The French Bull Dane is a dog made from two very different but equally wonderful breeds. The Great Dane and French Bulldog are great breeds on their own, and when mixed together they create a fun, affectionate and loyal pet that will show undying love to their families. This breed is fairly new and does not have much documented on it, but when considering the characteristics of the parents we can determine that these dogs should be healthy and easy to care for. Due to the drastic difference in height, weight and energy levels, it is hard to say for sure what kind appearance and activity needs this designer breed will require.

French Bull Dane Breed History

The creation of the French Bull Dane would not be possible without the existence of the Great Dane and the French Bulldog. The latter is a descendant of the toy English Bulldog, which hit a peak popularity in England during the 1850s and 1860s. Lacemakers in Nottingham of the English midlands were especially fond of the breed, and many brought their dogs with them from England to France. This is where the dogs were crossed with more breeds, and also where they were given their name. They became popular pets among people of all lifestyles, from rural landowners to wealthy city women. They were used as companions and watchdogs, and became extremely popular when the French Bulldog Club of America, which was founded in 1897, hosted a specialty show in 1898. The event took place in New York at the Waldorf Astoria ballroom. The breed had a decrease in numbers during World War I and even more during the Great Depression. However, the breed survived and was favorited again in the 1980s and 1990s. It is unknown for sure when the Great Dane first came into existence, but their ancestors are thought to have been around for thousands of years. Some drawings from Egyptian monuments of a dog breed that resembles the Great Dane date back to around 3000 B.C., and some written documents describing the breed were discovered in Chinese literature in 1121 B.C. The Irish Wolfhound and English Mastiff are thought to be the ancestors of these large dogs. This breed was used to hunt European wild boar in Germany, which was the perfect job for these brave and tenacious dogs. They were also a very popular choice for large estate guard dogs and companion pets among German nobility. In 1876, the breed was given the title of National Dog of Germany. They have different names around the world, being known as Alano in Italy, meaning “mastiff”, and are called Deutsche Dogge by German fanciers. The Deutsche Dogge Club of Germany was founded in 1891, and the breed was introduced to the United States by the mid-1800s. These dogs were officially recognized as a breed in the American Kennel Club in 1887, and the Great Dane Club of America, which was called the German Mastiff Club of America for the first two years, was created in 1889.

French Bull Dane Breed Appearance

The French Bull Dane might take on the small and sturdy bodies of the French Bulldog, as well as their Pug-like noses and bat-like ears. The French Bulldog also has a rounded forehead and a flat but proportional head. These dogs will have an underbite and big, round eyes. Their tails can be corkscrew or straight, depending on the dog. This breed has a square like appearance, as the length from withers to tail is about the same as the height of the withers. They can also be described as pear shaped, since the shoulders are a bit wider than the hind end. The Great Dane is a huge, elegant and muscular dog that is proportionately square with body height matching length. Their heads are square and medium sized ears that are high set and sometimes cropped. If they are left uncropped, the ears fold forward towards the cheek. Their tails, which are never cropped, will taper down to a point. Your French Bull Dane will have an interesting mix of the two; puppies in the same litter can vary considerably.

French Bull Dane Breed Maintenance

The French Bull Dane will develop a fairly simple to care for coat, as both parents are usually easy to maintain. The French Bulldog should be brushed every week just to keep the coat clean and shiny, but will not need regular baths or clipping. Great Danes are pretty heavy shedders that will need weekly brushing using a firm bristle brush. In some cases, people chose to get professional assistance for nail clipping and bathing, as the French Bull Dane can be big and difficult to handle if uncooperative. Keep their nails maintained by trimming them every one or two months. Brush their teeth every day, or at least two to three times per week. Clean and check your dog’s ears every week to keep them from getting infections.

French Bull Dane Temperament

Considering the parents of the French Bull Dane, we can determine that this hybrid dog will be a pretty great pet. The French Bulldog is a wonderful breed with a sweet and affectionate personality. These small dogs can be mischievous and stubborn to train but are easy to handle. They usually get along very well with any other pets or people that they meet. This breed will grow very attached to their families and can be sad or develop separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time. Great Danes are powerful, smart and fearless, which made them the perfect dog for hunting savage wild boar. These days they are loyal and affectionate companion pets. They also make great guard dogs, as their size makes them quite intimidating. Although they are protective, these dogs are gentle giants who would not cause harm unless they have to. Children should not be left unmonitored with Great Danes, simply because they can sometimes forget how big and powerful that they are. They are moderately smart and should be fairly simple to train.

French Bull Dane Activity Requirements

The French Bulldog has a low activity level and will be happy with a few small walks per day, along with some fetch and play time. As adolescents, the Great Dane can be quite energetic and will need to be walked regularly. For the first few years your French Bull Dane should not be jumped or run excessively in order to prevent joint disorders. The amount of activity required from the breed will depend on the individual dog. However, it will most likely range somewhere between 30 to 120 minutes of exercise per day, since those are the needs of the parent breeds. The individual personality and temperament will determine the exercise requirements.
