English Speagle

Although the Speagle is a relatively new breed with very little information about its origin and history, we do have a lot of details regarding the parent breeds of the English Speagle; the Beagle and the English Toy Spaniel. Looking at these origins and how the dogs came to be can provide some insight as to what the English Speagle may end up like based on its bloodlines. For instance, the much loved Beagle is part of the scent hound family and therefore live by their nose. They were first thought up in the country of England around the year 1475 and were originally thought to have been named after the way that they bay after their prey (Beagle meaning “loudmouth” in French). In the early 19th century, the breed was developed to be the standards that we seem to see today, a small and athletic dog with an astute nose for hunting all kinds of different game. The Beagle is a playful and friendly breed who have been popular for generations, first inching their way into the hearts of Americans around the early 2000’s. Ever since, the Beagle has been used as a family dog, even despite their high hunting drive. The English Toy Spaniel is a little Spaniel breed that probably descended from the ancient companion dogs of Japanese and Chinese Imperial courts. Once this breed made its way to the land of Europe, it wasn’t long before they stole the hearts of everyone who lived there, including the Royalty. Because of this, the breed became known as the King Charles Spaniel (since the both King Charles the first and second were fond of the breed). Despite their popularity, the Toy Spaniel changed slightly after King Charles II died due to the fact that Pugs then became popular. The two breeds were then intermixed from time to time, changing the features of the Toy Spaniel slightly. Today they are used in shows and as companion animals.
