The English Boodle varies in size from a small to medium dog depending on genetics that it inherits from its parent dogs. The Boodle combines the intelligence from the Poodle, with the friendly personality of the English Bulldog. The benefits of the hybrid mix mean that the Poodle genetics can minimise the health problems commonly associated the Bulldog. The English Boodle is an affectionate dog that is ideal with children as it is extremely family oriented. It loves all the attention that you can give it. The silky soft coat and gentle nature combine into an appealing dog that will become a firm member of your family. Often energetic when young, the Boodle mellows in maturity. Training may require your patience as the bull dog stubbornness may become obvious. Kind and firm works best with the English Boodle, as they can resent harsh methods.

English Boodle Breed History

As with many hybrid dogs, the English Boodle’s history is not well documented which leaves only one option, to look at the parent breeds. The Poodle is an ancient breed originally used for hunting water fowl. While the Poodle’s past is debatable with several conflicting theories, one thing that is agreed upon is that they originated in Germany but developed their own unique style in France. It was in the 1400s that they started breeding the smaller Poodles such as the miniature and then the toy, by breeding small Poodles with smaller Poodles – not other small dogs. In France, the standard Poodle was used for duck hunting, the miniature for sniffing out truffles and the toy became the wealthy individuals companion dog. Poodles were popular in circus shows -they were quick to learn new tricks and the gypsies often coiffed their coats into amazing shapes and even dyed the hair to bright new colors, which was the beginning of the Poodle cut. The American Kennel Club registered its first Poodle in 1886. By the mid-1950s, the Poodle was the most popular breed and it held that position for over 20 years. The British Isles was the origin of the English Bulldog who was a descendant of the Asiatic Mastiff. These dogs were used in the blood sport of bull baiting and were given the name bull, because of the sport and the fact that the dog was as solid as a little bull. Back then the English Bulldog was aggressive, courageous and ferocious! The dogs would take on a fully-grown bull attacking from below and aiming for the neck, making it hard for the bull to fight back. Luckily the sport was finally outlawed and the English bulldog we know is far removed from the temperament of his ancestors but they still have a strong determination.

English Boodle Breed Appearance

The English Boodle can vary in appearance depending on the genetics it inherits from the parent dogs. It can veer towards the Poodle with its soft curly coat, or can be boxier in shape with a larger head like the English Bulldog. Or it can be anything in-between! You never really can tell what the hybrid dog will eventually look like or what size it will be. But the Boodle is usually an engaging dog with floppy ears, rounded head and often has the longer muzzle of the Poodle. The legs can be either long and slender, or short and stocky. English Boodle have dark colored eyes with a mischievous expression, and sport a black nose with wideset nostrils. Their tail is long and pointed and can either be curled up over the back, or long and slightly fluffy. With as many versions of the English Boodle as you can imagine, one thing remains constant and that is their lovely friendly nature.

English Boodle Breed Maintenance

The English Boodle requires a little more maintenance than most dogs because of the Poodle coat. That soft coat needs regular brushing usually every second day to prevent matting. Trimming may be needed for the Poodle coat and bathing when required using a gentle shampoo to maintain softness. The Boodle is prone to skin infections, so the use of natural gentle products is important.  The ears will need regular checking for infection. Eyes will need checking as well and teeth to be brushed. Your English Boodle will love all the attention and will enjoy all the pampering.

English Boodle Temperament

Patient and affectionate, the Boodle is the perfect family pet. They are never aggressive, and are gentle with children. Their willingness to please and their love of attention will keep them glued to your side. The Boodle does not like being left alone for extended periods of time, and can suffer separation anxiety. Socialising your dog from a very early age with visits to the dog park where they can mix with other people and dogs will help overcome their anxiety. The Boodle will bark when visitors arrive at your door and they may be protective of family members but they are gentle by nature. These dogs will get on well with other pets, accepting cats and dogs alike. They respond well to training but with the English Bulldog stubborn streak you may need plenty of patience to get the training right, but a firm hand and a kind voice you will get there. Active when young, they mellow as they age but still need a daily walk. If they don’t get the exercise and they are left alone, they can tend to become destructive – so wear them out and keep them company and you have a dog who is a real companion.

English Boodle Activity Requirements

The English Boodle is a fun dog to walk, they are curious and will enjoy being out with you. The Boodle has loads of energy when young, they will engage in play, chase a ball endlessly, and be the life of the party. At this stage in life they need more time at play or exercise.  But they do mellow when they mature and reach adulthood, becoming quieter and more inclined to sit around as close as they can get to the family. Your lap is theirs, where they will revel in all the attention. Obedience training and socialisation are important for the Boodle to achieve a well-rounded dog in personality and behavior.
