The Golden Labrador is a large friendly dog, full of energy, and always wanting to be part of the action. Highly intelligent, they are easier than most dogs to train as they are so willing to please. They enjoy being inside with the family and will be devoted to you. While alert enough to be a good watchdog, the instinct to befriend everyone rules them out for this express purpose. These dogs need a good daily walk and plenty of mental stimulation. They love to play and will be the last person standing in the game. They adore the water and are great swimmers. They may roll in the mud afterward to dry off so be warned. If you can direct your pup to the grass after a dip in the lake it will be so much better; otherwise, your active companion will need a bath!

Golden Labrador Breed History

The Golden Labrador has two of the most popular breeds as their parents. The Labrador Retriever was originally used as a retriever of fish for Canadian fisherman in the 1700s. They also filled a key role as a companion and loyal friend. During a visit to Canada in the 1800s, some Englishmen were so impressed with this dog that they brought them back to England where they were used as retrievers for the nobility during hunting outings. In the late 19th century the Labrador Retriever had disappeared from Canada due to their breeding laws, but the breed survived and flourished in England. The English Kennel Club recognized the dog in 1903 and the American Kennel Club followed suit in 1917. Blessed with a sweet nature, they are friendly and outgoing. The Labrador Retriever is an exuberant companion or working dog who needs plenty of exercise. The Golden Retriever was also bred to be used as a hunting dog. With their keen sense of smell, willingness to please and boundless energy, they made ideal dogs to retrieve waterfowl or other small game. They originated in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800s. Lord Tweedmouth was responsible for the creation of this breed using several types of dogs to achieve his aim, which in later years included the Bloodhound, Irish Setter, and Tweed Water Spaniel. The Golden Retriever has grown to be one of the most popular breeds known today. They are used in a wide range of activities which include hunting and tracking, detection work, service work for the disabled, and as a guide dog for the blind. The Golden Labrador, also called the Goldador, is a combination of traits from these two wonderful canines.

Golden Labrador Breed Appearance

The Golden Labrador is a large dog with a square shaped head that is slightly rounded at the top. The ears are long and floppy and this attractive furry companion has a wide tapered muzzle with the teeth meeting in a scissors bite. They say that the eyes are the mirror to the soul, and this is definitely true with the Goldador. Their eyes are a gorgeous deep golden brown and express the devotion and loyalty that this dog possesses. The nose is usually black in color, with wide nostrils ideal for picking up a scent. Strong legs and a wide chest match the perfectly proportioned body and make the Golden Labrador one of the most popular hybrid breeds in the world.

Golden Labrador Breed Maintenance

At times, it seems as if the Golden Labrador is always shedding; a thorough brushing with a pin brush to remove tangles once a day will also help keep those loose hairs from decorating the house. Lovers of attention, they tend to enjoy this process and will look forward to the special treatment. While you are brushing, check your pup's ears for dirt and debris that can cause infection, and wipe them out with a soft cloth to keep them healthy. Brush your pal's teeth at least three times a week and trim the toenails when needed – just don’t trim too short or you may cut the quick and cause bleeding.

Insuring your Golden Labrador puppy as soon as “pawssible” is essential for preventing high vet care costs. Start comparing insurance plans from leading insurers like Healthy Paws and Embrace and save over $270 a year.

Golden Labrador Temperament

Good natured, loving, affectionate, goofy, and happy, the Golden Labrador loves people and is very friendly. Training them is a breeze as this is a dog designed to please. They also like to carry out tasks, making them a good work dog. This is not a dog to leave on their own outside in the yard; they will want to be with the family. If left alone for long stretches, your dog can get destructive out of boredom. The Goldador will respond well to praise and rewards, but avoid harsh methods as they can be sensitive to tone. They like to be guided, and respond well to an owner with a consistent leadership role. Full of energy, they adore a game or two – guess who will be the one to tire first? A beach or river walk is ideal and chances are that our water dog will launch themselves into the water without a thought. A great swimmer, they are happy to join you in the pool although they may try to ‘rescue’ the children until they realize the noise is happy noise, not an emergency. Loving, easy to care for, and a friend for life, the Golden Labrador is a gem of a dog.

Golden Labrador Activity Requirements

The Golden Labrador is very active, especially when they are young and require a walk once or twice a day to burn off that energy. If they don’t have enough exercise, they can develop destructive habits such as barking, digging, and chewing everything in sight. They are easy to exercise as they will happily lope alongside you as you run or bike, and even just a trip to the dog park will be met with high excitement. As the Golden Labrador matures they don’t need as much exercise, tending to become a bit of a couch potato, but will still require a short regular walk to keep fit and content.

My 20 yearold daughter adopted a Golden lab thru Homes for Heros. I took Bleu (2yr) to the mountains with me for the summer. I had to have my own and adopted Mac (11m). Great healthy dogs from TA&M (Aggieland)

My golden lab is the best thing to ever happen to me. He has been my best friend for 10 years. He just keeps getting sweeter with age. He loves to cuddle and he gets so much joy out of being with our family. He also has a little sister who is a 6 year old golden retriever. He basically trained her as a puppy and watches over her. He refuses to come inside without her because he thinks he always needs to be watching her. He is extremely photogenic and just wants to make everyone happy. He gives the best head hugs and cuddles like it’s nobody’s business
