Protective but loving, the Foxy Russell is a hybrid developed from the Jack Russell Terrier and the Toy Fox Terrier. The Foxy Russell is described as a loving, hyperactive, and curious explorer who loves to dig holes and lead the way. Adventure is this canine’s middle name. He is known to be a nuisance barker which can be minimized with early training. The Foxy Russell’s coat is usually short, harsh and rough and he may require a bit of extra maintenance to keep him looking smart and trim. Owners of this feisty hybrid say he is definitely worth the work and is a loving and fun companion.
While the history of the Foxy Russell is not well-documented, one can review the history of the parent breeds – the Toy Fox Terrier and the Jack Russell Terrier. The Jack Russell Terrier was developed as a hunter and he lived up to expectations well. With a love of the hunt, this courageous canine originated in England in the 1800s and was created through the efforts of Reverend John Russell (hence the name). Later used as a helpmate by mounted hunters who desired a swift dog who could keep up with the horses, he was also appreciated for his bark, leading the hunters in the field. The Toy Fox Terrier, another tenacious breed, was developed in America to be the dog we see today. With an interesting origin, the Toy Fox Terriers were once the runts of the Smooth Fox Terrier litters who were then further bred to refine the breed. The development included the Manchester Terrier, the spritely Chihuahau, the Min Pin, and the graceful Italian Greyhound, among other toy breeds. The Toy Fox Terrier still carries the characteristics of long ago; he is very alert and always ready for the chase.
The Foxy Russell may vary in appearance due to his lack of breed standard. The hybrid generally resembles the Jack Russell Terrier in looks. This eager canine has a longer muzzle and longer legs than the Jack Russell. With good stamina, his build is athletic and because of this, he is always ready to go for a run. His ears may be erect like the Toy Fox Terrier or flopped over somewhat like the Jack Russell. The coat of the Foxy Russell can come in either smooth or rough-coated form. His color combinations can vary from white, brown, tan, and black. His tail is generally high-set and short. His eyes are dark and beady and give him a look of cute curiosity.
Frequent bathing will not be necessary with the Foxy Russell but depending on the fur texture, he may need trimming and the occasional stripping of the coat (best done by a professional or experienced owner). To keep his fur looking his best, trimming and shaping will be needed on the legs and face. Other than that, however, grooming at home will be a simple brushing once a week with a pin brush. Combing can also remove dirt and debris that he may pick up while exploring outside. Trim his nails as needed to prevent cracks and breaks. Don't neglect the teeth - daily brushing with a veterinarian approved toothpaste is suggested.

The Foxy Russell is a happy-go-lucky and curious go-getter. His loyal personality means he will always protect his family and follow them. He is constantly on guard and on-the-move. This hybrid is known to be stubborn and can be a nuisance barker, although the barking can be tamed with early training. This independent canine is fierce and is not afraid to express his thoughts. He is perfect for the active family home and will want to accompany you on every outing. He is most suited for a home with older children who know how to play nicely and how to back off when he has had enough. The Foxy Russell may require additional training to be welcoming of small animals and other dogs. An animated hybrid, he may feel a sense of competition with other canines - obedience classes will help him to get used to other dogs and people in a neutral setting.
This high energy hybrid will need an hour a day of exercise to be at his best and happiest. Not a couch potato by any means, he thrives on the ability to explore and take in the world around him. A home with a fenced yard is ideal; he loves to dig though, and should not be left unattended outside as he is proficient at the task and may take off on a hike of his own given the opportunity. Take him on brisk walks and outings to the dog park where he can practise what he has learned in obedience class - he may make a friend or two for future play dates.
