coat is short, silky, dense, and hard and can come in just about any color but is usually black, brindle, tan, brown, white, red, or a combination of these and they usually have white patches on their chest, face, feet, ears, and tail. They range from 51 to 95 pounds and stand about 20 to 24 inches tall on average. The Dogue Brasileiro has a very large head with a wide jaw, floppy ears, short, stocky legs, and a medium length tail that may be docked.

Dogue Brasileiro Breed Maintenance

Their coat is easy to care for and they pretty much groom themselves for the most part. All they need is a simple brushing with a soft bristle brush a couple of times a week to prevent excessive shedding and increase circulation for healthier skin. Do not bathe them unless absolutely necessary or it will dry out their skin. Clean their ears with a cotton ball once a week, looking for redness, mites, or built up earwax. In addition, you should trim their nails when needed. It is also recommended that you brush their teeth a few times a week with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste made specially for dogs.

Dogue Brasileiro Temperament

This breed is good with kids and other pets but may need to be socialized early to be trusted around small children and cats. They are excellent guard dogs and will make sure no strangers come in your yard or home unannounced so be sure to place a Beware of Dog sign on your home as a warning. However, the Dogue Brasileiro has been bred to have an even temperament with those who do not provoke them and will not become aggressive unless necessary. They are also easy to train because they are fast learners who are eager to please you.

Dogue Brasileiro Activity Requirements

This breed needs a moderate amount of activity every day to keep them from becoming bored or anxious. At least 45 to 60 minutes per day is recommended. They can become lazy and get overweight if they do not get enough exercise and have a tendency to develop bad habits like chewing on furniture and barking excessively. Some activities that your Dogue Brasileiro may enjoy include hunting, swimming, hiking, going for a walk or jog around your neighborhood, a trip to the local dog park, and playing fetch. This breed is also excellent at fly ball and competing in agility or obedience training.

Olive is a 1st generation Dogue Brasileiro. A fatastic mistake.... when a purebred English Bull Terrier ripped through a fence to reach a purebred Boxer female. I am so thankful for this "mistake" as she is the most amazing dog I've ever had. She loves all people, especially children even though we don't have any nor was she exposed to children until about a year old. She is naturally very protective and seems to have developed a keen sense for danger (perfect for living in South Africa), she runs around our properties perimeter growling on command without being ever being taught this. She is very active and quite a bit ball/toy obsessed. I would however not recommend her breed to anyone who will not take the time or effort to train, socialize and play with their dog. She loves attention but is also quite independent. This breeds high energy levels may be considered high maintenance by those who think that a dog is only there for protection or basic company. For us however she is a true member of the family.
