Cuddly but bull-headed, the English Bullweiler is often described as a lovable dog with a keen sense of humor. This humorous canine enjoys spending time in the presence of other people as to not feel alone. While he may bark out of boredom, barking can be kept to a minimum with effective training early on in his life. The history of the English Bullweiler is vague and not well-documented. His parent breeds are the English Bulldog and the Rottweiler. Considered a giant breed, this goofy canine does not let his size slow him down. The English Bullweiler weighs an average of 70 to 110 ponds and stands between 18 to 25 inches tall. He makes an outstanding companion as well as an effective guard dog. His short coat makes for an easy grooming routine. This breed possesses moderate energy levels which can be maintained with daily exercise requirements.
The history of the English Bullweiler is vague and not well-documented, which creates for confusion as to its origins. It's just as important to look at the parent breeds – the English Bulldog and the Rottweiler. The English Bulldog can be traced back to the ancient Mastiff due to artwork and writings. However, the breed was developed in England entirely. Originally bred to be aggressive, it was bred to win bull-baiting matches that was believed to result in tenderized meat for the bulls. His physique was bred to be short and stocky which allowed for easy access to the bulls. In 1835, bull-baiting was officially outlawed and the aggressive English Bulldog was left without a task. Breeders worked to modify the breed and reinvent its purpose by breeding out the aggression. The English Bulldog was eventually a docile and friendly dog with an affectionate side. In 1890, the breed was officially recognized by the AKC. The Rottweiler descended from the Romans, who wanted a dog who could drive herds that fed the traveling army. With time, these dogs bred with local dogs in Rottweil, which resulted in a strong breed used by butchers to drive cattle to market. The Rottweiler was used for protection and to guard the butcher's profits. The breed was also used to pull carts and deliver meat and milk. When the Rottweiler nearly disappeared after its purpose was no longer needed, German breeders reinvented the breed and saved it from extinction. In 1931, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Rottweiler.
The English Bullweiler is a giant hybrid breed developed from the English Bulldog and the Rottweiler. His face strongly resembles the Rottweiler with his curious expression. His tail is generally full-length and short-coated. His face will usually inherit the top wrinkles as seen in the English Bulldog. The ears are flappy and hang to the sides of the face. His muzzle is relatively short in length like the Rottweiler. His head is stocky and his body is muscular and athletic. Eyes are dark in nature with a dark nose. His straight legs contain powerful and huge paws. His coat can come in either short and slightly wavy or short and thick. Color combinations can come in black, brown, tan, red, and white.
The English Bullweiler is not considered a hypoallergenic breed and may shed moderately. In order to cut down on shedding, it is important to brush his smooth coat with a rubber curry brush for 10 to 15 minutes per day. Your dog should be bathed every 6 to 8 weeks. Extra attention should be given to his head folds to ensure bacteria does not become trapped. This breed is known to drool moderately which will require cleaning up his mouth a few times a day with a damp cloth. This breed does not generally contain any significant odor. His nails should be kept trimmed or filed every 2 to 3 weeks. Ears should be wiped and cleaned weekly in order to prevent earwax buildup and teeth should be brushed daily to prevent tartar accumulation.
The English Bullweiler is a gentle giant that aspires to be your cuddle partner. He can be goofy with a keen sense of humor. There is never a dull day with your affectionate Bullweiler. Families generally describe this breed as a family companion who is willing to go everywhere with them. Always on the lookout, this alert canine is sure to protect against unwelcome intruders. This breed is excellent with families and young children. Extra precaution should be taken in the presence of younger children due to his massive size. Early training and socialization will teach him boundaries and how to be cautious. The English Bullweiler is a sweetheart with other dogs and small animals. Due to his natural instinct to want to protect, early training is recommended to help him distinguish between friendly and unfriendly strangers. While your English Bullweiler may be bull-headed, he is still capable of learning new techniques with much time and patience. His moderate energy levels will require daily exercise to ensure he is not lounging around all day.
The English Bullweiler contains moderate energy levels which will require about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise per day. This exuberant pup will enjoy swimming, running, walking, and agility. Two walks per day is generally the recommended minimum for optimal health and to prevent boredom. An ideal environment for your English Bullweiler would consist of a large rural home with a fenced-in yard and a warm climate. Due to his massive size, apartment living is not recommended as there may be lack of space for your him to roam and expend energy. Don't leave him on his own often; it is essential to keep him engaged and happy throughout the day.
