French Bull Rat Terrier Breed History

The French Bulldog is believed to be a descendent of the ancient Molossians, from whom came the Mastiffs and then the Bulldogs. Ancestors of the French Bulldog were first bred for bull-baiting and then for dog fighting. Once these cruel sports became illegal in England and throughout Europe, the English Bulldog had no work to do. Later crossed with small Terriers to reduce their size, the French Bulldog line was developed. These dogs were considered too small for English tastes and were brought to France where they became favored society companions. The breed headed to the United States and by 1898, the French Bulldog was added to the roster of the American Kennel Club, being placed in the Non Sporting Group. The American Rat Terrier mix was created from a combination of crosses by earlier immigrants to the United States. These included the Fox Terrier as well as other popular Terriers from Europe in the 1800’s: the Old English White Terrier, the Manchester Terrier and the Bull Terrier. Later, these dogs were crossed with the Beagle, Smooth Fox Terrier, Toy Fox Terrier, Whippet and Italian Greyhound. The 178th breed added to the American Kennel Club’s purebred list, the American Rat Terrier was recently added in 2013.

French Bull Rat Terrier Breed Appearance

A very attractive mix with the bat ears typical of the the French Bulldog, the French Bull Rat Terrier packs a punch with his muscular body and strong gait. Often seen with a patch around his eye or a mask on his face, this canine will turn heads for his cuteness if nothing else. His coat is smooth and bright, often a mix of white and another color. Parental influences will determine the exact shape of the head but it can be squarish like the French Bulldog or more narrow like the Rat Terrier. Eyes are oval and set widely apart. Color can vary including brown and hazel. He may or may not have some of the Bulldog wrinkles.

French Bull Rat Terrier Breed Maintenance

Not considered a heavy shedder, your French Bull Rat Terrier will have a season of shedding though and will need daily brushing at that point to keep your home and clothing free of hair. A slicker brush will work just great as it works to draw the fur out evenly and thoroughly. Bathing should not be a regular necessity’ the Bulldog can sometimes have sensitive skin so your French Bull Rat Terrier may inherit the trait. Brush the teeth at least three times per week. Keep an eye on the nails and do not let them get too long as tears and breaks can be very painful. Dress your hybrid warmly in cold temperatures as he does mind the extremes. This goes for heat as well; do not allow him to over exert himself on hot days - exercise him in the shade.

French Bull Rat Terrier Temperament

The French Bull Rat Terrier will inherit his temperament from his parents. Good at announcing the presence of danger, depending on his size he may still try to be a lap dog. He will display a big personality and early training is helpful so that your French Bull Rat Terrier will be pleasant to live with. Seeking to please their owners they can be stubborn at times, but are considered very trainable, particularly when properly motivated (in many cases with food).  Curious and friendly, he will be open for any adventure you can come up with. He may be slightly aggressive with strangers and other dogs; early and consistent training will help with that.

French Bull Rat Terrier Activity Requirements

The activity requirements for the French Bull Rat Terrier can be determined from those of his parents. The French Bulldog is not particularly active or energetic. A few short walks each day will be good for his health, but he may try to convince you that he will be fine lounging around the house. Their size and lack of need for activity make apartments suitable homes. The American Rat Terrier Mix, on the other hand, was bred to work on the farm all day and has a lot of energy. This half of the mix requires a lot of exercise, both mental and physical. If your hybrid is not kept busy, he can get himself into trouble in order to occupy himself. He will enjoy walks and hikes, playing outdoors with his family, and visiting the dog park.
