The Golden Boxer is a hybrid mix of the Boxer and the Golden Retriever. Both parents are excellent companions and great with children. The Golden Retriever is far more mellow than the Boxer, and the intensity of activity levels will vary from dog to dog. Both parent breeds are top-ranked in popularity with the Golden Retriever maintaining many years in the top-ranked position. Despite the popularity of the parents, this hybrid is a modern dog with less than 15 years of intentional breeding.

Golden Boxer Breed History

The Golden Boxer is hybrid of two large hunting turned companion dogs, the Boxer and the Golden Retriever. The hybrid is a modern dog with little documentation over the last decade or so of intentional breeding. Being a modern hybrid, bred as a designer dog, those interested in understanding the potential characteristics and traits of the Golden Boxer will have to look at the parent breeds for insight. Golden Retrievers are well known for their excellent companionship and sweet natures. The Boxer breed is high energy and puppy-like for many years, but an excellent companion as well. The Golden Retriever developed in Scotland in the later part of the 19th Century as a hunting and retrieving dog for waterfowl. The goal of the breeding program was to create a breed that was unmatched in the field but gentle, calm, and loyal indoors. This was achieved by crossbreeding a Wavy-Coated Retriever with a now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. Only Golden-colored dogs were chosen from subsequent litters for the breeding program, and by the late early 20th, the Golden Retriever was recognized as a breed in England. The American Kennel Club recognized the Golden Retriever in 1925, and the breed has enjoyed many years as a top choice for families. The Boxer is of the Tibetan line of Mastiffs and was developed primarily in Germany during the 16th century. The Boxer Breed Club was established in Munich in the 1800s and is thought to gain its name by the way it uses its paws in a fight, which resembles a boxer. The American Kennel Club first recognized the Boxer in 1904, and today this breed ranks among the top ten in popularity. The hybrid Golden Boxer is a popular choice for mixed breeds and is currently recognized by the Designer Dogs Kennel Club and the Dog Registry of America.

Golden Boxer Breed Appearance

The Golden Boxer is a hybrid between the Boxer and the Golden Retriever and can look like either parent breed depending on the dominant appearance. This is a large dog, weighing between 60 and 75 pounds with a sturdy, muscular build. If the Golden Boxer leans more towards the Boxer parent, it will have a square shaped head and shorter muzzle. If the Golden Boxer leans more towards the Golden Retriever, its head will be round on top and will have a longer muzzle. The ears of a Golden Boxer lay down, like that of the Golden Retriever but have that same perky and inquisitive look. The eyes are light to dark brown and oval-shaped. The feet are medium-sized, round, and compact and the body is muscular.

Golden Boxer Breed Maintenance

The Golder Boxer is not a hypoallergenic dog and sheds considerably no matter which parent the hybrid resembles. Bi-weekly grooming by brushing with a slicker brush will help remove dead and loose hair and keep your Golden Boxer’s coat healthy. This mix is not known to smell, but weekly grooming will help distribute oils and remove dirt and dead skin that might lead to a hound smell. Frequent nail clipping is also suggested for your Golden Boxer. The Golden Boxer does not usually drool, but an increase in drooling may indicate your Golden Boxer is suffering from a dental or gum issue. Regular teeth brushing and cleaning will give you an opportunity to check his gums and prevent disease.

Golden Boxer Temperament

The Golden Boxer is a high energy hybrid that loves its family. Unlike the friendly Golden Retriever, the Boxer parent makes this mix slight leery of strangers. The Golden Boxer may make for a good watchdog, and you can expect him to bark at unfamiliar approaching strangers. Otherwise, the Golden Boxer is quiet. The Golden Boxer is patient and with proper socialization will do well with children. However, this is a larger, energetic breed and may not be well suited for living with very young children. Always teach your kids how to approach a dog and interact with him. Rough play, tail pulling, and teasing must be avoided. The Golden Boxer adapts well to sharing space with other dogs and cats, though the cat’s small size and willingness to run away from the Golden Boxer can excite the prey mind, and your Golden Boxer may chase the cat. Early socialization with other dogs will help a Golden Boxer to live in harmony with other dogs. The Golden Retriever parent is always eager to please as is the Boxer, making this hybrid a breeze for training and novice dog owners.

Golden Boxer Activity Requirements

The Golden Boxer is a hybrid of two breeds with high energy but varying intensity needs. Your Golden Boxer will need plenty of exercise but not need high-intensity exercise if he resembles the Golden Retriever. If your Golden Boxer resembles the Boxer, he will love to jump and requires far more intense exercise. Being a large dog, the Golden Boxer needs to run and run hard daily to expel his extra energy. His high energy means he is not well suited for apartment and urban living. A backyard and space to run around is more suitable for this hybrid. With discipline, the Golden Boxer makes for an excellent jogging partner. The Golden Boxer prefers temperate climates, and while he tolerates hot and cold environments, extremes are not well tolerated.

Our Golden Boxer is a super-handsome, super-smart dog. Pretty excitable and needs activity to burn off energy. After you wear him down with play, he's a cuddle-bug and loves sleeping in bed with us. Extremely easy to train. At 4 months, he sits at crosswalks, stay/come/leave it, sit/shake, etc. He loves to learn! He's a great dog for a semi-active household with a yard to run. He tends to chase one of our cats, but at the same time, he was very cautious and gentle with our friends toddler (he seemed to know he wasn't supposed to mess with the baby.).

I got my golden boxer when he was 3. Full of energy when out and LAZY when inside At 9 he aged overnight, laziness has taken over .He has always loved people, children, everyonce. And is very very gentle. Would cuddle (anyone) all day. Doesn't take anytime to adjust to new people. Only issue has been skin allergies but I think it's more unique to him rather than the breed. Another thing is how quiet he is. Doesn't bark at all, ever. A real good boy.
