English Toy Spaniel

The English Toy Cocker Spaniel is a hybrid breed that can be a mix of either the English or American Cocker Spaniel and the English Toy Spaniel. These breeds were originally bred as sporting and hunting dogs. However, through the course of history and popularization they became more commonly known as companion animals. The English Toy Cocker Spaniel is a friendly, breed that can have bursts of energy. They require a household that is active and with people within able to keep them company. As both breeds are Spaniels, appearance may only be slightly variable. Your hybrid will have the soft, silky feather coat of the Spaniel line whereas facial structure would depend on which parental lineage it takes on most.

English Toy Cocker Spaniel Breed History

The Cocker Spaniel is a breed of hunting dogs that originated in Spain. Thought to have been around since the 14th century, the name Cocker Spaniel was suggested by their proficiency at flushing woodcock for hunters in the field. This breed was prized for both its elegant appearance and their hunting skills and as such were bred into different categories of land and water spaniels, and were further divided into companion spaniels by size. The Cocker Spaniel was recognized as a sporting breed with the American Kennel Club in 1878. The English Toy Spaniel is a breed that has existed for centuries and enjoyed great popularity with many monarchs, particularly during the 16th century. As the name suggests, the English Toy Spaniel is a breed that simply served as a companion to its owners. These breeds likely originated in Asia as they are thought to be ancestors of the Pekingese and Japanese Chin. Once classified into four colors called the Blenheim, Ruby, Prince Charles and King Charles groups, the American Kennel Club combined the colors into one classification. Registered as the English Toy Spaniel, this dog is part of the Toy Group and first joined the AKC in 1886.

English Toy Cocker Spaniel Breed Appearance

The Cocker Spaniel is a breed that will often have a compact, strong and muscular body. Head is often medium in length and they may have a square-shaped muzzle. Eyes are round, and almond shape. Their coats often are short to medium in length with a lot of feathering towards the ventral aspect of the dog. The English Toy Spaniel has a similar body structure and is quite heavily built as well, they, however, tend to have shorter muzzles and more feathering on their ears. Both parent breeds will have large floppy ears with silky feathering. Due to their similarity, your hybrid may bare features intermediate to their parent breeds. Colors can vary greatly as can the bulging of the eyes and the length of the snout.

English Toy Cocker Spaniel Breed Maintenance

The English Toy Cocker Spaniel is a high maintenance hybrid. Their coats can often get matted and dirty if not groomed often. You will need to take your hybrid to a groomer every 4 to 6 weeks in order to maintain the shape of the coat. For the most part, your hybrid will need their fur trimmed around their ears, eyes, elbows and hind end. Their large floppy ears will need to be cleaned and checked on a regular basis as the fur on the ears often blocks the air circulation to the inner ear. They need their eyes and face cleaned as well because their fur can trap food particles and dirt. As with all dogs, you will need to trim the nails and brush the teeth on a regular basis.

English Toy Cocker Spaniel Temperament

The English Toy Cocker Spaniel is a very sweet, loyal and loving dog. They tend to be quite docile and playful. Because of your hybrid’s gentle demeanor, they make excellent companions for homes with children. These dogs do well with other pets, however, they should be trained from a young age to not chase small animals and be introduced to other pets when they are young. Owners must be realistic though, the prey instinct is pretty ingrained in the English Toy Cocker Spaniel. This hybrid can have separation anxiety and should not be left alone for too long. They often do fairly well when meeting new strangers due to their friendliness.

English Toy Cocker Spaniel Activity Requirements

These hybrids have average activity needs and for the most part, they are very laid back and lazy. When they get their “bursts” of exercise they will need a good place to run or play for 20 to 40 minutes. The English Toy Spaniel itself is not a breed that enjoys swimming, however, the Cocker Spaniel side may make your hybrid more keen on taking a swim. The English Toy Spaniel is an agile breed that loves long runs and walks. The American Cocker Spaniel lineage will encourage your hybrid to take part in retrieving balls and toys for you.
